Chapter 54: Ch 54 : Fall short

When Orochimaru, led by Obito, arrived at the hiding place of Uchiha Madara, they found nothing.

The cave was empty, but there were traces of someone having lived there, such as robes and weapons hanging on the walls.

Orochimaru surveyed the area and realized he was too late—the person had already sensed something was wrong and had fled.

He found a pool of blood on a stone chair, along with three dried tubes resembling the White Zetsu's constitution.

At the other end of the tubes was a large pit, which was dark and empty.

Orochimaru released two snakes to scout the area.

Near the pit, a few White Zetsu bodies were discarded.

Unlike the ones Orochimaru had killed, these White Zetsu seemed to have been drained of their flesh and blood, leaving only their outer skin, which was terrifying.

"I remember, there was a strange plant here," Obito said from behind.

"What kind of plant?"

"I think it was called the Outer Path: Secret Technique... Those White Zetsu were created from that plant."

So it's called White Zetsu...

Orochimaru thought to himself.

Not long after, the two snakes returned from the deep pit and slithered up to Orochimaru's shoulder, flicking their tongues.

"What a pity," Orochimaru muttered.

He turned his gaze to the empty shells of the White Zetsu on the ground, his eyes sweeping across the cave.

"But it doesn't matter, the unknown is what makes it interesting," he seemed to be speaking to the snakes on his shoulders, or perhaps to himself.

Obito stood in front of the stone chair, staring at the bloodstains and the tubes.

He remembered Madara telling him that if the Outer Path: Secret Technique didn't provide Madara with chakra, Madara would have died immediately.

Could Madara have already died...?

Orochimaru stayed in the cave for a long time and actually found some useful things, which excited him greatly.

He found the cells of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, as well as some related materials.

In addition, he discovered several pairs of damaged eyeballs.

Upon further examination of the documents, he realized they were Sharingan from the Uchiha clan.

After a thorough check, Orochimaru confirmed that they were indeed damaged, but even so, he treasured them greatly.

He carefully sealed them in a scroll, which was then swallowed by one of his snakes.

After spending so much time in the dim cave, when he stepped outside, the sky had already darkened.

The Anbu were waiting outside, and upon seeing Orochimaru and Obito emerge, they immediately approached.

"Lord Hokage!"

"Take everything we can back to the village," Orochimaru ordered.

Obito, still looking lost and dejected, stood by in silence.

The group then left.

Obito asked Orochimaru where Rin and Kakashi were, but now that everything was done, Orochimaru had no intention of dealing with it further.

Obito, however, kept insisting on meeting them, which annoyed Orochimaru, who considered knocking him out and taking him back to the village for research in the lab.

But this guy was from the Uchiha clan, and Orochimaru still wanted to observe the effects of Madara's body techniques on him.

After some thought, Orochimaru decided that as the Hokage, visiting the front lines to check on everyone wouldn't be unreasonable.

He immediately changed direction and headed to the eastern camp of the Land of Fire, instructing the accompanying Anbu to send the items retrieved from the cave back to the village.

Upon hearing that the Fourth Hokage had arrived, Shikaku and Minato, along with all the ninjas in the camp, came out to welcome him.

"Greetings, Lord Hokage!"

Everyone in front of them knelt to the ground.

Most of the people here had not attended Orochimaru's succession ceremony, so this was their first time seeing the new Hokage, and they made sure to show the proper respect.

Orochimaru, kneeling before Minato, smiled faintly and spoke,

"No need for formalities. Please, rise. It's been a long time, Minato. You've worked hard on the front lines."

Minato lowered his head and responded, "For the village, it's nothing."

Orochimaru then said directly, "I brought you a gift."

Minato looked puzzled, and at that moment, a small figure stepped out from behind Orochimaru.

He was dressed in a black cloak, and a large hood obscured most of his face.

Minato felt that the figure seemed somewhat familiar.

The person in the black cloak lifted his hood, revealing a smiling face. "Minato-sensei!"

"O... Obito?"

At the same time, a figure from the crowd swiftly darted forward, standing in front of Minato.

"Kakashi, huh? The new look suits you," Obito greeted them, clearly pleased as he greeted them both, seeing their incredulous expressions.

He had imagined that after such a long separation, their reunion would be full of emotion, with the two of them embracing each other excitedly, but that seemed too melodramatic.

Neither he nor Kakashi were the type for that...

But just as the thought passed through his mind, Kakashi suddenly lunged at him.

"Ah! Ouch, ouch, ouch! I still have wounds! Kakashi, you're going to strangle me! I can't breathe! Hah... hah..."

Obito screamed in pain as Kakashi's arms tightened around him.

Minato, witnessing this scene, felt his excitement slowly calm, and he let out a faint smile.

Minato then looked toward Orochimaru and asked, "Lord Hokage, what is going on with Obito?"

Orochimaru said, "It's too complicated to explain right now. Let Obito tell you all about it later."

He knew that Obito would likely listen to Minato, and when the time came, Obito would surely tell his teacher everything, both what should and shouldn't be said.

Orochimaru hadn't originally planned to hide the matter, and it didn't matter even if Minato found out.

"Obito, your arm..." Kakashi suddenly spoke.

Obito casually replied, "It was crushed by a rock, nothing serious."

Kakashi fell silent, looking at Obito's closed left eye and the scarred right side of his face, feeling a deep sense of guilt.

Obito, however, couldn't wait to ask, "Kakashi, Minato-sensei, where is Rin?"

Minato pondered for a moment. "Rin..."

He then turned to Orochimaru and said,

"I was just about to discuss Rin's situation with Lord Hokage.

Let's go check on her first."

Everyone dispersed, and Orochimaru, Minato, Shikaku, Kakashi, and Obito entered a tent within the camp.

"Rin!" Obito exclaimed as he saw the scene before him, trying to approach, but Kakashi held him back.

Inside the tent, there was a sealing formation carved into the ground.

Rin sat in the center of the formation with her eyes closed, surrounded by four ninjas who were performing a technique.

"What happened to Rin?" Obito asked anxiously.

Kakashi explained what had happened to them—from Rin being captured by the Kiri-nin and turned into the Three-Tails' Jinchuriki, to how Minato had arrived to save them and placed the Four Symbols Seal on Rin to suppress the Tailed Beast before bringing her back to the camp.

"The Tailed Beast issue is easy to handle.

However, I discovered that there is a cursed seal placed on Rin by the enemy, and it hasn't been removed.

These individuals are all experts in sealing techniques from the camp, and they've been working with me to try and remove the curse, but there has been no progress so far." Minato said.

Orochimaru was somewhat surprised: "Minato, even you can't remove this technique?"

Minato's sealing techniques were inherited from the Uzumaki, a village famous for its sealing jutsu, and his skills in the art were exceptional.

Minato pondered and said, "The chakra from the cursed seal was too strong when it was applied, and it's connected to the Tailed Beast's chakra. The Three-Tails continuously supplies chakra to it, making it impossible for me to deal with it."

Converting the chakra of a Tailed Beast for one's own use was something that could be done with sealing techniques.

For example, Kushina's dual Four Symbols Seal, which formed the Eight Trigrams Seal, could convert the chakra leaking from the Nine-Tails into her own chakra.

Orochimaru nodded and said, "Let's send her back to the village. I'll find a way."

This was the Three-Tails' Jinchuriki, and in the future, it would be managed by Konoha.

Orochimaru thought it was quite interesting.

It was truly a strategy.

Although it was an unexpected stroke of luck, the result was still the same.

In Orochimaru's eyes, this was nothing short of a blessing.

Obito couldn't help but speak up from the side, "Lord Hokage, you must save Rin!"

Minato reassured him, "Rin is fine. This cursed seal won't harm her, we just don't know its exact purpose yet."

Orochimaru smiled faintly, "Don't worry, I'm the Hokage. How could I abandon a comrade from my own village?"
