Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The First Hunt
The wolf and I stared at each other for a long moment.
I still wasn't sure if it was friend or foe.
But it had saved me—twice.
For now, I decided to trust it.
"Alright," I muttered, standing up. "I don't know why you're helping me, but if you're going to follow me, don't cause trouble."
The wolf just blinked.
I took that as a yes.
The next challenge: food.
I had water from the stream, but without food, I wouldn't last long.
The poisonous berries earlier were a wake-up call—I couldn't just eat random things.
I needed meat.
But how?
I had no hunting skills, no weapons except my crude branch-club, and no idea how strong the animals in this jungle were.
I glanced at the wolf.
Could it hunt?
"Hey," I called out. The wolf's ears twitched, but it didn't move.
I crouched down and made a motion like I was biting food. "Hunt. You understand?"
It tilted its head, then sniffed the air.
Suddenly, it stood up and started walking.
I blinked. Wait, did it actually understand me?
I had no better option, so I followed.
We moved carefully through the jungle, the wolf leading the way.
After about ten minutes, it stopped.
I peeked through the bushes—
A rabbit-like creature with long ears and sharp claws was nibbling on a root.
I tensed. This was my chance.
The wolf's body lowered into a crouch.
Then—
It dashed forward, faster than I expected!
The rabbit-thing screeched and tried to run—but the wolf was quicker.
With one leap, it tackled the creature and bit down hard on its neck.
The rabbit-thing twitched… then went still.
I exhaled, stepping closer.
My first meal in this world.
The wolf let go and looked at me.
I hesitated. "Uh… am I supposed to eat this raw?"
The wolf just sat down, as if saying, That's your problem.
I sighed. Fire. I need fire.
I looked around for dry wood and stones, trying to remember survival tricks from my old world.
The wolf watched in silence as I started working.
It took time, but eventually—
A small flame flickered to life.
I grinned. Success.
Now, I just had to cook the meat—and for the first time since waking up in this world, I wouldn't go to sleep hungry.
