Chapter 7: Journey To The West
Senju Miyuki accepted the condiments handed over by Uzumaki Nami and left with a satisfied smile.
Uzumaki Ryusei escorted Akimichi Shou and Nara Yuki back to their homes. He informed their parents that the two would be staying for dinner at his house for a while. Their parents readily agreed and offered food money. Ryusei did not decline and headed home after bidding them farewell.
Upon returning, Ryusei handed the money to Nami. "This is the food allowance from Shou and Yuki's parents," he said.
Nami frowned slightly. "Why bother taking it? We don't need that little bit of money."
Uzumaki Shuichi, their father, chimed in, "Take it. If we refuse, their parents might hesitate to let them visit often."
After a brief pause, Nami nodded and accepted the money. Ryusei wished his parents good night and went to his room.
Sitting at his desk, Ryusei took out a stack of manuscript paper. Although he had long-term plans to start a hotel business, who knew when Hashirama-sama would return to help establish it? For now, he decided to write a novel to earn some extra income.
"What should I write about?" Ryusei muttered to himself. His previous life had been filled with countless books, but the ones that left the deepest impression were the Four Great Classical Novels.
"Dream of the Red Chamber" wouldn't resonate in the shinobi world, and while Romance of the Three Kingdoms had unparalleled wisdom and intrigue, it relied too heavily on historical references—unlikely to appeal to the general populace here. That left Journey to the West and Investiture of the Gods. After some thought, Ryusei decided on Journey to the West. After all, elements from that story—such as Sun Wukong and the Ruyi Jingu Bang—had already influenced shinobi culture. The familiarity would make it more engaging.
He spread out his manuscript paper and began writing, starting with the iconic introduction:
"Chapter 1: The Monkey is Born.
Chaos undivided; the heavens and earth unformed, an expanse of indistinct primordial energy. Then came Pangu, who shattered the void and divided the pure from the impure, giving rise to all creation. If one seeks the origin of existence, one must read Journey to the West.
Long ago, the world was divided into four continents: Dongsheng Shenzhou, Xiniu Hezhou, Nanfang Buzhou, and Beiju Luzhou. In the Dongsheng Shenzhou region lay the Kingdom of Ao Lai, home to Mount Huaguo. Atop this mountain stood a mystical stone that one day split open, giving birth to a stone monkey. The monkey grew swiftly, its eyes radiating golden light that pierced the heavens, alarming even the celestial realm…*
Two hours later, Ryusei set down his brush, having reached the part where Sun Wukong disrupted the Peach Banquet and fled to the mortal realm. The thought of shinobi experiencing the thrill of serialized storytelling made him chuckle.
After refining his chakra a few times to soothe his body, he fell asleep.
The Next Day
Ryusei was training in the woods when Akimichi Shou and Nara Yuki came running, their hands clutching the manuscript he'd written. They were engrossed in the story.
Shou eagerly approached him. "Brother Ryusei, what happens next? Did Sun Wukong get captured by the celestial army?"
Ryusei smiled slyly. "I haven't decided yet. What do you think?"
Shou jumped up, brandishing a stick as if it were a staff. "Sun Wukong is the Monkey King—there's no way they'll catch him! He's too strong!"
Watching Shou mimic martial stances, Ryusei felt reassured that Journey to the West could captivate even the shinobi world.
While Yuki shared Shou's excitement, she was more composed. Ryusei noted to himself that while the story had broad appeal, romance novels might still resonate more with girls like Yuki.
He reminded them, "I'm submitting this manuscript, so don't tell anyone I wrote it—not even your parents."
"We understand!" the two friends chorused.
Later that day, Ryusei disguised himself using the Transformation Jutsu, adopting the appearance of a stern, middle-aged man wearing a Konoha forehead protector. Carrying his manuscript, he entered a prominent bookstore in the village.
The shopkeeper greeted him cautiously. "Welcome, sir. How may I assist you?"
Ryusei placed the manuscript on the counter. "I've written a book. Take a look."
Suspicious, the shopkeeper assumed Ryusei was there to extort money. Nonetheless, he opened the manuscript, intending to skim it dismissively. To his surprise, he was quickly drawn into the tale.
Half an hour later, the shopkeeper slammed the counter, exclaiming, "Incredible!" Realizing his outburst had startled customers, he hurriedly ushered Ryusei into a private room.
Inside, the shopkeeper introduced himself as Yagyu Kuraaki. "Sir, this manuscript is extraordinary. May I ask your name?"
Ryusei hesitated before replying, "Miyamoto Musashi."
Yagyu smiled knowingly. "Mr. Miyamoto, how would you like to proceed? We can either buy the rights outright or share profits."
Ryusei listened as Yagyu explained the terms: a buyout of 500,000 ryo or 30% of the profits. After some thought, Ryusei chose profit-sharing.
Before leaving, Yagyu emphasized the importance of regular updates to maintain interest. Ryusei assured him he'd deliver quality work on schedule.
Back in the forest, Shou and Yuki eagerly awaited him. "How did it go, Brother Ryusei?"
Ryusei smiled and showed them the signed contract. "We'll have money coming in next month!"
As the trio celebrated, Ryusei reminded them, "Let's not get too carried away. We still need to train hard to achieve our dreams."
Together, they resumed their exercises, determined to create a brighter future.
