Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Secret Mission
"I have already made all the necessary arrangements with Vice Admiral Tsuru. The fact that there's a spy within the Navy must never be revealed to ordinary sailors."
"You are tasked with carrying out Vergo's execution—discreetly."
"Vice Admiral Tsuru's landing party will soon arrive at your location with Rosinante. Your role is to assist Rosinante in rejoining the Navy. Vergo, however, will be assigned to conduct a search-and-rescue operation on the outskirts of the town—without any orders to regroup."
"The Donquixote Family has fled, but not before using the 'Birdcage' to massacre everyone in the town. In one hour, the only people left in the area will be you and Vergo."
After issuing these instructions, Sengoku paused before continuing, "The Ope-Ope no Mi is of immense importance. I have promised Rosinante not to pursue the matter further. Therefore, the boy who consumed the Ope-Ope no Mi—Law—must not return to the Navy with Rosinante."
"…I understand. Leave it to me," Wright replied with a sigh. "That brat has been treating me with zero respect. He needs a proper lesson, that's for sure."
"Don't traumatize him, you idiot!" Sengoku roared. "You weren't exactly polite to me when you were younger. Should I teach you a lesson as well?"
Far off, Law, who was experimenting with his newfound powers alongside Rosinante, shivered inexplicably.
"Of course not, haha! I'll take good care of him," Wright laughed. "Rosinante's little brother is practically family to me!"
Rosinante sneezed suddenly, feeling a chill of foreboding.
Sengoku took a deep breath and continued, "Your task is to ensure Law's safety, escort him off Minion Island, and then rendezvous with Vice Admiral Tsuru by your own means. She will be focusing her efforts in the North Blue to dismantle the Donquixote Family's underground networks in the near future."
"Understood. Mission accepted!"
"Phew—" Wright stowed away the Den Den Mushi and turned toward Rosinante and Law. "Sengoku's getting more irritable by the day—definitely Garp's fault."
"No, I think it's yours," Rosinante silently mused.
"Is there a new mission?" Rosinante asked.
"Yes. Vice Admiral Tsuru's forces will arrive soon, and I'll assist you in rejoining the Navy. However, Law cannot come with you."
"…I understand. I anticipated this outcome," Rosinante replied, his voice heavy.
"Cora-san… I… I can't stay with you? Why?" Law exclaimed, his panic palpable. Reunited at last, he couldn't bear the thought of parting again.
"Law, this is to protect you," Rosinante said softly. "The power of the Op-Op Fruit is too significant. You'll understand someday. Until you can defend yourself, never reveal your abilities to anyone. Not even the Navy could protect you then."
"That's why you cannot join the Navy. Law, you are free now. Live according to your will."
Before Law could respond, Wright interjected, "I will escort you off Minion Island. After that, your future is up to you."
"But before that… I have a task to complete. Law, stay silent during what's to come. Rosinante, maybe you should put up a soundproof barrier?"
Law frantically shook his head like a rattle. He was perceptive enough to realize he had no say in the matter and that his only option was to follow this abrasive Commodore. Though Wright wasn't inherently bad, his personality was insufferable. Another soundproof barrier might only provoke Wright into finding another excuse to pummel him.
But as Law watched Wright more closely, he noticed something he hadn't before. Despite his fiery temper, Wright wielded a sword—a stunningly beautiful blade. Maybe I'll need a sword like that someday.
Raising an eyebrow, Wright's Observation Haki alerted him to Vice Admiral Tsuru's landing party approaching. "Alright, time to part ways. Be ready."
Rosinante officially rejoined the Navy as a Headquarters Commander. Thirty minutes remained before the landing forces would withdraw, leaving just three individuals on the island: Wright, Law, and Vergo—unaware of the trap he was walking into.
"Law, watch closely. If you ever want to avenge Rosinante and stop Doflamingo, you must become stronger."
"If you can't even follow the intensity of the battle to come, forget about revenge. That path will only lead to your death. Without your life, you'll achieve nothing."
"…I will grow stronger," Law said after a long silence. "I watched Cora-san get shot by Doflamingo multiple times. Without your intervention, I would've lost him forever.
"Even though I have to part ways with him now, one day, I'll find him again—with my own strength.
"Cora-san's wish was to stop Doflamingo's crimes. I'll make that my goal too. The greatest punishment for him is to thwart his ambitions."
"Rosinante has returned to the Navy. Stop referring to him as part of the Donquixote Family. He despises that name. 'Corazon' was nothing but a title for a sacrificial pawn.
"From now on, call him Rosinante. As for me, you can call me Commodore Wright."
"…"
"Do you have a problem with that?!"
"No, not at all… haha…"
"Smart kid."
"Your current abilities aren't enough to cure your Amber Lead Syndrome," Wright said, a golden flame forming in his hand. Tossing it onto Law, he continued, "Even if you expel the remaining amber lead from your body, the damage it's already caused is irreversible."
To Law's surprise, the stiff sensation in his body began to fade as vitality returned.
"This might affect your physical development and even limit your potential. My Eternal Flame can heal internal injuries. Use your Op-Op Fruit to remove the remaining lead as practice."
"…Thank you, Commodore Wright," Law said sincerely. He knew Wright had gone beyond his duty, solely because of Rosinante.
"That idiot Rosinante… If he'd just called me, I could've fixed this disease with a wave of my hand. I didn't know about Flevance because the World Government sealed the information. But Rosinante had six months to tell me!"
"He didn't want me to confront Doflamingo, huh? Ridiculous. I could've crushed him back when we were recruits. I'll definitely have a word with him later."
"Please don't trouble Cora—uh, Rosinante!" Law pleaded.
As thirty minutes passed, Wright sensed the naval ships withdrawing. Isolated and unaware, Vergo—the original "Corazon" of the Donquixote Family—was still dutifully carrying out his task.
"All right, Law. Hide here."
"Now, it's time for me to have a little 'chat' with Vergo about his experiences as a spy…"
