Chapter 12: A Mother's Scheme
Eleanor stormed into the manor, her face burning with anger and humiliation from the encounter with Nathaniel. Nathaniel must have thought so low of her to ask her to marry him. She might have desired him previously but that was because he was with Zephyrine then.
She found her mother, Sapphire in the garden sipping tea with an air of Repose.
"Mother, you won't believe what Nathaniel asked me," Eleanor's voice said as her voice trembled with rage.
"Mother, you won't believe what Nathaniel just asked me," Eleanor said, her voice trembling with rage.
Sapphire raised an eyebrow, her green piercing eyes sparkling with curiosity. She set her cup down, her slender fingers against the armrest. She couldn't wait to hear what the fool Nathaniel asked her daughter to do.
"Try me," Sapphire said, her voice dripping with curiosity.
Eleanor paced around the garden, her high heels clicking on the stone pavement. "He wants me to marry him! Can you believe it? After several times I begged him to do so, now he thinks I'll settle for him?"
Since when Eleanor got to know that Nathaniel and Zephyrine were together she had always desired him. It moved her to pleading with him countless times to marry her so that it would destroy Zephyrine and that way she would lose her mind then Grandpa Cloutier would desist from making her the president.
But since the plan changed, Nathaniel is so useless to her now.
Sapphire's expression remained calm but a hint of disdain flashed in her eyes. She was really trying to stop herself from smiling at his unreasonable request. She leaned back in her chair, pressing together her fingers.
"That fool. Does he think he can tie you down? You're worth much more than a pathetic man like Nathaniel."
As long as Nathaniel was concerned, Sapphire was so sure that her situation was better than his. So he wouldn't dare lay a hand or try to use his connection against them.
Eleanor stopped pacing and faced her mother, her eyes blazing with determination.
"I told him to forget the idea, but it seems like he has something he is chasing after by marrying him."
Sapphire looked displeased with her daughter's words. She sounded like he threatened her and she fell for it. She never imagined her daughter as a dull person but she is really acting like one. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got so she moved her thoughts from it and her gaze turned calculating again. She had been trying to organize her plan while Eleanor was away, and she was thinking of postponing it but it seems the plan has changed again.
"Eleanor, I have a plan. You'll soon have someone far better than Nathaniel." Sapphire's voice was firm and her gaze showed that she was confident in her plan.
Eleanor was also curious to know about her mother's plan but it would just spoil the plan. If a situation arises it would make it easier for her to act innocent since she didn't know anything about the plan beforehand.
Eleanor's curiosity was piqued, she might not be interested in knowing the plan but she wanted to know who it was at least. What if it was someone she didn't desire?
She walked closer to her mother, "Who, mum?"
Sapphire's smile sent a shiver down Eleanor's spine. Eleanor knows what that smile means, something tricky.
"Kendrick Desjardins. He's wealthy, powerful, and currently tied to that inspired fool Zephyrine."
Sapphire's voice was reduced to a very low tone, as the popular saying the wall has ears and she had quite a lot of enemies in the manor. So she shouldn't take the risk, the old might just be right at the corner or his loyal servants. So prevention is better than cure.
Sapphire's mind whirled with schemes, her hatred for Zephyrine was burning brighter with each passing day. The young lady stole everything from us, the company, the wealth, the man who was supposed to be Eleanor but she is always acting innocent. But very soon, all will end and it will be the end of her story as well.
"But mother, she's my step-sister," Eleanor's voice was laced with hesitation.
Sapphire gritted her teeth in frustration. Eleanor never hesitates to frustrate her. Her voice dripped with chill and venom, "Aren't you tired of being the unwanted child? She stole everything that is yours but she didn't stop at that. Her mother also didn't leave my husband. You should be proud that you are doing something right for once. Nathaniel was once hers, but now he's desperate to marry you. Surely something must be behind it but if we are one step ahead of him, it's not a bad thing. So wake up and be wise."
Mother's right, Zephyrine doesn't deserve any of it. I'll do whatever it takes to reclaim what's mine. My life and everything. As if a knot in her head had been retied, her eyes sparkled with understanding. "You want me to seduce Kendrick and—"
Sapphire nodded her eyes glinting with malice. Her daughter was finally doing what she expected her to do after a long time.
"Not just seduce, I want Zephyrine out of the picture permanently. You'll be the one to take her place."
The hair on Eleanor's body rose as she contemplated the gravity of her mother's words. But her desire for revenge overrode any moral doubt.
"I'll do it, mom. For us, for our family honor." Sapphire had eventually succeeded in manipulating her thoughts.
Sapphire's smile grew wider, her eyes gleaming with triumph.
"Excellent. Now, let's begin our plan. We'll make Jiang Jun Jie yours, and Zephyrine will pay for stealing what's rightfully ours."
As they sipped their tea, the mother-daughter duo wove a deadly web of deceit and revenge.
