Chapter 81: Chapter:78
Hirito had no way of knowing about Shinichi's internal musings.
After summoning the blue bird, Hirito leaped onto its back and said to the group, "Shinichi-sensei, I'll go ahead to scout the area."
"Alright, be careful," Shinichi replied, reassured by Hirito's Byakugan ability and the advantage of his flying Summoning Beast. Flying ninjas were rare in the shinobi world, and apart from the Third Tsuchikage, Onoki, Shinichi didn't know many who could soar through the skies freely.
With a loud bird cry, Hirito and the bluebird shot into the air, quickly becoming a black dot in the distance, much to the envy of Minato and Nonō.
As they watched him disappear, Minato turned to Shinichi, his eyes wide with admiration. "Shinichi-sensei, how can I get a Summoning Beast like that?"
Shinichi chuckled at the hopeful looks on both Minato's and Nonō's faces. He decided to temper their expectations.
"Summoning beasts aren't easy to come by. Most of the time, they're inherited through family contracts, like the Sarutobi clan's Summoning of the ape, or they're bred from a young age with secret training methods, like the Inuzuka and Aburame clans.
"Sometimes, powerful shinobi are lucky enough to form contracts by earning the recognition of the Summoning beasts themselves. This is how Lord Hokage's apprentices, Orochimaru and Jiraiya, obtained their Summoning beasts."
He paused to let the reality sink in.
"Good Summoning beasts are versatile. They can aid in direct combat, reconnaissance, information gathering, and even support in battle."
Minato and Nonō both lowered their heads in thought. As orphans, they had no family inheritance, and the chances of being recognized by a powerful Summoning Beast seemed slim. Their most realistic option was to find and train one on their own, but the question remained—what type of Summoning Beast would suit them best?
Shinichi noticed their thoughtful expressions and offered some advice.
"For example, take Hirito. I don't know why he chose a bird as his Summoning Beast, but it works well for him."
He looked at them, gauging their understanding. "Do you both know about the Byakugan's abilities?"
They nodded. As teammates, it was essential to have a basic understanding of each other's strengths.
"Byakugan grants exceptional long-range vision, and with Hirito flying high in the sky, he can spot enemy ambushes or traps from a safe distance. No ambush can escape his detection from that altitude… unless…"
Minato quickly interjected, "Unless the enemy can also fly, or they can launch a long-range ninjutsu attack to reach him in the air."
Nonō's eyes widened slightly. "Is there really ninjutsu that can hit someone hundreds of meters in the air?"
Shinichi paused, thinking, before answering. "There may be… but it's rare."
A few minutes later, the sound of birdsong announced Hirito's return. He landed smoothly, patting the bluebird on its back. "Go ahead and play," he told the bird.
With a happy chirp, the bluebird flapped its wings and took off again.
"Shinichi-sensei, I scouted the area. The next thirty kilometers are clear. No ambushes," Hirito reported.
"Good. Let's keep moving," Shinichi responded, though his expression briefly darkened as he felt an unusual disturbance.
Just as quickly, Shinichi regained his composure, but Hirito caught the flicker of concern in his eyes. He sent a silent message through subtle genjutsu manipulation, transmitting sound in secret.
"Sensei, I hid the real situation," Hirito's voice echoed in Shinichi's mind.
Shinichi raised an eyebrow in response. "What do you mean?"
"There's a group of bandits ahead, twenty-three of them in total, lying in ambush twenty kilometers from here. Three of them have chakra signatures, but they're weak—slightly stronger than Nonō. They're likely wandering ninjas."
Shinichi glanced at Hirito, understanding immediately. This was a perfect opportunity for Minato and Nonō to gain practical experience in a real combat scenario.
Three weak ninjas and a group of ordinary bandits—nothing too dangerous, but challenging enough for beginners.
Shinichi gave a slight nod, silently agreeing to Hirito's plan.
The group continued their journey, the mood lightened by small talk. Takeuchi Ryo, ever the businessman, began introducing the team to some of the local delicacies and sights in Harajuku Street.
"When you reach Harajuku Street, I highly recommend a visit to the hot springs," Takeuchi suggested. "The Yufuin Onsen is a personal favorite. You should also try their yam porridge—it's delicious! It's made by chopping up yams and boiling them in sweet kudzu juice."
Hirito, who had been quietly walking, perked up at the mention of a hot spring. He realized just how grimy and sweaty he felt after two days of travel. A hot bath sounded perfect.
"There are also plenty of other delicacies," Takeuchi continued enthusiastically. "Steamed abalone, fried rice cakes, grilled octopus, Uji sweetfish, and salmon roe..."
The vivid descriptions left Minato and Nonō salivating, though Hirito, despite his calm demeanor, couldn't help but feel his stomach grumble as well.
Nonō, especially, couldn't help but think about the children at the orphanage, many of whom had never even heard of such delicacies. The thought made her feel a pang of sympathy for them.
Minato, on the other hand, found himself imagining what those dishes would taste like. His thoughts were abruptly interrupted when he sensed a change in the air.
"Be careful!" Minato warned, his voice tense.
Before the words even fully left his mouth, the bushes ahead rustled, and a group of bandits appeared from behind the trees. They were armed with swords and looked every bit the part of ruthless highwaymen.
Without missing a beat, three of them activated an Earth Style jutsu in unison.
"Earth Style—Earth Shore Return!" x3
The ground shook beneath their feet as a wall of earth rose to block their path. Dust and debris filled the air.
Shinichi, standing behind the group, simply smiled. The ambush had begun, just as planned.
(End of the Chapter).
