Chapter 64: Chapter 64: The Terrifying Devil Fruit
Thanks to Rosinante's invaluable intelligence, Admiral Sengoku and Vice Admiral Tsuru, two seasoned strategists—or should we say, the Navy's most cunning tacticians—laid an inescapable trap across the North Blue. With lightning speed, they dismantled the majority of the Donquixote Family's underground network, forcing Doflamingo to repeatedly retreat and relocate his headquarters.
Yet, Doflamingo, a master of guile and deception, proved as elusive as ever. Despite Vice Admiral Tsuru's relentless pursuit, she failed to apprehend him, as his extensive underground network continued to plague the North Blue.
While the intelligence provided a significant advantage, eliminating most of Doflamingo's forces was the best the Navy could achieve. After all, their primary strength had to remain focused on the Grand Line, leaving them unable to fully eradicate such a slippery foe.
As time passed, Doflamingo began to recover, preserving a small yet vital portion of his power. Eventually, with the approaching Levely, Vice Admiral Tsuru had no choice but to withdraw her forces to oversee the security preparations for the summit.
The Donquixote Family, left battered and bruised, retreated to lick their wounds. Yet simultaneously, they frantically sought resources—weaponry, equipment, treasures, and Devil Fruits—to restore their strength.
Wright, however, had not participated in the campaign against the Donquixote Family. After rendezvousing with Vice Admiral Tsuru, he ensured Russian's safety before preparing a detailed report to submit to both her and Admiral Sengoku. Once his report was complete, he set sail for Marineford aboard the same ship, accompanied by Rosinante.
"Rear Admiral Wright!"
On the path to Sengoku's office, a Marine saluted him respectfully.
This was no ordinary officer—they were greeting the youngest rear admiral in Marine Headquarters! Wright, the Navy's brightest rising star, nodded in acknowledgment, a polite smile on his face.
Even so, Wright himself felt slightly dazed. Back in Marineford, he had once again been the last to learn of his promotion.
"Sengoku, you old man," Wright thought, stifling a laugh. "You're too reliable when it comes to keeping secrets!"
He knocked on the door and entered Sengoku's office, only to find Rosinante crouched on the floor, a cigarette dangling from his lips as he fed Sengoku's goat.
Seeing Sengoku's dark expression, Wright couldn't help but laugh.
"What's going on here? Father and son having a spat? Captain Rosinante... not to call you out, but Sengoku's goat eats every day without growing a bit. Must've gotten ink poisoning from all those documents. You sure you want to keep feeding it? Want me to check on the poor creature for you?"
"..." Rosinante looked up at Wright, utterly baffled. The dark circles around his eyes only emphasized his confusion.
"Am I losing my touch, or has Wright's sense of humor gotten worse?"
"You insolent brat!" Sengoku roared. "Stop spouting nonsense at the door! Do you think I'd stoop to abusing small animals?"
"Hey now, you said it, not me. I didn't say a thing…" Wright muttered under his breath, closing the door as he walked over to the sofa.
"So, Sengoku, what's this about? I didn't even get a chance to call Garp yet…"
Crack! Sengoku snapped his pencil in two. Wright immediately straightened up, putting on his most innocent expression.
"..." Sengoku sighed in exasperation while Rosinante lit another cigarette, activating his Devil Fruit ability to set up a soundproof barrier.
"All right," Rosinante said, exhaling a puff of smoke. "Who would've thought? Wright, the guy with zero mercy for pirates, went out of his way to cut Senior Pink some slack."
"Even Vice Admiral Sakazuki, notorious for his ruthless pursuit of pirates, once praised you for your iron-fisted eradication of East Blue's pirates," Rosinante continued.
"Well, I'm not as extreme as Sakazuki," Wright replied lazily. "Still, I respect his dedication to military discipline. His contributions to the Navy's moral framework are no small feat."
"Ahem!" Sengoku cleared his throat loudly, forcing the two to focus on him.
"Wright," Sengoku began, "it's gratifying to see you approach this situation with both humanity and integrity. We initially worried that your rapid rise in strength might blind you to such principles."
"Fortunately, our judgment wasn't wrong. You are neither extreme nor reckless. Your steadfast values and moral compass have been a relief to us all. Honestly, I'm curious—what kind of motto will you hang in your office when you reach vice admiral?"
Sengoku gestured to the plaque above his own desk: "Justice Reigns Supreme."
Noticing Wright's expression drifting into amusement, Sengoku quickly changed the topic.
"Losing Rosinante as an undercover agent was a significant blow. Even with his intelligence, we could only delay Doflamingo's plans, not stop him entirely."
"Still, your recent maneuver was impressive. Capturing a cadre-level officer of the Donquixote Family is no easy feat."
"And to think you managed to heal such severe injuries—your mastery of healing abilities has grown significantly. Few could have succeeded in flipping someone like Senor Pink."
"Well…" Wright raised an eyebrow. "Strictly speaking, it wasn't really 'flipping.' But even Senor Pink might not realize how critical the information he's about to provide me will be…"
Rosinante sat up straighter.
"During my years with the Family, I never noticed anything unusual about Senor Pink. It's hard to imagine he has such a hidden past… By the way, what about the 'Hobby-Hobby Fruit' you told him to keep an eye on? Does it really have such unbelievable powers?"
"Eternal youth?" Wright glanced at Rosinante. "You're questioning the absurdity of Devil Fruit abilities now? I've heard of a 'Slip-Slip Fruit' that can turn even the ugliest person into a stunning beauty."
Watching Rosinante gape in astonishment, Wright turned to Sengoku, whose expression had grown increasingly grave.
"Sengoku, do you think I'd go to such lengths for a fruit that only grants eternal youth?"
"This fruit is far more terrifying than you realize."
"The Hobby-Hobby Fruit is a Paramecia-type. Upon consumption, the user ceases to age entirely."
"But that's not all. With a single touch, the user can transform living beings into toys. These toys must follow the contracts imposed by the user, unable to act freely or resist. The effects remain permanent as long as the user remains conscious."
"And the most horrifying part? Those transformed into toys are erased from everyone's memories. They retain their emotions, consciousness, and memories of their former selves—but to the rest of the world, they never existed."
As Wright described the fruit's abilities, Sengoku's expression darkened, and Rosinante clenched his fists.
"With my brother's personality…" Rosinante muttered. "If he acquires this fruit, he'll give it to a loyal subordinate without hesitation."
"Combine that with his target—Dressrosa…"
"He'll turn that beautiful kingdom into a living hell!"
