Otherworldly Interference

Chapter 2: A little backstory

Arthur woke up alone in his bed. He stared at the ceiling of his room. How he wished that he wouldn't have to wake up. He got up from the bed and went to the bathroom to take a shower. After getting fresh he managed to get himself something to eat even though he was not hungry. He looked at himself in the mirror, a tall frail person who looked tired, tired of life and everything around him. His mind started flashing towards the his childhood days; goofing around with his best friend, MMA tournaments; spending time with his family... But he shook his head to clear the thoughts. It was too much for him to think about it. He shouldn't. He couldn't. He couldn't visit those memories again.

He got up and got dressed and left his house to make it to his office. He entered his garage and looked at the cars. Smiling slightly to himself at his collection. It was his childhood dream to get a car collection of his own. He again shook his head to clear his thoughts. He decided to take the Nissan GT R35, his favorite out of all his 19 cars. He drove on towards his office.

Reaching a tall building after about an hour of drive, he looked up. The building was named GM, named after his parents. He made it inside after parking his car.

"Good Morning Boss", a lady said while she hurried towards Arthur.

"Mia", Arthur said with a nod. "What's on the agenda today?".

Mia handed him a tab in which the entire day's plan were written. Arthur took a look at them before handing it back.

"So we are starting of with a staff meeting? That's something new", Arthur said.

"Yes boss, as we made about 47% increase in our sales last week I think it's best we start with a staff meeting to congratulate everyone while encouraging them for their work. I am sure they would love to see you", Mia stated.

"I see", Arthur nodded as they got into an elevator and Arthur pressed the 13th floor button.

"And Mia, for the hundredth time, call me Arthur"

"I will try boss....I mean Arthur"

Arthur sighed.

The morning meeting went by with a small celebration and a speech by Arthur. It was yet another usual business day for Arthur and by the time it was sun went down, he was completely exhausted. When it was time to leave, he looked at Mia, who was his secretary, she looked like she would pass out from exhaustion.

"Mia, I would like to talk to you about something in my office", Arthur stated.

Mia came into Arthur's office.

"You take the next week off. By what I am seeing you will die at this rate if I was to make you work again tomorrow"

"I can't do that boss...I mean Arthur"

"Get it done Mia its an order. Just get Sophia to cover the next week.", Arthur sighed as he got up to leave.

"Thank you Arthur", Mia said with a smile.

Arthur made it to the garage and got into his car. Driving out of the building, he went to the grocery store on his way to get ingredients for his dinner and breakfast and then drove back home. After reaching his room, Arthur set the ingredients in the kitchen counter top and went to get a shower.

After dinner as he lay on his bed, memories started to flood in again. He was a happy child back then, always learning something and playing around. He remembered playing with his friends, the first time he won an under 17 MMA tournament, the joy of his parents at his winning everything. He couldn't help but smile. He remembered the first time he got a girlfriend, the dates he went on, the pranks he used to pull on her. He missed them.

As Arthur sat alone in his dimly lit room, the weight of painful memories began to engulf him, each recollection a piercing stab at his heart. He was transported back to the day he lost his girlfriend in a devastating accident, the blow of her absence still fresh in his mind. Then, the haunting memory of his best friend's untimely suicide loomed over him, the best friend who he loved like anything.

The anguish only deepened as Arthur reminisced about the day he received the news of his father's cancer diagnosis, followed swiftly by his death. Soon after, the cruel hand of fate claimed his mother, leaving Arthur to navigate the world alone. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he fought with the profound sense of loss and regret.

Arthur never came from a rich household and growing up he was never rich but his parents always provided him with anything he asked for without a second question. His goal was to get rich and provide his parents a luxurious life. Yet, fate had robbed him of that opportunity, leaving him feeling utterly powerless and adrift in a sea of grief.

As despair threatened to consume him, Arthur's thoughts turned dark, his longing for release from the pain growing ever stronger. Despite his outward facade of wealth and success, he found himself feeling hollow and alone, the emptiness of his existence echoing in the silence of his solitude.

"I'm nothing but a muggle version of Harry Potter, doomed to a life without a happy ending," Arthur muttered bitterly, the comparison to the beloved childhood tale serving as a stark reminder of his own unfulfilled desires.

With a heavy heart, Arthur fell to the exhaustion of his sorrow, his troubled mind seeking solace in sleep. As he drifted into unconsciousness, a single thought echoed in his mind: "I wish this would end already."
