Chapter 14: A Mission of Fate: The Priestess' Burden
[Led by Shion, the Konoha team arrived at the waterfall behind the shrine. Naruto, walking in front, couldn't help but exclaim, "Isn't this a dead end?"]
["This is where the shrine maidens bathe. There's an escape route behind the waterfall," Shion explained, walking towards the cascading water.]
["How about this? Leave the villagers behind," Neji suggested, but Shion replied willfully, "I'm the shrine maiden of this village. I can leave the followers behind if I choose to!"
[The group continued on toward the Hidden Swamp Village. Shion, who was being carried by Sakura, didn't miss a chance to comment on Sakura's carrying skills. "This is so uncomfortable. Your body doesn't even look like a woman's at all."]
["Damn it!!!" Sakura's forehead bulged with blue veins. If it weren't for the mission, she would've punched Shion directly.]
"Damn it!!" Sakura muttered in frustration. Naruto quickly sat up, fearing the storm he might face next.
["This priestess is so venomous!" one voice in the crowd remarked.]
["Yeah, what's wrong with having a flat chest? You know how much fabric is saved with a flat chest!" another voice chimed in.]
["No, fabric doesn't matter. Girls are more attractive if they are fuller," another voice responded.]
Naruto thought this was his chance to intervene. He gave Sakura a thumbs up and said, "Don't listen to them, Sakura! Even flat girls are cute. For example... um, saves on fabric, right?"
Then Sakura punched Naruto on the head. "Why am I even discussing this with you? Shut up, idiot!"
[Suddenly, an arrow shot from the front, blocking their way. Everyone turned to see that it was Ashio.]
[Shion looked at Ashio impatiently, "What do you want?"]
[Ashio approached calmly and said, "My duty is to never leave Shion-sama."]
["You're just in the way! Go back to the village!" Shion snapped.]
[The two began arguing, but in the end, Ashio won slightly, allowing him to follow the Konoha team. However, since they couldn't match the speed of the ninja team, they had to stop periodically so Ashio could catch up.]
["Although the intention is good, it's delaying the mission," Neji said, frustrated. "When on a mission, it's best not to let irrelevant people—especially regular villagers—interfere. Not only does it waste energy to protect them, but it can lead to mistakes."]
[Later, at the shrine, Shion looked at Ashio with some concern. Ashio noticed this and shook his head. "Don't worry, Lady Shion. I'm fine."]
[Ashio didn't care about the remarks made by the others, knowing that his current training was all for this moment: to protect Shion and fulfill his duties.]
[As night fell, the group stopped at the edge of a cliff. After scanning the surroundings with his Byakugan, Neji confirmed there were no signs of the enemy. "Let's camp here," he ordered.]
"Isn't this an emergency?" Naruto asked, confused by Neji's decision. Xiao Li explained, "If it were just us, we could push forward for days, but..."1
["Shion and Ashio have reached their limits," Sakura finished, seeing the exhaustion on their faces.]
[Shion, however, retorted stubbornly, "I'm fine!"]
[Ashio, more practical, reminded her, "Lady Shion, the sealing technique requires strength. Please rest well tonight."]
["I'm hungry, hurry up and eat!" Shion grumbled, turning her head away after being unable to argue further. Naruto, irritated, muttered, "You're putting on airs again."]
[Shion continued to complain about the food, and Neji explained, "If we light a bonfire, it's like telling the enemy where we are."]
[But Shion was uninterested in his explanation. She stood up defiantly, "I'm going to sleep."]
Naruto muttered, "The more I look at her, the angrier I get! This priestess reminds me of those annoying clients before."
"Exactly! She doesn't know anything, yet she's ordering us around like she's in charge," another voice chimed in.
"Yeah, what's so noble about her, anyway?"
Naruto, feeling just as frustrated with Shion, added, "What a disgusting priestess!"
Though most of the younger team members shared the same sentiments, Kakashi and Guy held different views. Kakashi, for one, was starting to understand why Shion acted this way—her power was something that could cause fear in others.
[Suddenly, a familiar bell rang. Shion, who had been asleep, opened her eyes, and purple kaleidoscopic patterns filled her vision. She saw a vision of herself, bleeding from the corner of her mouth and collapsing to the ground.]
[The prophecy ended, but Shion didn't seem frightened. She looked at her three guards, glancing up at the sky as if deep in thought.]
[On the cliff's edge, Naruto approached Ashio, hesitating before asking about the prediction.]
[Ashio, understanding Naruto's curiosity, didn't tease him. "Lady Shion's predictions are only about the lives of those around her."]
["Even if she knows she's going to die, can't she avoid it?" Naruto asked urgently.]
["No," Ashio replied. "No matter how hard you try, fate can't be changed. The people who were predicted to die will usually sacrifice themselves for Shion-sama. If they survive, the prophecy will usually change, and Shion-sama would die instead."]
[Hearing this, Naruto no longer felt the panic he had earlier when he thought he might die. He listened to Ashio's story, absorbing the information. "I see… recently, even people in the village have started fearing Shion-sama's predictions. Many have retreated in fear. I don't know if the prophecy will still hold, but it might depend on the attitude of those who were predicted."]
[Naruto sighed as he looked up, his mind briefly drifting to a time when he sat alone on the swing, watching the other children play. He recalled how they avoided Shion, too afraid to interact with her.]
["Huh? I understand that Shion was rejected by everyone, but why does Naruto look like he feels the same way?" someone in the crowd remarked.]
["Because that guy is... him," another voice answered mysteriously.
["Who? Can you stop being so cryptic and just explain?" came the frustrated response.]
["Heh, you think you can get information from the sky? Nice try, though."]
["Well, we can analyze something from the pictures in the sky," someone continued. "Since Naruto feels the same way Shion does, it means he also holds some terrifying power. What that power is will depend on what the sky shows us next."]
["Well done, brother! You're great at analyzing. Interested in joining our village? We've got some great perks for you!"]
