Chapter 26: Learning To Fight As One
Vivi sat in lotus position while focusing on her mana core. The blue glow around her hands pulsed steadily, showing the progress she'd made overnight. Lucius watched her progress while holding the instruction manuals he'd finished writing last night. His eyes were tired from staying up, but seeing his student's dedication made it worthwhile.
"You're maintaining the flow naturally now," Lucius noticed how her mana moved smoothly through her body. "Let's try Expelliarmus first."
Several training weapons materialized as Vivi opened her eyes. She kept her breathing steady, just like he'd taught her.
"The key to Expelliarmus isn't force - it's precision," Lucius explained. "Your mana needs to target the connection between weapon and wielder."
Vivi focused on a practice sword floating nearby. Her first attempt barely made it wobble.
"Don't push with your mana," Lucius corrected. "Think of it like unhooking something. Find where the weapon wants to let go."
She tried again, this time letting her mana flow around the sword like water. The weapon suddenly shot toward her, but she wasn't ready and had to dodge.
"Good! The disarming worked, now let's work on catching them safely."
Ten practice dummies appeared, each holding different weapons. Vivi attempted to disarm them one by one, gradually learning to control where the weapons landed.
"Feel the weight of each weapon," Lucius instructed. "Heavier ones need more control during the disarming."
After an hour of practice, Vivi could reliably catch any weapon she disarmed. Her control improved enough that she could even guide them to specific locations.

"Now let's make it harder," Lucius said as twenty dummies materialized. "Try disarming multiple targets at once."
Vivi extended both hands, channeling her mana in a wide arc. Three weapons broke free from their wielders, but flew in random directions.
"Remember - control is more important than quantity. Start with two at a time, then build up."
She adjusted her technique, focusing on pairs of targets. Each attempt got smoother as she learned to split her attention without losing precision.
"Watch their grips," Lucius pointed out. "Some hold tighter than others. Those need an extra push."
By mid-morning, Vivi could disarm five dummies simultaneously and catch their weapons safely. Her movements became more efficient with each success.
"Time for Protego," Lucius said after a short break. "This spell is about layering protection."
He demonstrated the basic shield - a translucent barrier of blue mana. "Start small. Focus on making it solid before making it bigger."
Vivi's first attempt produced a shield the size of a dinner plate. When a rubber ball hit it, the barrier held firm.
"Good foundation. Now expand it while keeping that same strength."
She practiced making larger shields, learning how much mana each size required. The barriers grew steadily as she found the right balance.
"Curve it slightly," Lucius advised as arrows flew toward her shield. "Let attacks glance off instead of hitting directly."
Vivi adjusted the shield's shape, watching as arrows slid harmlessly away. Each successful deflection taught her more about managing the barrier's form.
"Now try moving while maintaining the shield."
This proved trickier. Her first attempts flickered out when she took a step. But after several tries, she learned to keep the barrier stable while walking.
"Excellent. Let's add some pressure."
Multiple dummies attacked from different angles. Vivi had to constantly adjust her shield's position and strength to block each hit.
"Remember - you can layer them for extra protection."
She created overlapping barriers, using the curves to redirect attacks in specific directions. The technique used more mana but provided better coverage.

"Time to combine both spells," Lucius said as new dummies appeared. "Use Protego to defend while setting up Expelliarmus."
Vivi shielded against the first wave of attacks, then quickly disarmed three dummies through gaps in her barrier. Each success built her confidence with the combination.
"Your shield doesn't have to block everything," Lucius noted. "Sometimes letting an attack through creates an opening for Expelliarmus."
She practiced this new strategy, deliberately leaving small gaps that tempted enemies to attack. When they committed to the strike, she'd disarm them mid-swing.
"Perfect. Now let's work on timing."
The dummies attacked in coordinated groups. Vivi learned to drop her shield at precise moments, disarm multiple targets, then reestablish protection before counterattacks landed.
By the time others woke up, she could handle a dozen opponents using both spells smoothly. Her natural grace made the magical movements look like a practiced dance.
"You've mastered the basics remarkably fast," Lucius said as she finished another successful combination. "The manuals will help you refine these techniques further."
Vivi nodded, already thinking about how to incorporate the spells into real combat. Her quick progress showed just how determined she was to learn everything possible before they had to leave.
As afternoon approached, Lucius gathered everyone in the main training area. They'd worked hard on individual skills, but something crucial was missing.
"For our final lesson," Lucius announced, accessing the system interface. "I want to teach you something different."

"You've all gotten stronger individually," Lucius said as the knowledge integrated. "But true strength comes from working together."
"I'm plenty strong alone," Luffy grinned while activating Iron Body.
"That's exactly the problem," Lucius shook his head. "Look at your past battles. How many times have you won, but at what cost?"
"I don't mind getting hurt," Luffy shrugged. "As long as my crew is safe."
"But we're not," Nami stepped forward. "Every time you rush in alone, we have to divide our attention between fighting and worrying about you."
"QUACK!" Karoo nodded in agreement, remembering how often they had to adjust their plans because of Luffy's impulsive attacks.
"She's right," Sanji added. "Remember Arlong Park? You almost drowned because you didn't wait for us."
Zoro crossed his arms. "A captain leads from the front."
"Leading doesn't mean fighting alone," Lucius pointed out. "It means directing your crew's strength effectively."
He waved his hand, creating a replay of their earlier training sessions. The images showed multiple instances where they'd accidentally interfered with each other's techniques.
"Look here - Usopp's shots keep getting blocked because everyone moves without warning. And there - Karoo's Tempest Kicks could have taken out multiple targets if you'd given him proper openings."
The crew watched their mistakes play out. Even Luffy looked thoughtful as he saw how often their attacks cancelled each other out.
"Want to see what happens in a real fight?" Lucius asked. "Eighty enemies, coming at you together. Show me how you'd handle it."
The dummies materialized in formation, each one glowing with enhanced power. They moved with coordinated precision, unlike the random training dummies from before.
"Begin!"
Luffy immediately shot forward with a "Gum Gum Pistol," but three dummies blocked while two more flanked him. Without Iron Body activated, he took hits from both sides.
Zoro tried cutting through to help, but Sanji's kick nearly hit him instead of the dummy he was aiming for. "Watch it, cook!"
"You're in my way, moss-head!"
Their argument created an opening that five dummies exploited, forcing them apart with synchronized attacks.
Karoo launched Tempest Kicks rapidly, but had to stop when Luffy stretched into his line of fire. Several perfect opportunities for the duck's attacks were wasted because no one coordinated with his timing.
Nami's Paper Art helped her dodge, but she had nowhere safe to counterattack with her crewmates scattered randomly across the battlefield. Each time she found an opening, someone else's wild attack would force her to retreat.
Usopp positioned himself for clear shots, but kept having to relocate as his allies' chaotic movements drew enemies toward his position. His carefully aimed Finger Pistols missed their marks as targets ducked under his crewmates' attacks.
Vivi attempted to use her new spells, creating shields to protect her friends while disarming enemies. But without coordination, she couldn't predict where anyone would be. Her Protego barriers often blocked allied attacks instead of enemy ones.
Within minutes, it was clear they were losing. Despite their individual strength, the dummies' superior teamwork let them control the entire fight.
Lucius waved his hand, making the dummies vanish. "That's what happens when you fight next to each other instead of with each other."
"But we're strong," Luffy protested, though with less certainty.
"Of course you are," Lucius agreed. "But you're facing organized enemies. Remember Whiskey Peak? You had the advantage of darkness, taking them by surprise one at a time."
"We handled Whiskey Peak," Zoro said.
"That was different," Lucius pointed out. "You fought them separately in the dark. And on the ship, it was just two agents. What happens when they come at you together, coordinated?"
He created a smaller demonstration, showing how their techniques could work together instead of clashing.
"Look - Luffy's rubber powers could launch Sanji for aerial attacks. Zoro's cutting techniques could create openings for Usopp's precision shots. Karoo's Tempest Kicks could herd enemies right into Nami's trap zones, while Vivi's spells protect everyone's flanks."
The crew watched as phantom versions of themselves demonstrated perfect coordination. Each move flowed naturally into the next, turning their individual strengths into devastating combinations.
"Even your personalities could work better together," Lucius continued. "Luffy's instincts for picking fights, Nami's tactical mind, Zoro's discipline, Sanji's precision, Usopp's creativity, Vivi's leadership experience, Karoo's natural timing - it's all valuable if you learn to blend it properly."
"But how?" Nami asked. "We can't plan every move in advance."
"You don't need to. You need awareness - knowing where your crew is, what they're likely to do next. Supporting each other's strengths while covering weaknesses."
Lucius materialized training dummies in basic formations. "Watch your opponents too. See how they move together? No wasted actions, no friendly fire, no accidental blocking. They trust each other completely."
"We trust each other!" Luffy said firmly.
"With your lives, yes. But do you trust each other's judgment? Each other's fighting styles? Or do you just assume everything will work out if you hit hard enough?"
That made them pause. Even Luffy couldn't argue - he'd always relied on raw determination over strategy.
"Real trust isn't just believing your friends will survive," Lucius said quietly. "It's knowing when to step back and let them handle things. When to support instead of charging in. When to ask for help instead of forcing your way through."
The crew exchanged looks, finally understanding. They'd been so focused on individual growth that they'd neglected their greatest strength - each other.
"So teach us," Sanji said, lighting a cigarette. "How do we fight as one?"
