Chapter 24: Tsunade's threat

Orochimaru's Side

After walking away, Orochimaru stuck out his long tongue and licked his lips, muttering to himself with amusement, "Who could've done this?"

"Interesting... Very interesting. Looks like Danzo has pissed off someone he really shouldn't have."

But he didn't dwell on it for long.

Right now, he had other priorities.

His Wood Release experiment had reached a critical stage. He felt like he was on the verge of success, but he just couldn't grasp the final key.

It frustrated him.

"If I had Tsunade's help, the success rate would be much higher."

"Too bad... I absolutely can't let her find out about this, let alone get her involved. She'd flip out if she knew."

"But... I heard Tsunade recently took in a monstrous disciple with extraordinary talent in medical ninjutsu. Wonder if he's any use?"

The key issue—this disciple was a Uchiha.

That fact alone had piqued Orochimaru's curiosity.

However, since Uchiha Kira was Tsunade's student, getting him involved would almost certainly mean Tsunade would find out.

"Forget it, I'll figure out another way."

At the end of the day, Orochimaru just couldn't bring himself to believe that a three-year-old kid who had only been learning from Tsunade for a few months could actually be of any help.

If medical ninjutsu were that easy, it would lose its prestige.

Sure, there were plenty of rumors from the hospital about how amazing Uchiha Kira was, but Orochimaru remained skeptical.

He had seen plenty of Geniuses in his time—including himself.

But even Geniuses had their limits.

No matter how talented Uchiha Kira was, it would take years, maybe even decades, before he could contribute to this kind of research.

That is... if he even lived that long.

Orochimaru was well aware that Danzo had his eyes on the kid.

Thinking about Uchiha Kira made Orochimaru recall another former student—Nawaki.

Looking up at the distant sky, Orochimaru's lips curled into a slight smile as he muttered in his raspy voice, "Tsunade, let's see if you can protect your people this time."

Hokage's Office

Danzo pushed open the door and strode in, shutting it behind him.

Before Hiruzen could speak, Danzo took the initiative, his tone sharp and aggressive: "Hiruzen, it's time to clean up the spies in the village!"

"They're already openly manipulating public opinion to smear me and sow discord within the village. Unacceptable!"

Hiruzen: "..."

Do you really think I'm an idiot?

How could you say something so ridiculous with a straight face?

"You—"

Just as Hiruzen was about to speak—

Boom!

The next second, an explosion erupted behind Danzo.

Hiruzen watched as his office door shattered into pieces, and a foot—surrounded by debris—slammed directly into Danzo's back.

"Pfft!!"

Danzo was instantly sent flying, blood spurting from his mouth mid-air.

"Who the hell—?!"

In mid-air, his shock turned into fury as he forcefully twisted his head to see who the culprit was.

His gaze met Tsunade's.

Cold. Murderous. Merciless.

Danzo immediately swallowed the rest of his words.

He knew exactly why she was here.

And he had a gut feeling—if he dared to curse at her right now, this crazy woman just might kill him.

Suppressing his rage and humiliation, Danzo kept his mouth shut and continued hurtling toward Hiruzen.

He assumed Hiruzen would catch him.

But—

Hiruzen, the sly old fox, simply flicked his pipe and used the Body Flicker Technique to teleport out of the way.

He dodged both the incoming blood spray and Danzo's entire body.

"Phew! That was close! That was close!"

Relieved, Hiruzen turned and found himself meeting Danzo's dark, resentful gaze.

He responded with a look that said: "Danzo, this is for your own good."

"You saw Tsunade's state just now. If she doesn't get to vent, she might actually kill you."

"Consider this a favor to your life."

What? You're saying you were falsely accused? You didn't conduct the Wood Release experiments or mess with the First Hokage's body?

Please, do you think I don't know?

We dug up Hashirama's body together, remember?

The experiment failed, so we put him back. But I never expected you to secretly take him out again.

Thinking about it, Hiruzen felt annoyed with Danzo too.

Maybe that was part of why he had dodged just now—his own subtle way of warning Danzo.

Because Danzo had overstepped his authority.

Danzo instantly understood Hiruzen's message, and his frustration soared.

Betrayed.

Hiruzen was always like this—stabbing him in the back and making him take the fall.

Too much.

This was exactly why he wanted to become Hokage.

Then he could turn the tables—make Hiruzen take all the blame and feel what it was like to be in his position.

Boom!

Lost in thought, Danzo crashed through the office wall and nearly fell from the third floor.

"Cough, cough!"

Coughing up blood, he glared at Tsunade with a dark expression. "Even though you've attacked me, I'll still say this—I did nothing to the First Hokage. Those are just rumors."

Tsunade coldly stared at him for several seconds before speaking in a chilling voice: "This was just a warning. If I ever find proof that you've done what they say—watch your back. You might not live to regret it."

With that, she didn't even glance at Hiruzen and strode out.

Hiruzen: "..."

Was Danzo just unlucky, or was Tsunade directly targeting him?

It had to be the latter.

No doubt about it.

After all, he was still Tsunade's teacher—she wouldn't treat him like that.

Danzo, still seething, turned to Hiruzen and growled, "Hiruzen, are you satisfied now? Is this your so-called excellent student? Does she even acknowledge my authority as the Hokage's advisor?!"

"Oh, please."

Hiruzen leisurely took a pinch of tobacco and lit his pipe with a flicker of chakra.

Taking a few puffs, he exhaled and sat down on the sofa, looking at Danzo.

"We both know the truth."

"This time, you brought it on yourself. No matter how upset you are, you have to deal with it."

"You should be glad Tsunade has no proof yet. If she did... well..."

Ignoring Danzo's grim expression, Hiruzen shook his head and warned, "One last time, Danzo—stop. The Wood Release experiments won't work. We proved that long ago."

"Don't be stubborn."

"Return the First Hokage's remains, and I'll pretend none of this happened."

Even if Danzo succeeded, Hiruzen wouldn't allow it.

A Danzo with Wood Release? That would be a nightmare.

He couldn't risk losing control over him.
