No Path but the Void

Chapter 6: Shadows of the Past

The deep silence of the colony was often broken only by the sounds of distant movements or the occasional rumble of the earth shifting. Zami, however, had long since grown accustomed to this eerie stillness. It was a world where time moved differently, and centuries bled into one another, leaving only fleeting remnants of memories.

Today, however, there was a subtle shift in the air—something was different. As he walked through the dark corridors, Zami's thoughts returned to the time when his clan had been annihilated.

The Agatoru clan had been known for its unparalleled strength, not because of supernatural abilities or divine blessings, but through relentless training and mastery over the mind, body, and spirit. They had built their teachings on the foundation of combat, honing skills that were as sharp as the blades they wielded.

Zami had been just a child when the clan fell, but he remembered the teachings vividly—the endless drills, the rigorous mental exercises, the profound philosophy of embracing pain and pushing beyond the limits of the human body. His sensei, an older man whose name had long since faded from his mind, would often speak of the ultimate goal of the clan:

"Strength is not just in the body, but in the heart and mind. Only by conquering one's own limits can one ever truly become strong."

Zami had taken this lesson to heart more than any other. He had surpassed every limit, both physical and mental, that the clan had set for him. It was this training that had kept him alive through the years of solitude in the monster colony.

Zami's mind returned to the present as he reached the inner sanctum of the colony—a massive cavern filled with the remnants of past battles. He felt the weight of his katana, the familiar hum of its energy. Yet, today, his hand rested on the dagger he had crafted from the rib of the toxic creature. Its balance was perfect, sharp enough to cut through even the toughest materials. It was a backup, but also an extension of his skill.

He had learned long ago that true mastery lay not just in one weapon, but in the ability to adapt and use any available tool in combat. In the years he had spent alone, Zami had refined his skills with various weaponry.

He had perfected the use of his katana in combat—strikes that cut through the air faster than sound, slashing techniques that left no time for his enemies to react. But he had also learned the subtle art of using smaller weapons like his dagger, combining the speed and precision of his sword with the quick thrusts of a smaller blade.

In the dark depths of the colony, there was no room for arrogance. Zami had learned that the terrain could be used to his advantage—sharp rocks, fallen debris, and even the creatures' bodies were fair game. His mind raced as he recalled the various techniques he had developed over the years:

- Blade Bind: A technique in which Zami uses his katana or dagger to parry an enemy's blow, then quickly counters with a fast, precise strike to the weak points of the opponent's body.

- Stone Slash: Using the environment, Zami had perfected the technique of bouncing off walls or pillars to gain the upper hand, striking from unexpected angles with increased force.

- Hidden Strike: A deceptive move where Zami feigns a strike in one direction before using the dagger to slice through the enemy's defenses from the other side.

After his training, Zami returned to the small alcove where he spent much of his time. The dim glow of the fire reflected off his katana and the freshly sharpened dagger. As he sat down to rest, his thoughts shifted once more to the past.

He didn't often reflect on his clan—there was no time for nostalgia in a world like this—but something about the cold isolation of the colony brought those memories back. He wondered if there were any others like him, survivors who had learned to adapt and thrive in such harsh conditions.

For now, however, his focus remained on the present. The colony was filled with threats, and his journey was far from over.

With a final glance at the dagger, Zami stood and prepared for what lay ahead.
