Chapter 9: Obito and Rin Part 2
Yasu wasn't sure if he should go with Obito to the Uchiha district or not. In truth, he needed to go because it was part of his plan to improve himself while staying hidden from the village and Danzo.
Yasu was allowed in the Uchiha district because of his friendship with Obito, but mainly because he was a civilian. Furthermore, he wasn't even a shinobi at the moment. The Uchiha clan didn't exactly accept him; they completely ignored him.
If Yasu were a shinobi, he wouldn't be allowed into the Uchiha district. In the future, Yasu planned to use this to his advantage. Once he awakened the Sharingan, he could claim to be an Uchiha orphan and not just a civilian. The Sharingan itself would be the best proof of this.
With that, he could learn Uchiha jutsus and fighting techniques and possibly ask the Uchiha clan leader to hide his abilities from the village. He could explain that he was worried about Danzo or that revealing his skills might tarnish the Uchiha clan's reputation, given that he had worse academy grades than Obito—who was already considered a disgrace by the Uchiha clan.
But the reason Yasu hesitated to go was that he felt humiliated and belittled by the other Uchiha clan members' looks whenever he went there with Obito. It was rare for someone to fail to become a genin, and with the Uchiha's pride, it was a recipe for disaster for Yasu.
"All right, Obito, I'll go with you, but let's avoid the training grounds. I don't want to see the other Uchiha," Yasu said.
"Sure, I don't want to see them either and get ignored. Besides, it's already getting dark, so it's less likely we'll run into anyone," Obito replied.
With that, Obito and Yasu went to the Uchiha district. They were lucky to encounter only a few people, avoiding any trouble. Obito's grandmother was very happy to see them, and Obito started sharing stories about the war.
A few hours after dinner, Yasu finally left, promising to meet Obito the next day so they could train together.
The following day, Yasu went to the training grounds and found Obito. He also saw that Rin had arrived. She must have gone to visit her family after returning to Konoha. After witnessing so many young shinobi die, Rin was likely prepared for the same fate each time she went to war.
"Hi, Rin! It's great to see you again. I was thinking of looking for you after training with Obito this morning," Yasu said with a smile.
"Hi, Yasu, it's good to see you too. Obito came to find me this morning to watch your training. He said you might need my skills after your sparring session," Rin replied with a smile.
Yasu quickly realized that Obito must have used the training session as an excuse to find Rin earlier that morning. Obito had probably told her he would fight Yasu and injure him, so Rin had come along—though she framed it as being there to heal them both to protect Yasu's pride.
"All right, thanks, Rin. With you here, we can take the sparring more seriously. But first, let's head to another place," Yasu said.
Yasu led Rin and Obito toward the Forest of Death. They found it odd that Yasu wanted to train there, as it was considered a dangerous place even for chunin from the village.
However, they trusted Yasu and no longer feared the Forest of Death after becoming chunin and fighting in the war multiple times. They walked for a while and soon arrived at the spot where Yasu usually trained.
"Sorry for not explaining and bringing you here," Yasu began. "Over the past few months, I've broken through some sort of barrier in my body, and the results of my years of training have finally surfaced. My chakra has increased significantly, and I've become much stronger."
"I trust you both, which is why I'm sharing this with you. But I ask that you keep this a secret. I'm afraid the village might think I've always had this strength and accuse me of avoiding the war. They might send me on a mission meant to kill me as punishment," Yasu said seriously.
Obito and Rin were surprised by Yasu's revelation that he had suddenly grown much stronger. They were the ones most familiar with the humiliation Yasu had endured at the ninja academy for his lack of strength and inability to graduate.
Obito was happy that Yasu had decided to trust him with this secret, but he thought Yasu was wrong to distrust the village and suspect they might want to kill him. The village was in desperate need of any available shinobi, even sending out students who had just graduated from the academy. If Yasu had indeed become stronger, he could help the village rather than being easily discarded.
"Yasu, thank you for trusting us. I'll definitely keep your secret if it's necessary, but I think you're overreacting. The village needs shinobi now more than ever. If you reveal your newfound strength, you'll be able to help Konoha and won't be easily killed," said Obito.
"Obito, you're underestimating the darkness in the hearts of some people in this village," Yasu replied. "The Hokage might not do such a thing, but decisions about my punishment might not even reach him before being finalized. I'm just a civilian shinobi without a clan. To the village, I could become nothing more than a disposable tool in this war."
"I don't agree, Yasu. Konoha isn't like that. Many people have died in this war simply because we're surrounded by the other four great villages. Konoha needs shinobi and wouldn't abandon you just because you're a civilian. Look at Minato-sensei," said Obito.
"I'm not saying the village would abandon me solely because I'm a civilian," Yasu explained. "But as a punishment for suspecting that I was hiding my strength and avoiding the war. Minato-sensei is a different kind of civilian ninja—he's aligned with the Hokage's faction and is a genius."
"Besides, in a situation like mine, anyone can be discarded for the sake of the village or certain individuals. People can be sent on suicide missions with little chance of success. Even your own team could face such a mission, including Minato-sensei."
"Even Sakumo Hatake, who was one of the strongest shinobi, ended up taking his own life out of shame after failing to complete an impossible mission given by the village. That could happen to anyone. I just want to have the strength to protect myself before something like that happens to me," Yasu said.
