Chapter 66: Chapter 66: The First Clash
"Marines! It's the Marines!"
"Damn it! Why are these Marines so powerful...?"
"Ah! I've been slashed! I... I'm not bleeding, but it hurts so much!"
The pirates shouted in chaos. Wright surveyed the scene, his eyes quickly locking onto the pirate captain, who, despite a grievous slash wound, was desperately trying to escape.
He couldn't help but smirk. "Serves him right for flaunting that flashy captain's coat..."
"Yo, Captain! Care to tell me... where you're hiding that Devil Fruit you just acquired?"
In a flash of golden light, Wright appeared beside the pirate captain. He plunged his longsword, Ashes, into the ground, pinning the captain in place.
"In... in the safe..." the captain stammered, trembling as he mentally screamed, This guy must be a Marine Headquarters officer—he's way too strong! Doflamingo... you can't blame me for this!
"Tch. A safe, huh? Like that'll stop me."
Wright grabbed the captain and stepped over the groaning pirates scattered on the ground. Reaching the safe, he unsheathed Ashes with a sharp, metallic zing.
With a single swing, the safe's door clattered to the ground, revealing a Devil Fruit with pink spirals etched into its surface.
"So this is what it looks like." Wright picked up the Hobby-Hobby Fruit, exhaling in relief. Until he held it in his hands, he hadn't let his guard down for even a second.
Tossing the defeated pirate captain aside, Wright exited the camp. The surrounding sentries had long since fled, terrified by Wright's earlier display of a sword technique that seemed to descend from the heavens.
Wright placed the Hobby-Hobby Fruit in a bag and summoned his Holy Light Wings, preparing to return to the warship.
"Hmm?" His Observation Haki detected a powerful aura rapidly approaching.
"This aura... it's filled with rage... and arrogance..."
"Ah... judging by the timing, it must be him. Doflamingo realized something was wrong and rushed here himself?"
At the edge of the island, Doflamingo, clad in his signature pink feathered coat, flew through the air at high speed, veins bulging on his forehead. His manic grin widened as he let out an unsettling laugh.
"Fuffuffuffuffu... The moment I saw that golden streak from the ship, I knew something was off..."
"The same golden streak appeared back on Minion Island... There's no way this is a coincidence!"
"A Marine with such abilities? I'll see just who dares to come after my property!"
In the center of the camp, Wright stood nonchalantly. Retracting his Holy Light Wings, he securely stored the bag containing the Hobby-Hobby Fruit and casually awaited Doflamingo's arrival.
With a sudden "whoosh," Doflamingo landed in front of him. His gaze locked onto the figure clad in the Justice coat, the golden light radiating from the longsword Ashes. Rage twisted his features into a manic smile.
"Fuffuffuffu... I should have known... That golden light, and the power to heal such grievous wounds..."
"Marine Headquarters Rear Admiral... Wright!"
"Yo! Doflamingo... I've heard plenty about you. By the way, I'm good friends with your brother. In fact, I saved that idiot's life once. So, how do you plan to thank me, big brother?"
Wright's casual, taunting words hit their mark, causing Doflamingo's face to stiffen. The veins on his forehead throbbed violently.
"Fuffuffu... Hahaha... HAHAHA!" Doflamingo threw his head back in laughter, then snarled through gritted teeth, "Rosinante, that traitor. I wish I could kill him all over again!"
"No, you don't." Wright smirked knowingly. "That day, with so many people by your side, you still hesitated. Now you're here alone, just admit it—you care about Rosinante. So, deep down, you're thankful to me, aren't you?"
"..."
"But you started suspecting him the moment you wanted him to eat the Ope-Ope Fruit, didn't you? That ability, where the user sacrifices their life... You were ready to abandon him."
"Still, why were you so indecisive? You could've kept the plan secret, taken the fruit yourself, and Rosinante would've remained loyal to you for Law's sake. Yet you chose to tell him... Why?"
Doflamingo's expression darkened, his emotions shifting rapidly before settling into cold seriousness. "Hmph! I didn't come here to discuss this. Wright, why are you here?"
"Oh? You're not happy to see me in the North Blue?" Wright chuckled as Doflamingo's jaw clenched tightly. "With Vice Admiral Tsuru back at Headquarters, I figured I'm familiar enough with the North Blue to drop by... and maybe mess with the Donquixote Family a little."
Doflamingo felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. This guy's not a swordsman... he's a pest!
"So... you're here to sabotage my business today?" Despite his experience, the younger Doflamingo struggled to maintain his composure.
"Just a Devil Fruit. Surely the illustrious Donquixote Family won't miss it?"
"What bothers me is how you got this intel!"
"Eh? You didn't know? These pirates struck a deal with you and then started boasting about their 'big backer.' I overheard it at a tavern and couldn't believe my ears!"
"..." Doflamingo knew Wright was spewing nonsense, but he couldn't refute it. The scenario was too plausible.
"Fuffuffu..." Doflamingo chuckled darkly. "Let's say I believe you. But Wright, I don't make a habit of letting others take what's mine."
"Oh? Perfect timing then. I don't mind taking your stuff... no pressure at all."
"Hmph! Let's see if you're worthy of such big talk!"
"Five Color Strings!"
Five razor-thin strings shot from Doflamingo's outstretched hand, aiming to slice through Wright. Each string was sharp enough to cut a person in half.
"Zing!"
Ashes sang as it intercepted the attack. Wright, who had been maintaining his Observation Haki, wasn't caught off guard.
"Fast, but not fast enough!"
"Light-Speed Strike!"
"Judgment Slash!"
Wright's figure blurred as he teleported beside Doflamingo, swinging horizontally. But his attack collided with something resilient.
"Spider's Web!"
Doflamingo had quietly prepared his defense—a web of reinforced strings absorbed the brunt of the slash.
Wright vanished again, reappearing at another angle.
"Final Judgement!"
A massive golden slash bore down on Doflamingo, who raised his leg, now coated in Armament Haki, and kicked upward.
"Boom!"
The shockwave from the clash rippled outward, but hidden within the exchange...
"Foot-Thread Slash!"
Sharp threads shot from Doflamingo's foot, empowered by the force of his kick.
"Lightcast Wall!"
Unfazed, Wright conjured a shimmering golden barrier. The threads struck the wall, only to dissipate into harmless ripples.
This was Wright's newest defensive technique, forged from his mastery over Holy Light—a shapeable barrier with formidable resilience. Even Wright himself struggled to breach it. Its drawback, however, was its immense energy cost.
"..." Doflamingo's expression grew serious. This defensive ability is outright infuriating.
"Overheat Threads!"
Five long, needle-like strings descended from above, aiming to impale Wright.
"Clang!"
Another Lightcast Wall materialized, blocking the attack. Doflamingo gritted his teeth in frustration.
"You're a Rear Admiral of the Marines. Are you secretly a damn turtle?!"
