Chapter 21: Beginning
"System, show me my stats!" I exclaimed with a firm voice, yet a strong sense of curiosity tingled within me. My heart was beating slightly faster than usual. Every time I summoned this status panel, there was always a sense of anticipation about the changes that might have occurred.
A transparent blue screen materialized before me, filling my vision with information that was both familiar and perpetually intriguing.
[Name: Yūsha Himaru]
[Age: 7 Years Old]
[Level: 1]
[Vitality: 135]
[Intelligence: 135]
[Sense: 133]
[Quirk: Dungeon Master (Max)]
[Available Points: 0]
This status panel... simple, indeed very simple, but to me, it was a window to my progress. The numbers displayed there were not just ordinary figures; they were a tangible representation of how hard I had worked, how far I had grown since this system first appeared in my life. Every single point increase was proof of the training, discipline, and determination I had cultivated.
It had been almost a year since that exhilarating Yuuei Sports Festival concluded. Time truly flew by at an astonishing pace. It felt like just yesterday I was participating in that festival, yet a year had already passed, bringing with it various events and experiences that had shaped me. This year had felt incredibly packed with activities, training, and challenges, yet I had enjoyed every second of it.
And that meant… it was that time again. It was almost time for me to receive my annual reward from the system. I always looked forward to this moment with high anticipation. This annual reward wasn't just an item or a stat boost; it was, more than that, an incredible injection of motivation. It was a reminder that my efforts were valued, that the system acknowledged my growth, and it always gave me extra encouragement to continue training, keep improving, and become stronger.
I still vividly remembered the first time this status panel appeared. My stats… were truly pathetic compared to now. Almost all of my three main stats—Vitality, Intelligence, and Sense—were only in the 10-point range. And that was even after receiving the 'average adult stats' gift from the system when it first activated. I chuckled softly, recalling how weak I had been back then.
Now, look at the difference. I could earn 1 free point every time I completed the daily tasks given by the system, and I had made the most of it over the past year. This incredible improvement, from just 10 points to hundreds, truly demonstrated how much effort and dedication I had poured in. It wasn't just about the numbers; it was about the journey, about the transformation, about real growth.
"Does that mean… I'm already very strong now?" The question arose in my mind, tickling my curiosity and a hint of vanity. I compared my current stats to my past self, and the difference was striking.
However, another voice within me quickly dampened that surge of vanity. Not really, the voice cautioned. Even though my current stats were almost thirteen times that of a normal adult, there was one thing to keep in mind: my Quirk. Dungeon Master (Max).
This Quirk… was unique, very different from the normal Quirks that others possessed. Normal Quirks often granted explosive special abilities, superpowers, or dramatic stat enhancements. My Quirk was not like that.
These high stats of mine might be surprising to some, but in reality, my strength didn't necessarily make me superior to others in a direct fight. My Quirk was Dungeon Master.
This Quirk granted me understanding and control over 'dungeons', mysterious underground spaces filled with monsters and traps. It gave me the ability to manipulate the environment, create traps, and possibly control monsters within dungeons. But outside of dungeons, in the real world, its effects… were less directly felt.
My Quirk only made me as strong as thirteen ordinary adults… again, if measured by my base stats. In the context of a world filled with superheroes and supervillains like this, this strength might be enough to survive, maybe enough to protect myself and my loved ones.
But 'extraordinary'? No, not at all. Compared to the powerful characters who had appeared in the anime I had watched in my previous life, my strength was still far from being 'special'.
So, I wasn't overly proud after realizing that I was thirteen times stronger than a regular adult. There was a slight sense of disappointment, to be honest. But then, I remembered my current age again: seven years old. Seven years old. At such a young age, I was already far stronger than the average child my age, even those with Quirk-type enhancements.
This fact… well, it gave me a little pride. Just a little. But that pride was also accompanied by a strong sense of awareness: this journey was still very long. There was still much for me to learn, much for me to train, and many obstacles I had yet to face.
Suddenly, the sound of my bedroom door opening without a knock interrupted my thoughts.
"Himaru, it's time for you to come out for breakfast! Mom's finished making breakfast," a cheerful little girl's voice suddenly echoed in my room.
Emilia. My adopted younger sister. She had just entered my room without permission, without knocking first. This bad habit of hers had been getting worse since… well, since her status in our family had 'perhaps' slightly surpassed mine in certain respects. She walked in casually, her gaze sweeping across my room as if this room was part of her personal territory.
"Alright, but next time if you want to enter my room, make sure you knock on the door first!" I said with a slightly helpless tone. I tried to reprimand her gently, trying to teach her manners, although sometimes it felt like talking to the wind.
"Okay, okay!" she replied in a nonchalant, even somewhat dismissive tone. Her tone of voice indicated that she might not have really been listening to what I said, let alone learning from her 'mistake'. She was more focused on the breakfast that was waiting for her downstairs.
Hearing her response that seemed to show no intention of changing, for a moment I almost regretted my decision in the past. Why was I so enthusiastic about accepting this impudent little sister into our family? The thought crossed my mind, just for a moment, before I came back to realize the actual reality. Behind her sometimes impolite behavior, behind her mischief that often made me shake my head, I knew deep down in her heart, Emilia cared enough about me. We were siblings, bound by an unseen yet strong bond of kinship.
Sighing, I got out of bed and left my room, following Emilia towards the dining room. The fragrant aroma of Mom's cooking already filled the air, making my stomach rumble. The dining table had been filled with various delicious dishes that Mom had lovingly prepared. The morning atmosphere in our house was always like this: warm, lively, and pleasant.
After a delicious breakfast and changing into my school uniform, it was time for us to leave. Emilia and I, like other elementary school students, had to go to school to study.
Ryuko-nee, our older neighbor sister, also left with us as usual. Her presence always made the journey to school feel more lively and enjoyable. Ryuko-nee always had interesting stories or fresh jokes that made us laugh all the way.
What was different from usual was… this time, the three of us, along with Mom and Dad, were driving us to school by car. Car. The word still felt a bit foreign yet joyful. This car, our family's private car, had become a symbol of the progress the Himaru family had achieved.
No longer a rental car that we used to use for special occasions. This car was our own, bought with the money from our family's hard work. Our restaurant, my parents' small restaurant, had started to grow rapidly.
And all of this was thanks to the secret recipe I received from the system. That recipe… a simple recipe, actually, but somehow it had an extraordinary appeal. That recipe had brought a big change, making our restaurant increasingly popular among customers, and ultimately, bringing financial success.
Because of that, thanks to the success of the restaurant, my family was finally able to buy a private car. The car wasn't too luxurious, not the latest model with advanced features. But that car… was our car. A car that was decent and comfortable enough to use for daily driving. A car that took us wherever we wanted to go, together.
This car might not be luxurious compared to the luxury cars often showcased on television. But for us, this car was more than enough. It was tangible proof that our family's life had significantly improved. It was an achievement to be grateful for.
Arriving at the elementary school, the car stopped in front of the gate. Emilia and I immediately got out of the car, not forgetting to say our farewell greetings to our parents. This simple routine had become a habit since my parents bought their first car. This vehicle had truly provided convenience and comfort on our daily commute.
The car had truly brought a big change in our lives, providing comfort and efficiency in our daily routines. Every morning, we would get out at school with our backpacks on our backs, while Ryuko-nee would be dropped off at the tram station by my parents before they started their day at the restaurant.
"I'm off, Dad, Mom," I greeted my parents with a voice full of enthusiasm. There was a new spirit every morning, a spirit to learn, a spirit to pursue dreams.
"Me too, Dad and Mom too," Emilia added, following my example with the same spirit. She always imitated whatever I did, sometimes with a slight Emilia-typical modification.
"Alright, study hard in your classes, you two!" my mom replied to our greetings with a gentle voice full of affection. Her tone of voice was always warm and soothing. My dad, as usual, just nodded briefly, putting on the same 'cool' expression. That pretended cool expression of his… for some reason always managed to make us smile. Maybe it was because it was Dad's way of showing his affection in a unique way.
After saying goodbye to my parents, we both walked towards the school entrance, ready to face a new day with enthusiasm and determination to learn. Or that's what normal students were supposed to do in general. Study, play, socialize, and enjoy childhood.
But we two… well, we were indeed not like some other ordinary students. Although our daily actions and behaviors looked like other normal students, there was something different inside us. We had a clear goal, burning ambition, and a plan we were currently executing.
This goal made us a little different from other students, even though it might not be visible at first glance. Behind our seemingly ordinary appearances, there was a burning spirit and determination to achieve our dreams. Dreams that might be too big for children our age, but we didn't care. We would chase them, step by step, day by day.
That difference could be seen from what we both talked about during our break time at school. Our conversations weren't about trivial things like ordinary children: new toys, favorite cartoons, or gossip about classmates. Our conversations… were much more serious, more ambitious. We talked about the big project we were currently running together. These conversations reflected our ambition and focus that differed from our classmates.
"Himaru, have you seen the total downloads of our game yesterday?" Emilia asked me with obvious enthusiasm radiating from her voice. Her eyes sparkled, her cheeks flushed with excitement. She must have checked our game stats again.
"Not yet, but it probably didn't increase that much," I replied casually, trying to lower my expectations. I didn't want to get my hopes up too high, didn't want to be too disappointed if reality didn't meet expectations. Managing expectations was key to keeping my spirits stable.
"You guessed way wrong! It's actually the opposite! Yesterday the total downloads of our game skyrocketed, with more than 50 thousand downloads in a single day!" Emilia said excitedly, almost shouting in glee. Her eyes shone like shooting stars, her face beaming with joy.
I was also slightly surprised, even arguably very surprised by this information. A download surge of that magnitude in a single day was something extraordinary and unexpected. 50 thousand downloads… that was a fantastic number, especially for a game made by two little kids like us.
"Seriously?" I asked, making sure I hadn't misheard.
Emilia nodded quickly, her face still beaming. "Seriously! I'm not lying! I saw it myself on the developer dashboard!"
If you're wondering why we were having conversations like this, why we were so enthusiastic about discussing game downloads, it was because we were currently implementing the first stage of our grand plan.
This plan of ours was not just a fleeting ambition, not just a pipe dream. It was a project that we had meticulously planned, thought through thoroughly, and executed with firm determination.
This plan was actually very simple, at least in concept: to accumulate wealth. We both shared the same belief, a deep conviction, that with sufficient financial resources, we could achieve much more. Wealth would open doors, provide freedom, and make it easier for us to reach bigger goals in the future.
Therefore, to achieve our initial goal, which was to accumulate wealth, we decided to create a game. I, with the programming knowledge I had acquired from my previous life, was responsible for the technical side of game development.
Emilia, with her natural drawing talent, played a role in creating the visual art assets in the game. The experience and expertise from my previous life gave me a solid foundation for this project. I knew what games were popular, what genres many people liked, and how to make a game that was engaging and addictive.
Emilia did have a pretty good drawing talent, especially for a child her age. But undeniably, she was somewhat inexperienced in creating more complex drawings, images with high detail, or complex animations.
However, her passion and dedication to drawing were very impressive. She was always trying to improve her skills, learning new techniques, and never gave up despite facing challenges.
So, considering both our abilities and limitations, I decided to make a game that was quite popular in my previous life but the need for graphic art wasn't too high. A simple game, yet addictive, and playable by anyone.
The result… Stardew Valley was reborn in this world from the hands of two little kids. We succeeded in creating a game that was simple yet very engaging, combining elements of farming simulation, social life, and light adventure.
And the response we had received so far had been very positive. Player reviews were excellent, a player community had begun to form, and most importantly, the number of downloads of our game continued to increase every day. Seeing how our hard work yielded tangible results was something very satisfying. We knew that this was just the first step in our grand plan. A promising first step, and we were ready for the next steps.
