Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Preparations Before Hatching
The gleam of a metallic Iron Tail swung through the air, barely buying enough time for a breather.
After evading Nidoking's counterattack, Machoke didn't immediately press forward. Instead, it took a moment to catch its breath.
Under the strain of relentless offense, all of Machoke's muscles ached faintly, though the Pokémon forcibly suppressed the pain.
"Machoke, use Soru to retreat and adopt a Bulk Up!"
At Ron's command, Machoke, still slightly winded, immediately sprang into motion.
The high-intensity battle was pushing Nidoking to its limit as well. Its gaze, fixed on Machoke, was heavy with a newfound seriousness.
Though Machoke hadn't yet reached elite-level strength, it had forced Nidoking into such a predicament. For a fleeting moment, Nidoking wondered if leaving its offspring in Ron's care might indeed lead to better growth.
Shaking its head to clear the thought, Nidoking inhaled deeply. The battle wasn't over yet; its focus had to remain on the fight.
With a thunderous roar, Nidoking launched a final charge.
Executing Double-Edge, it fully committed to the attack. Regardless of whether the strike landed, Nidoking knew the move's recoil might render it unable to continue fighting.
"This is it, Machoke! Close Combat!"
Ron chose not to let Machoke evade with Soru to secure an easy win. Instead, he respected Nidoking's final offensive.
The effects of multiple Bulk Ups combined with the Power Save Belt's release had brought Machoke's power to a staggering peak.
At the moment Ron gave his command, Machoke vanished from its spot with Soru.
In the next instant, a violent shockwave erupted outward, surging in all directions.
At the eye of the storm, Machoke and Nidoking clashed with all their might, each trying to overpower the other.
But the injuries Nidoking had sustained earlier began to take their toll, causing it to exhaust its strength first.
Seizing the moment, Machoke lifted Nidoking's massive body and hurled it away with all its remaining power.
Though Nidoking landed heavily, it hadn't completely lost its ability to fight. It struggled to rise, refusing to concede, until finally collapsing in defeat.
Only after confirming Nidoking's loss did Machoke breathe a sigh of relief and fall backward.
Defeating an elite-level Pokémon in a battle of this intensity, especially one as formidable as Nidoking, had drained Machoke of every ounce of energy.
Fortunately, Machoke didn't hit the ground. Gloom caught it, and Ron's Fighting Aura began to heal Machoke's body.
Meanwhile, Meowth helped Machoke reapply its Power Save Belt, sealing away the excess power once more.
As warmth coursed through Machoke, the injuries it had sustained quickly healed, and its stamina was restored at an astonishing rate.
In just a minute or two, Machoke was back on its feet, full of vitality once again.
"You did great, Machoke. I'm proud of you."
Ron grinned, patting Machoke's firm chest.
Who would have thought that in just two months, Ron could go from a newcomer to someone capable of defeating an elite-level Pokémon?
After the battle, Machoke's level rose again, reaching Level 29.
Once the joy of victory subsided, Ron turned to Nidoking and began using his Fighting Aura to heal its wounds.
The earlier wager had been meant to ignite Nidoking's fighting spirit. If Nidoking were unwilling to part with its offspring, Ron wouldn't force it to surrender the egg.
As the warm energy of the Fighting Aura worked its magic, Nidoking's eyes fluttered open.
Still lying on the ground, Nidoking felt the soothing heat within its body. Though it didn't understand the specifics, it was clear the phenomenon was tied to Ron.
Gazing at Ron, Nidoking found itself unable to comprehend why this human—who had just directed his Pokémon to pummel it and boldly claimed he'd take its child—would dare to approach so closely, let alone heal it.
Ordinarily, Nidoking would have swiped at him with a claw.
Yet, for some reason, Nidoking held back today. Perhaps it was simply exhausted.
"Nidoking, I won the battle," Ron said plainly, "but I still want to hear your thoughts. Will you entrust your child to me?"
He didn't extol Machoke's strength or make lofty promises about what he could achieve. Instead, he spoke with simple, direct words.
Nidoking felt its temper spike momentarily.
I was just about to talk things out with you peacefully, and this is how you open? You're really testing my patience!
But the blow it considered delivering never landed. Nidoking understood that while it might still grow stronger, its potential was limited. Its hopes rested on its only child.
In the wild, lack of strength meant enduring humiliation, scarcity of food, and constant danger.
Originally, Nidoking had believed its power was sufficient to safeguard its child's growth.
But today's battle with Ron had shown otherwise. If Ron could defeat it now, others might one day do the same.
Moreover, there was something about Ron—a unique energy that stirred trust and respect. It was this very energy that led Nidoking to consider the unthinkable.
With a faint, reluctant nod, Nidoking gave its answer.
Ron didn't dwell on the moment. Instead, he began discussing methods to care for the yet-to-hatch Nidoran egg with Nidoking.
Though he couldn't understand Pokémon speech directly, Nidoking's gestures and explanations, along with Machoke and the others' help, allowed them to communicate.
In the end, they reached a simple arrangement: the egg would stay with Ron while Nidoking returned to its territory to guard against intrusions.
Nidoking would periodically visit to check on its child.
Based on its experience, Nidoking estimated that the egg was close to hatching, making it essential to prepare sufficient food. While newly hatched Nidoran didn't require milk, they did need easily digestible and nutritious meals.
When Nidoking mentioned this, Ron immediately thought of Beedrill honey.
In the past, obtaining Beedrill honey might have been challenging.
But with Machoke's current strength, all they needed was to locate a Beedrill hive. If necessary, Nidoking could even lend a hand.
With two elite-level Pokémon, no swarm of Beedrill would pose a serious threat.
After finalizing the details, Nidoking reluctantly headed back to its territory, while Ron began cleaning up the battlefield and erasing signs of the skirmish.
Only much later did Ron have the time to carefully examine the Pokémon egg cradled in his arms.
Unfortunately, Ron knew little about Pokémon eggs and couldn't gauge its quality.
Resigned, he decided to wrap the egg in his Fighting Aura daily.
Though the effort was minimal, it might yield unexpected results.
Unbeknownst to Ron, as the egg was enveloped in his aura, faint flickers of purple light occasionally danced across its shell.
