Chapter 3: 3- Not-So-Local-Spidey
Sighing to himself, Jayce was tinkering with the Spider-Computer, making himself custom gadgets, as well as making a new draft for his suit.
Progressing on the monitor next to him was a side project code named, Project: Oracle. Popping down next to him, Penny Parker, the young girl from earlier, asked him a slew of questions.
"What's your world like? Are there other spider people? Are you famous? What kind of gadgets are you making? Do you need help with an AI?" She tilted her head at him cutely.
"Similar to this one, not yet, no, spider related, and definitely." Jayce answered, having comprehended the extent of her rapid fire questions. "I'm trying to make an AI that can help me with micro control of my gadgets as well as keep an eye out when I need it to."
Penny, a bit stunned at his thoughtfulness, quickly fell back into excitement. "Oooo, I can help! Lemme program it and you'll have everything you'd ever want in a spiderbot!"
Patting her head, Jay smiled at Penny. "Thanks for the help Penny, It means a lot to me. In the meantime, I'll work on my gadgets and suit…again."
It isnt likely that he'd finish the second suit before the final battle, but he'd at least have a few things to take with him. One of those things would be new and improved web hooters because the ones he had designed with his powers were honestly crappy.
'They got the job done, but nothing else. The nozzles couldn't even be adjusted at all.' Jay complained. 'But what was I expecting with a half baked design from it anyway?"
Briefly moving his thoughts to his situation. He had recently transmigrated, was briefly in Oscorp, got sucked into the Spider-verse situation, and was currently waiting for the story to progress. 'I think Miles should be meeting Peter B tonight, so I have another night before the plot really kicks off.'
Jayce's new mental capacities were running wild, running numbers faster than anything he had ever thought capable. 'The frequency of glitches is increasing, along with the intensity. We have about two days before our cells and our existence begins to eat itself to correct the anomaly- Us being from another universe being said anomaly.'
Stopping his work on the web shooters, Jayce spun around to another monitor and began to run a completely different set of equations. 'I might be able to create a stabilizer, but not nearly enough time to be usable in this situation.'
Sighing, he turned his attention back to the shooters. "I need a bunch of different settings, all compacted together into a sleek design. A traversal mode, combat mode, structural mode, and an AI to control it all seamlessly. Luckily, Penny is working on that AI for me…"
It wasn't until a few hours later that he finished the web shooters, allowing Jayce to get some much needed experience. Sighing, Jayce got up and walked over to the elevator.
"I'm going out on a patrol. I can't sit still like this." Noir nodded at him, fully focused on a rubik's cube he had found somewhere.
"I'll be finished with that AI when you get back, Jay!" Penny smiled.
"I'll keep an eye out for other spiders, just to be sure."
—
Half an hour later, Jayce had crawled his way atop the tallest building in New York: The Empire State Building. Of course Oscorp Tower stood taller, but that was subjective.
"Oscorp is still a small company in my world, I think." Memories had been starting to flow in recently- a small blessing from The Weaver for his unfortunate circumstances. There was something else too, something to do with his powers. Weaver had 'hacked' into his spider-sense to tell him that indirectly, a feeling rather than words.
"So far, I have super strength, speed, I'm assuming durability, reflexes as seen when combined with spider-sense, and whatever else Weaver decided to give me." Jayce told himself, a grin threatening to spread from under his mask.
He was wearing his new suit, sitting atop the monument with his legs dangling over the edge. Jayce had fought his instincts and climbed up the building using his new sticky powers.
"Or is it a bioelectric type of attraction? I really should figure that out so it can't be exploited." He muttered to himself.
Noticing that he was stalling, Jayce closed his eyes and took a deep breath, focusing his mind. And before he could think about it, he threw himself off of the ledge.
For the first few moments, he felt like he was floating in a void, perfectly peaceful. Then a tingle at the back of his mind began to bug him, telling him of oncoming danger.
Sigh.
Opening his eyes, Jayce saw that he was about halfway down to the ground. '...17 seconds before impact.'
Glancing at a nearby building, he aimed carefully before pressing his ring and middle finger into the base of his palm, shooting out a thick web that stuck directly to said building.
Bracing as the web line gained tension, Jayce was somewhat prepared when he fully focused into his arm, specifically his shoulder as he tried to adjust his trajectory.
Then that weight was gone, as he swung up into the air like a pendulum, freeing him from gravity temporarily. Letting go of the web, Jayce shot out with his left, catching his weight a bit smoother this time.
Right.
Left.
Again.
Again.
Again.
For the next hour, all Jayce did was practice his swinging, getting better and smoother as he went. Some people below him noticed his actions, talking pictures as he swung by. 'That's going to be tomorrow's biggest news. One day Spider-Man is dead and the next there's what, seven of them?'
Just as he thought this, his spider-sense went off. It was like a dull ache in the back of his head- It wasn't his danger he was sensing, it was someone else's.
Mid-air, Jayce zipped himself to the side, flipping over buildings using his newfound natural agility, following the tingle in the back of his head. After a minute of swinging and running, Jayce was met with the image of a mugging.
Two gangsters were pressing a young woman to a wall, one rifling through her pockets and the other holding a knife to her neck.
Shooting a web further down the alley, it hit a trash can and made a loud noise, attracting the attention of the first. "Huh?" He glanced at his partner, who nodded.
"Go check it out, I'll hold her here."
Doing as advised, he walked over to find that part of the trashcan was covered in webs. "What? But isn't Spidey dead?"
"Not this one." A voice said behind him.
Whipping around, he turned to see that his partner was gone and the woman was running away. But what caught his attention was that she was looking at the wall above him.
Turing to see what she was looking at, he was met with a figure in a mask less than a foot away from him, those pearly white visors staring into his soul.
"Hi." The figure gave him a little wave.
"AA-MMPH!" His terrified voice was cut off when his vision went white, webbing cocooning him in webbing, leaving him just enough airflow to breathe and stay conscious.
Hanging the two would-be muggers out for all to see on a nearby lightpost, Jayce struck a little sticky note that this world Peter had created for this situation.
Swinging away, a nearby civilian called the cops for him, and read the note he had left.
