Chapter 67: Ch 67 : Friend
In the Hokage's office, Makoto glanced at the documents in his hand, then looked at the middle-aged man standing before him.
The green bodysuit he was wearing was particularly eye-catching.
"You're Might Duy, right?"
"Yes, Lord Makoto," the man smiled, revealing two rows of white teeth, his thick eyebrows twitching.
Makoto felt a bit speechless.
Facing such a peculiar person, he felt his sense of aesthetics resisting the man before him.
The man's profile was quite simple—he was still a genin, with no talents aside from his taijutsu.
He had participated in several Chunin exams when he was younger, but his lack of versatility had caused him to be eliminated each time.
Makoto asked, "You want to apply for a B-rank mission. Do you have teammates?"
Might Duy, with his honest smile, replied,
"Not yet. I was hoping Lord Makoto could help me recommend someone."
A B-rank mission, which typically involves the expectation of potential combat with enemy ninjas, can vary in difficulty.
The enemy ninjas may range from rogue ninjas to more renowned ones.
These missions are generally led by experienced chunin, and to undertake them solo, one must be at least a Jonin.
Might Duy's record was filled with lower-ranked tasks, like acting as labor or searching for lost items—rarely ever even reaching C-rank.
Makoto asked again, "What did the mission office say?"
Might Duy scratched his head, "They said I just need to find a teammate."
Makoto immediately understood—this person must have been unable to find a teammate, so he came to him instead.
"Why do you want to take on a B-rank mission?"
"Nothing special, just want to earn more money."
Makoto opened a drawer, pulled out a file directory, and carefully flipped through it for a while.
Suddenly, he found a suitable candidate.
He then checked the recent mission list again.
"This is an intelligence-gathering mission. Do you think you can handle it?"
Might Duy immediately became alert at the mention of it.
"I will do my best!"
Makoto sighed, "Just don't wear that outfit while you're on the mission. You'll definitely get noticed."
Might Duy, hearing this, smiled a bit awkwardly and said he understood.
Makoto then took out a blank sheet of paper, wrote something on it, stamped it, and handed the paper along with a file to Might Duy.
"Go find this person. You two will form a team to carry out the mission."
"We... are we both Genin?"
Might Duy took the papers, and his expression immediately became conflicted.
"Maruboshi Kosuke... a Genin?"
Makoto waved his hand, signaling him to leave.
Might Duy felt uneasy in his heart, thinking, How can this boy, who's about the same age as my son, be assigned to me as a genin teammate? This is too unreliable.
Well, if he's a Genin, then he's a genin...
As long as it's a mission, I'll do my best to complete it!
With this thought in mind, Might Duy left the office with renewed excitement.
Not long after Might Duy left, another boy who looked quite similar to him in appearance and dress entered the office.
Makoto felt helpless upon seeing him.
First, the father, and now the son.
"Makoto, please let me join the Anbu!"
Might Guy shouted excitedly as soon as he entered.
Makoto : "..."
His father at least knew to address me as 'lord', but this kid dares to call me by my name?
Makoto couldn't help but rub his forehead.
"Why... do you have this idea?"
Might Guy said passionately, "Kakashi is my destined rival! He's joined the Anbu, how can I fall behind him?!"
Makoto didn't expect to encounter such a scene.
He finally replied, "The Anbu isn't suitable for you. You'd be better off thinking about how to become a jonin."
Might Guy, however, was persistent and said, "Makoto, I will try my best!"
Makoto sighed and said, "Go take a look at who's standing at the door."
Might Guy froze at the words, then quickly ran to the office door and observed the Anbu member on duty.
He exclaimed, "This person looks like Kakashi!"
Kakashi: "..."
Might Guy stood there for a moment, then suddenly shouted,
"You must be Kakashi, right?!"
Kakashi couldn't help but mutter under his breath, "Idiot."
"it's really Kakashi!"
Might Guy became even more excited and quickly ran up to Makoto :
"Makoto, please let me join the Anbu!"
Makoto then said,
"You couldn't even notice such obvious features of Kakashi, and you don't even have the basic observational skills.
The Anbu often conducts covert intelligence missions, but in your case, your proficiency in techniques like the Three Body Technique is only barely passing.
Do you think you're capable? The Anbu is an elite group of ninjas.
Even a Chunin needs to go through rigorous screening to join."
Might Guy stood there, speechless.
Outside, Kakashi quietly listened to their conversation.
He thought Might Guy's actions were reckless and foolish, but after hearing about him joining the Anbu last night, he had also developed an interest in joining.
Might Guy seemed a little disappointed, as the gap between him and Kakashi in Makoto's words felt enormous.
Makoto looked at the boy with thick eyebrows, thought for a moment, and then said, "If you can beat Kakashi, I might consider it."
Might Guy immediately became energized at these words: "I will definitely do it!"
Makoto then called out, "Kakashi."
Kakashi, dressed in full Anbu attire and wearing his mask, walked in and stood coolly to the side.
"You heard everything."
"Mm," Kakashi responded briefly.
Makoto said, "I'll give you half a day off. Just let me know the result later."
Kakashi walked out of the Hokage Building with Guy, his mask now removed and dressed in a sharp vest.
Guy, brimming with confidence, smiled widely:
"Kakashi, let's begin our duel! This is a battle of youthful passion!"
Kakashi responded indifferently, perhaps already used to it.
He glanced at the sky and, seeing that it was still early, said,
"Let's go eat something."
Guy paused for a moment, then quickly followed Kakashi:
"Why do we suddenly need to eat? Are you hungry?"
"Mm, my stomach's empty. Can't unleash my full power without food."
"Alright then, Kakashi, you have to eat more!"
"Too much food and intense exercise will make you throw up."
"Then eat more, but just a little less."
The two walked down the street together, with Guy chattering loudly and excitedly around Kakashi.
Makoto stood by the office's floor-to-ceiling window, quietly watching their figures fade into the distance, feeling inexplicably sentimental.
He didn't even have a single friend...
He glanced at the mountain of paperwork on his desk, suddenly feeling very frustrated.
In the evening, Kakashi returned and, seeing Makoto reclining in the chair, swaying back and forth, was momentarily taken aback.
He asked, "Aren't you off work yet?"
Makoto responded, "If you think I'm off work, why are you still looking for me here?"
Kakashi replied, "I thought maybe you hadn't finished yet."
Makoto simply smiled faintly in response.
Kakashi fell silent for a moment, then said, "Guy won."
Makoto replied calmly, "I don't believe it."
"..."
Seeing that his lie had been exposed, Kakashi didn't try to argue.
He said, "Guy is very talented. You should consider it."
Makoto asked, "In what way?"
Kakashi thought back to the fight with Guy.
In the dusk, Guy had been knocked down by him countless times, yet still struggled to get back up.
He had also told Guy that the Anbu wasn't the place for him and that with such perseverance, he was heading in the wrong direction.
"He's very talented."
"I'll consider it. You can go now."
Kakashi nodded, turned, and left the office.
Just as he reached the door, he glanced back into the room.
The empty room only had Makoto sitting there alone.
The desk was already cleared, and the official business was likely finished.
Is he still waiting for me…?
Kakashi wondered, uncertain.
