Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Combination of Fruit and Haki
At the crack of dawn, Jon and his peers were roused from their beds. After getting dressed and ready, they began training under Zephyr's orders.
For several days, Zephyr had them engaged in various grueling exercises, pushing them to their limits every day. It wasn't until they were completely exhausted that they were allowed to return to their dormitories.
During this period, Zephyr didn't teach them anything advanced—only the simplest, repetitive drills. Each session ended with most recruits too drained to stand. It was undeniably a form of "devil training."
Under this intense regimen, the performance gap between recruits became increasingly apparent, with Akainu and Kizaru standing out the most.
No matter how intense the training got, these two showed no signs of fatigue, consistently maintaining peak performance. In contrast, everyone else—aside from the enigmatic Monkey D. Dragon—was utterly exhausted. Jon, in particular, was left sprawled out and barely functional every evening.
Originally, Jon had planned to experiment with his Devil Fruit abilities. However, the training schedule left no room for anything else. His days consisted solely of training, eating, and sleeping, leaving him with no energy to develop his powers further.
While Jon could endure the physical exhaustion, what truly tested his patience was Kizaru's incessant presence.
This guy clung to their dorm like glue, constantly initiating conversations. While the three of them seemed to enjoy themselves effortlessly, Jon found it taxing to keep up, often forcing himself to engage despite his fatigue.
Nonetheless, Jon gained valuable insights from his chats with Dragon and the others.
Akainu and Kizaru were undoubtedly monsters, but their training techniques held merit. Jon could only incorporate a fraction of these methods due to his comparatively weaker physique.
Dragon, on the other hand, was far more helpful. He shared tips on conserving energy during training, recovering from fatigue, and even techniques for maximizing strength—all without holding back.
Jon had to admit that Dragon far outclassed him in these areas, broadening his understanding of training methodologies. Compared to Dragon's advice, Jon realized how rudimentary his previous workouts had been, exposing the gap in experience and knowledge.
After several grueling days, the moment of reallocation finally arrived. Zephyr, as expected, didn't mince words and directly announced the list of recruits he would personally mentor.
Out of the group, only forty were chosen, with Jon and his three companions among them.
For those selected, the excitement was palpable, while disappointment loomed over those left out.
Becoming a student of an Admiral not only promised top-tier training but also added significant weight to their credentials. Upon graduation, being a disciple of Zephyr would undoubtedly be a prestigious distinction.
Jon was naturally thrilled to have made the cut. Though he had been somewhat confident, he lacked the assuredness of Akainu and Kizaru.
He had observed many of his peers during training, noting that several possessed physiques far superior to his own. This observation had weighed on him heavily.
Fortunately, his selection signified that he had taken the perfect first step within the Marine Headquarters.
The following day, Zephyr brought the selected recruits to a classroom and began their lessons.
"From today onward, I will be your instructor. Over the next year, I will personally guide you."
Standing at the lectern, Zephyr looked at the eager young faces before him, feeling a sense of fulfillment. Now freed from front-line battles, he saw great significance in nurturing the next generation of Marines.
"As your senior and instructor, the first lesson I must impart is the harsh reality of this world."
"We are Marines. Our duty is to protect the seas and the people. To do so, we must combat evil—pirates, criminals, bandits—they are all our enemies."
"Fighting these enemies comes at a price: bloodshed and death. Every Marine, even an Admiral, faces the risk of dying in the line of duty. This world is unforgiving. Only by mastering strength can you better safeguard lives and maintain peace across the seas."
"Strength doesn't solely refer to combat prowess. It encompasses a broad spectrum of abilities, including leadership, knowledge, and sound judgment. As the top recruits of this year, these are the skills you must learn."
True to his nature as a man of action, Zephyr transitioned swiftly from his speech to a lecture.
Over the following days, Jon and his peers found themselves in the classroom rather than the training grounds. The lessons spanned from ideological principles to naval combat strategies and navigational skills.
As an Admiral, Zephyr was not only a formidable fighter but also highly knowledgeable in numerous fields. For days, the curriculum remained diverse and non-repetitive.
Jon's routine now revolved around attending classes during the day and exploring his Devil Fruit abilities whenever he could find the time.
Dragon's casual remark earlier had sparked an idea in Jon's mind about the direction of his abilities. Experimentation soon led to significant discoveries.
By targeting specific plants and activating his powers after exhausting his stamina, Jon confirmed that he could absorb the life energy of plants to replenish his own strength—even healing his injuries.
What's more, Jon realized that by using his Observation Haki, he could communicate with plants, understanding their "thoughts" and conveying his intentions to them.
This newfound ability was a synergy between his Devil Fruit powers and Observation Haki. It wasn't the legendary "Voice of All Things" since he could only connect with plants, not other beings.
Through numerous experiments, Jon also discovered an intriguing phenomenon: without using Observation Haki to establish a connection, the energy he extracted from plants was significantly less.
At first, this puzzled him, but further experiments revealed a logical explanation.
Plants, unlike humans, lacked intelligence or complex thoughts. They were akin to simple organisms. However, when Jon reached out to them using Observation Haki, they willingly offered him their energy, yielding far more than when he forcefully took it.
This realization was both surprising and exhilarating.
Previously, Jon had been dissatisfied with his Observation Haki. Despite being a natural-born user, it lacked unique traits, functioning like any ordinary Observation Haki.
Jon knew of others like him who were naturally gifted, such as Otohime and Shirahoshi, both of whom possessed extraordinary abilities.
Otohime could sense thoughts and emotions, projecting her own to influence others' minds and values, creating profound empathy and even altering their beliefs.
Jon, however, couldn't influence others' thoughts or predict the future.
As for the "Voice of All Things," it remained unclear whether it was tied to Observation Haki or an innate gift. Regardless, Jon himself lacked this ability.
Now, however, his Devil Fruit had awakened a unique facet of his Observation Haki—a simplified form of the "Voice of All Things." While limited to plants, this newfound connection thrilled Jon.
For the first time, he felt that his Observation Haki held immense potential. Combined with his Devil Fruit, it provided a clear path for his future development.
