Chapter 52: Chapter 52: A Thousand Miles to the Rescue
"Huff... so this is the North Blue? It's a lot colder than the East Blue."
Having crossed the Calm Belt, Wright stood at the bow of the warship. Without Garp's antics causing chaos, they avoided having to fight their way through. This was an urgent mission—time was of the essence!
"Commodore Wright, it will take approximately a week to rendezvous with Vice Admiral Tsuru," a Marine reported.
This young rear admiral was already considered legendary—every ship he commanded boasted a record of zero casualties. To sail under his leadership was to guarantee survival.
"Understood," Wright replied, frowning. "Speed up if possible. A week is cutting it close; Vice Admiral Tsuru's timing is already set."
He hoped they would make it in time. Once he got within range, his mobility might still allow him to act.
In the snow-covered North Blue, on the island of Minion, a shadowy figure draped in a black feathered coat crept toward a house perched on a hillside in the center of town.
Inside, the house's occupant—a former Marine turned pirate named Barrels—was toying with a peculiar fruit. Around him, the members of his pirate crew lounged in indulgence. The strange fruit in his hand was the Ope Ope no Mi, a Devil Fruit coveted by many.
"This Ope Ope no Mi is worth 5 billion berries..."
"Haha! The World Government must've gone insane to set a price like that!"
"With that kind of money, we'd never have to keep pirating!"
"Pfft, legends say some doctor once got this fruit and became a mythical healer. But what does that have to do with brutes like us?"
Suddenly—BOOM!—a violent explosion rocked the house, yet not a sound accompanied it. The lights flickered and went out, plunging the crew into confusion.
Another silent explosion erupted in the chaos, its eerie flames illuminating the panic.
Within this soundless bedlam, the figure in the black feathered coat dashed down the snow-covered hill, clutching the Ope Ope no Mi. But as luck would have it, he slipped and tumbled, crashing into a guard at the base of the hill.
Caught off guard, the figure, desperate to protect the fruit, fought through his injuries to overpower the sentry and flee into a dilapidated house. Inside, he cradled a child wearing a spotted knit cap and marked with peculiar white blotches on his face.
"Law! Look at this—this is the Ope Ope no Mi! It will save your life! Quickly, eat it!"
"Corazon... even if I eat it, it might not cure me..."
"Don't spout nonsense! It'll work!"
"Eat it! Swallow it whole!"
Rosinante, better known as Corazon, force-fed the priceless Devil Fruit into the boy's mouth, forcing him to swallow it.
"Ugh… it's awful!" Law grimaced, swallowing with difficulty. "Corazon... I'm not ready to become a Devil Fruit user..."
"Law, take this." Rosinante handed him a softly glowing golden crystal.
"This is a miraculous crystal... see? I have one too. Keep it with you at all times. If you meet any Marines, they'll protect you unconditionally."
"It's so beautiful..." Law stared at the crystal in a daze. "The Marines will protect me? Corazon, you..."
Before he could finish, he looked up to see Rosinante, bloodied and collapsing.
"Aren't we there yet?"
A week had passed. Delayed by a storm, the planned rendezvous with Vice Admiral Tsuru had run into trouble.
"Commodore Wright, we are now entering the waters near Swallow Island. At most, it will take half a day to meet up with Vice Admiral Tsuru," the Marine reporting suddenly paused as he noticed Wright's expression darken.
"What's wrong?"
"There's no time!" Wright gritted his teeth. "Relay my orders: the ship will proceed as planned to rendezvous with Vice Admiral Tsuru. I'm going ahead to complete the mission alone!"
"Yes, sir!" The Marine watched as Wright leapt into the air.
A flash of golden light surrounded him, and two radiant wings materialized on his back.
The translucent golden wings shimmered with intricate feather patterns, surrounded by a golden mist.
Paired with his white justice coat, the sight was breathtaking.
"So... cool..." the Marine murmured, awestruck.
Wright's wings flared as he ascended, leaving a golden trail in the sky. This was his newest ability—Wings of Holy Light, developed for long-distance flight.
After discussions with Kizaru about abilities, Wright had devised this technique. Unable to fully elementalize, he instead imbued his Holy Light constructs with an elemental state, harnessing its properties for speed and propulsion. The result? A swift, sustained flight mode that even outpaced News Coo birds.
"The Lightcast Beacon Crystal is active... which means Rosinante is in critical condition. He's already fed the Ope Ope no Mi to Law, and now he's encountered Vergo... no, Doflamingo must have shot him!"
Soaring through the air, Wright's thoughts raced. "That idiot is too softhearted... Luckily, Swallow Island is close, and Minion Island is just ten minutes away by direct flight."
"Judging by the crystal's signal, I'm headed straight for him. Damn it! I need to go faster!"
Channeling additional Holy Light into his wings, Wright activated the Light Speed effect. Though it drained him significantly, his speed increased by 30%.
"There's Swallow Island... and that's Vice Admiral Tsuru's warship. She's moving toward Minion Island? She must've realized something's wrong—impressive as always, Vice Admiral Tsuru!"
"Rosinante, you idiot. Your ability should've developed enough to avoid this. I told you not to die!"
A blazing golden streak tore across the sky, piercing through thick clouds.
Moments earlier, on Minion Island, Rosinante sat slumped against a large chest, his body battered and bloodied.
Before him stood the cold, unyielding members of the Donquixote Family, encircling their captain.
Dressed in a flamboyant pink feathered coat, with short blond hair, dark red sunglasses, and a matching suit, stood Donquixote Doflamingo—Rosinante's elder brother.
Expressionless, Doflamingo stared down at his brother. The dark lenses of his glasses concealed his thoughts.
Rosinante lit a cigarette with trembling hands. The surrounding family members remained silent, as though they were watching a dead man.
After a moment, Rosinante drew a pistol, aiming it at Doflamingo.
"Marineford Code 01746. Marine Headquarters. Commander Rosinante reporting..."
"Donquixote Family captain, Doflamingo... I infiltrated to stop your atrocities..."
"I am a Marine!"
