9: Recommended Coffee-02
“By the way, is just coffee enough? I thought you’d order dessert too.”
“If it were a day off, that would be fine, but not today. Besides, I can’t waste too much money.”
“Huh, so that’s how it is… Even Kamidama thinks about things like that.”
“What do you mean? I’m just a normal high school girl!”
“Yeah, I get that.”
Indeed, I understood. Despite being the school idol and having a crazy side, Kamidama Kagari was fundamentally a normal high school girl. I hadn’t heard any rumors about her living in a wealthy family or working as a model.
Of course, I never asked her directly, but if she did, it would surely be a well-known rumor.
“Also, since you only had sweet bread for lunch, Uraku, you need to have a proper dinner. So, I can’t order cake.”
“Are you my mom or something? And how do you know I had sweet bread for lunch…?”
“Oh, it was true? Geez, you’re really the same as always.”
“Damn it, you’re picking up past life signals again!”
But this time, it might be my fault for letting my guard down. Still, a two-stage punch of guessing and past life talk is unfair. It’s an unavoidable, invincible attack.
It’s unfair! Kick out the cheater! As I was thinking this, the very polite-looking owner brought us two cups of coffee. The owner, a monocle-wearing old man, stared at me for a few seconds, making me a bit uneasy.
What was that? What the heck was that just now?
Scary. What’s even scarier is that Kamidama has been staring at me like that too today.
What if that old man starts talking about past lives too…?
That would be such a scary experience that I might faint.
To calm my rattled nerves, I took a sip of coffee.
The black liquid was exactly what it appeared to be, hitting me with a solid bitterness.
“Ah… I see. Hey, Kamidama. Where’s the sugar? And I need milk too. Give me all you’ve got.”
“Oh dear, I like it, but maybe it’s a bit too much for little Uraku?”
“What? I’m just joking! I can drink coffee without anything in it!”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Here’s the sugar. Let’s add a lot.”
“D-damn it…”
And so began the battle to stop Kamidama from adding sugar to my coffee.
I kept insisting I didn’t need it!
“I’m just joking… Sure, it’s bitter. But somehow, I want to drink it without anything. It must be better that way.”
Though it was an honest statement, Kamidama stopped in her tracks, looking surprised.
Does she think I’m some kind of elementary school kid…?
I can drink it without preparation, and this coffee is actually quite good. If Kamidama recommended it, I’d like it, I thought, ready to argue, but Kamidama sighed and smiled brightly.
“I really do like you.”
“Don’t confess out of nowhere! See, you made me spill a bit!”
Gripping his cup to prevent Kamidama from adding sugar, Nagiura Uraku made Kamidama Kagari smile despite herself.
“What’s wrong? Can’t you drink coffee? You’re more like a little girl than a young lady.”
“I can drink it! It just takes me a little longer, that’s all!”
“It’s fine. No need to force yourself.”
“I’m not forcing myself!”
After school activities often took unexpected turns. Instead of just hanging out at school, we often wandered the town.
This café had been around since those days—a place of memories for Kamidama Kagari.
“Seriously, it’s fine. You might not know, but things taste better when you enjoy them.”
“Stop calling me ‘little girl.’ I told you not to call me ‘young lady’ too, right?”
“Alright, alright. My bad. Just stop glaring at me. It’s scary; see, my hands are shaking.”
Adding sugar and milk to her cup, he chuckled softly.
“Actually, I like sweet things too.”
“Then why don’t you add sugar?” she asked.
“Well, it’s true, but somehow this coffee tastes best as is. So I think I’m drinking it the best way.”
“I think your way of saying things is unfair, senpai.”
People are just the right amount of unfair, he laughed, and the boy in front of her overlapped with that image.
Oh, you really are you. The person I love.
Unable to contain her emotions, Kamidama let some of them spill out in words.
“I really do like you.”
Well, because of that, he ended up spilling some coffee.
