Chapter 5: The Beating of the Earth
The rumbling intensified as Zami moved through the maze-like tunnels. He kept his steps silent, his katana sheathed but within easy reach. The air grew heavy with the scent of damp stone and something sharper—blood, perhaps, or something worse.
His mind was calm, his thoughts focused. This was not the first time the colony had sent something massive his way. Whatever it was, it would be like all the others: a beast to be outwitted, dissected, and left behind.
Ahead, the tunnel opened into a vast chamber illuminated by faintly glowing crystals embedded in the walls. At its center stood a creature unlike any he had seen before—a hulking, four-armed beast with a body that shimmered as if coated in oil. Its head bore no eyes, only a gaping maw filled with jagged teeth.
It turned toward him, sensing his presence despite its blindness. With a deafening roar, it charged, the ground quaking beneath its weight.
Zami waited until the last possible moment before sidestepping, his movements precise and economical. The beast's massive arms swung wildly, shattering a column of rock where he had been standing moments ago.
He didn't hesitate. Using the momentum of his dodge, he lunged forward, aiming a single, sound-breaking thrust at the creature's exposed flank. The **Super Fast Pierce** struck, the sonic boom echoing through the chamber as the katana pierced deep into the beast's flesh.
The creature howled, its oily body writhing as dark fluid gushed from the wound. Zami pulled back, his eyes scanning for the next opportunity. The creature, however, was not finished—it lashed out with its remaining arms, forcing him to retreat.
Zami's gaze flicked to the environment. The room was littered with jagged rock formations and scattered debris, perfect tools for a tactician.
As the beast charged again, Zami leaped onto a nearby ledge, kicking loose a boulder as he ascended. The rock tumbled down, striking the creature's leg and causing it to stumble.
He followed up with a swift *Arrow Flow*, his body rotating midair as he delivered a spinning kick to the side of the beast's head. The force knocked it off balance, sending it crashing into the ground.
Before it could recover, Zami closed the distance, his movements a blur. He unleashed a *Wild Cat Flow*, a series of quick maneuvers that destabilized the creature further. With its balance destroyed, Zami shifted into an *Earth Slam*, grappling one of its massive arms and forcing its head down into the stone floor.
The creature writhed, its strength immense, but Zami held firm. With a final, calculated motion, he delivered a *Critical Dues*, driving his palms into the base of its skull. The resulting shock stilled the beast, its body collapsing in a lifeless heap.
Zami stood over the corpse, his breathing steady. His hands throbbed from the exertion, the faint sting of overstrained muscles reminding him of his limits. He flexed his fingers, noting the slight tremor in his right hand.
"Even after all this time, there are consequences," he thought, his expression unreadable.
He took a moment to clean his katana, the glowing symbols along its blade flickering as the dark blood slid off. Then, with a final glance at the fallen beast, he moved to collect what he could.
The creature's oily flesh was too toxic to consume, but its bones were another matter. With practiced efficiency, Zami fashioned a crude dagger from one of its shattered ribs, testing its weight and balance. It wasn't ideal, but it could serve as a backup weapon in a pinch.
Back in his alcove, Zami prepared a simple meal of roasted meat and crushed roots, his movements deliberate and precise. The firelight cast shadows on the walls, giving the small space an air of uneasy warmth.
As he ate, his thoughts turned inward. The colony was relentless, each day a test of his resolve. Yet he endured, not out of hope or vengeance, but because he had no other choice.
"This place will not break me," he thought, his gaze fixed on the flickering flames. "I will break it."
In the distance, the faint sound of shifting stone echoed through the tunnels. Another challenge awaited.
Zami finished his meal, his resolve as unshakable as ever.
