Chapter 13: Chapter 13

A chorus of honking horns filled the air as they hit heavy traffic. Jackson drummed his fingers against his knee, exhaling sharply. Beside him, Uta let her head fall back against the seat with a groan.

Then, a spark of mischief flickered across Jackson's face. "Screw this. Let's ditch the car and go on foot."

Uta lifted her head, her frustration melting into excitement. A slow grin spread across her face. "Hell yeah!"

they flung open the doors and bolted into the crowded streets, laughter trailing behind them as they weaved through the city, leaving the gridlocked car behind.

With a burst of speed, Jackson propelled himself onto the rooftops, his movements swift and effortless. Uta followed close behind, channeling her Haki to keep pace. Together, they raced across the city skyline, the world below blurring as they embraced the thrill of freedom.

"Help! Someone, help!"

The desperate cry rang through the night, making Jackson and Uta exchange a glance before they sprinted toward the sound. They reached the alley's mouth and stopped dead in their tracks. A dozen men stood there, looming over a child, their shadows stretching ominously across the pavement as they attempted to drag her away.

Jackson's body tensed, his quirk flaring to life as he took a step forward to intervene—but suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his chest. His vision swam, and he collapsed to one knee, his hand instinctively clutching at his heart, teeth clenched against the intense wave of agony.

"Jack!" Uta's voice sliced through the fog of pain clouding his mind.

Her eyes hardened with determination, and she drew in a breath, releasing a powerful note that rang through the air. The world seemed to vibrate as purple energy spiraled around the alley, forming into chains of sound. The criminals howled in shock as the chains lashed out, ensnaring them. One by one, they were yanked off their feet, their bodies crashing into the nearby trash cans with a thundering impact. The cans snapped shut, trapping the men inside, the girl now safe.

Uta approached, her gaze lingering on the child before softening. "You're safe now. Go home, okay?"

The girl nodded, gratitude shining in her eyes. "Thank you!" She dashed off, disappearing around the corner.

Uta's focus shifted to Jackson, her expression knowing. "You're drained, huh?"

Jackson exhaled, his shoulders sagging. "Yeah. It'll take about a week to fully recharge, maybe less with the arc reactor."

Before they could leave, red and blue lights flashed at the end of the alley. Police cars rolled up, and officers stepped out, their postures relaxed as they took in the scene.

One officer whistled, walking over to the trash cans. "Well, would you look at that?" He popped the lid off one can, revealing a criminal wedged inside, groaning miserably. "Nice and tidy.

Another officer chuckled as he and his partner hauled a thug out of another can, the criminal's limbs tangled in chains that shimmered before dissolving into thin air. "Uta's handiwork, huh?" He tipped his hat to her. "You've got some talent."

Uta smiled sheepishly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Just keeping the streets safe."

The officers exchanged knowing looks. "And giving us good stories for the station," one of them teased. "Bet the guys will get a kick out of this one."

Cheers erupted from the crowd, excitement buzzing as someone shouted, "It's Uta! The Japanese artist!" Cameras flashed, fans waving eagerly.

Uta's cheeks flushed pink, her smile shy as she gave a quick wave. Leaning closer to Jackson, she whispered, "Let's skedaddle."

Before the crowd could close in, they darted away, weaving through the streets until they found a quieter spot. Jackson's stomach growled loudly, breaking the silence.

Uta glanced over, amusement dancing in her eyes. "Hungry?"

"Starving," Jackson admitted. "How about McDonald's?"

She grinned. "Sounds good. Let's just hope we don't get mobbed again."

With that, they hurried off, the echoes of cheers fading behind them.

Jackson and Uta walked side by side, their fingers so close they almost touched, but never quite did. As they stepped into McDonald's, the warm smell of fries and burgers surrounded them.

Jackson moved to the self-ordering kiosk, his fingers tapping quickly on the screen as he selected five combo meals. He paused, glancing back at Uta. "What about you?"

Uta's eyes scanned the menu before she answered, "Three combos. Makes sense, right? Our quirks burn a lot of energy."

Jackson grinned. "Yeah, we'll need it." He added her order, their combined trays promising enough food to fuel a small army.

They ate in comfortable silence, quickly devouring their meals. Suddenly, Jackson's phone buzzed on the table. He picked it up, glancing at the screen.

"Who is it?" Uta asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin.

"My mom. She's FaceTiming me," Jackson replied, his thumb hovering over the screen.

Before he could answer, Uta's eyes sparkled mischievously. In a flash, she snatched the phone from his hand. "Ooh, let me say hi!"

She accepted the call, her face lighting up. "Hi, Mrs. Rogers!"

"Uta!" Mrs. Rogers' voice was warm with excitement. "It's so good to see you! How have you been?"

"I've been great! I'm here with Jacky. We're just grabbing a bite to eat," Uta said, smiling brightly.

Jackson waved sheepishly from the side, but his mom's eyes narrowed, her lips curving into a sly grin. "Oh? You two are out eating together… Is this a date?"

Both of them froze, faces turning bright red.

"N-no! It's not like that!" Jackson stammered, reaching for his phone. "Mom, we'll talk later!"

Jackson's fingers moved fast, snatching the phone from Uta's grasp. The call ended with a sharp tap, his eyes wide with embarrassment. Uta's mouth hung open for a second, her cheeks tinged pink, before laughter spilled out of her, light and teasing.

He opened his mouth to protest, but a piercing scream cut through the air. His head whipped toward the window. Headlights blazed, growing larger by the second—a car hurtling straight at them.

His body moved on its own. He lunged, wrapping himself around Uta as glass shattered, metal twisted, and the deafening crash swallowed everything.
