Chapter 19: Partial Dharma, Heaven and Earth
Nara Shikamoto stepped out of the office, his calm voice cutting through the commotion: "What's all the noise about?" His sharp gaze fell on Yamashita Shou, who stood out in overly flashy attire. "You're seriously wearing that for today's practical exam?"
Yamashita Shou grinned confidently and retrieved an iron staff strapped to his back. Striking a pose reminiscent of Sun Wukong battling demons, he said, "This is Sun Wukong's battle armor! Cool, isn't it?"
Nara Shikamoto raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on the two flamboyant feathers atop Shou's head. "You'll see just how useful it is during combat. By the way, you failed the theoretical exam yesterday. After today's test, report to the classroom and copy the exam paper ten times. You're not leaving until it's done."
"Ah…!" Yamashita Shou groaned, his excitement deflating. His classmates chuckled, clearly entertained by his plight.
The first part of the practical exam was shuriken throwing. Nara Shikamoto called out, "Yamashita Shou, you're up first."
Yamashita quickly hurled ten shurikens, but only three hit the targets.
"Three hits, seven misses—failed. Next, Uchiha Kagami."
Uchiha Kagami approached calmly. Unlike the dramatic precision techniques of Uchiha legends like Sasuke, he performed a basic yet flawless throw. All ten shurikens hit the bullseye.
"Perfect score—excellent," Shikamoto announced.
One by one, the students took their turns. Sarutobi Hiruzen and Shimura Danzo scored nine bullseyes each. Yamamoto Ryusei and Hyūga Natsuki followed closely with eight. Most of the other students hit between four and seven bullseyes, while Yuuki managed seven hits but missed one. Only Yamashita Shou failed.
Nara Shikamoto gathered the students at the sparring field. "Now for the final part: the combat test. First match—Uchiha Kagami versus Sarutobi Hiruzen."
As the two took their positions, the spectators erupted into cheers.
"Kagami, crush that monkey!" someone called out, referencing Hiruzen's wiry frame and notably dexterous hands.
Another voice chimed in, "Kagami, you're the coolest! You've got this!"
Standing between them, Shikamoto explained the rules. "Use any technique you wish, but remember, this is not to the death. You may concede at any point. Ready? Begin!"
Kagami immediately hurled several kunai and shurikens at Hiruzen. The projectiles collided midair and changed trajectory, an iconic display of Uchiha precision. Hiruzen deflected them one by one with his kunai.
As the distance closed, Kagami launched a flurry of taijutsu attacks. They exchanged blows with equal intensity until Kagami's eyes turned crimson, revealing the single tomoe Sharingan.
"Hiruzen, I can see all your movements. This is my win," Kagami declared, pressing his advantage with relentless attacks.
Hiruzen, though driven back, fought valiantly. Wounded but determined, he used a kunai slash to force Kagami back. He then formed hand seals, yelling, "Water Release: Wild Water Wave!" A torrent of water surged toward Kagami.
"Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall!" Kagami slammed his hands into the ground, summoning a solid earthen barrier to block the water. Before the dust settled, Hiruzen's voice rang out from above.
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
A fierce gale struck Kagami, grazing him and leaving a shallow wound. The impact revealed a substitution jutsu—Kagami had replaced himself with a wooden log.
From behind the veil of mist, Kagami countered with a booming, "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!" A massive fireball blazed toward Hiruzen.
Hiruzen quickly formed seals. "Water Release: Water Whip!" He lashed out with a stream of water, colliding with the fireball in a thunderous explosion. Steam shrouded the arena as students dodged stray flames and splashes.
Within the mist, Kagami's Sharingan pinpointed Hiruzen's location. A kunai pressed against Hiruzen's neck from behind.
"I win," Kagami said confidently.
Hiruzen sighed. "You got me. I concede."
"The winner: Uchiha Kagami!" Shikamoto announced, as cheers erupted.
Next, it was Shimura Danzo versus Yamamoto Ryusei. Girls in the crowd screamed excitedly.
"Danzo's so handsome! Don't let us down!"
Ryusei, a head taller than his peers and with a muscular physique honed by secret chakra-strengthening techniques, cracked his knuckles. Only one voice stood out cheering for him—Yuuki Komiya.
"Ryusei, you've got this!" she shouted.
The match began with Danzo leaping back to maintain distance. He formed seals and unleashed "Wind Release: Gale Palm," sending sharp wind currents toward Ryusei.
Ryusei countered with "Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall," raising a sturdy barrier. He then hurled shurikens over the wall, forcing Danzo to dodge. As Danzo maintained his ranged attacks, Ryusei realized the strategy.
'If he keeps flying a kite like this, I'll lose,' Ryusei thought. He formed hand seals for "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique."
Danzo retaliated with "Wind Release: Thousand Faces Gale," scattering the fireball into embers. But Ryusei seized the opportunity, vanishing with a swift body flicker and appearing before Danzo. His punch landed squarely on Danzo's stomach, folding him like a shrimp.
The crowd gasped in silence as Danzo collapsed. Shikamoto hesitated for a moment before announcing, "The winner: Yamamoto Ryusei!"
Danzo's supporters glared at Ryusei as they helped their fallen hero off the stage.
