Chapter 4: Ritual
In the "Blade" movie, Deacon Frost leads a group of vampires to easily capture the leader of the Vampire Council, Dragonetti, and then uses the traditional vampire sunbath to reduce him to ashes.
After that, Deacon Frost threatens the council with Dragonetti's fangs. The twelve arrogant elders surrender on the spot. In the end, Deacon Frost becomes the sacrifice himself!
The whole process is as simple as playing house. When Maverick watched the movie, he complained, "These pureblood vampires are too useless, right?"
And now, Maverick was complaining again in real life because the process was unfolding exactly as it did in the movie.
In just a few days, Deacon Frost took control of the entire North American vampire clan—only North America; the vampire clans are divided by region and aren't unified.
"It's too simple, isn't it? Are purebloods really that useless?"
Maverick couldn't help but ask his captain, the former cowboy boss. When Dragonetti was captured, Maverick was new and could only wait outside, so he didn't know what happened inside.
"You're young, aren't you?" Cowboy boss James said. "Actually, everyone has been fed up with the Vampire Council for a long time. We're vampires, the top of the food chain. Why should we follow human rules?
"And I'm not just talking about half-blood vampires—many purebloods feel the same way!"
Maverick asked, "You mean there are purebloods helping Boss Deacon?"
James nodded. "Yes. Even if they didn't help, they just stood by and watched. It's the way things are going. The Twelve Elders knew this before they surrendered!"
"Looks like we vampires should be happy about this!"
Maverick agreed but still had some doubts. Was it really that simple? Shouldn't the Speaker and the Twelve Elders have shown some resistance? Were they really so weak?
"Better days are coming soon!" James said with anticipation. Not only him but other half-bloods seemed to see a bright future ahead.
Maverick laughed at this. "Vampires die when they see the light, buddy!"
After successfully taking control, Deacon Frost began dealing with Blade, who had caused him a lot of trouble recently. He first led a raid on Blade's hideout, seriously injuring Blade's mentor and assistant, Whistler, and biting him. Then he waited at the vampire mansion for Blade to come!
Blade didn't disappoint. The vampires Deacon Frost had prepared were no match for him. He fought his way from the bottom of the building to the top, killing hundreds of vampires.
But in the end, Blade was captured because Deacon Frost had an ace up his sleeve—Blade's mother.
Blade always thought his mother was dead, not knowing she had been turned into a vampire and had become Deacon's lover. Shocked, he was caught!
Then came the climax. Deacon Frost planned to use the Daywalker Blade and the blood of the Twelve Elders to summon the Blood God at the altar, merging with him so he could become a Blood God unafraid of sunlight, leading vampires to battle humans!
The altar was ancient, tall, and magnificent. The walls were covered with strange runes, making it look mysterious, and the floor was made of white marble, appearing very noble.
After Deacon Frost deciphered the vampire scriptures, he spent a lot of time refurbishing the altar and installing lights, so it looked bright. However, it was still a vampire altar and felt eerie!
As a low-ranking grunt, Maverick wasn't allowed inside the altar and could only guard outside. But he found a way to sneak in—he bribed James!
"Don't wander around," James warned. "If you mess up Boss Deacon's big event, I can't protect you!"
Maverick smiled and said, "Don't worry, I just want to take a look inside. After all, it's the Blood God!"
"Alright then."
James nodded, then hesitated. "By the way, after we succeed, will these dollar bills still be useful?"
"Is this the start of a sweet dream?" Maverick thought to himself. He said aloud, "If not, you can give them back to me!"
"In your dreams! Now hurry up and patrol over there; don't just stand around!"
James put on a stern face. Maverick shrugged and went on patrol with an automatic rifle.
It only took a day for Maverick to familiarize himself with the altar's layout and secretly bring in his equipment. Now, everything was ready for the next day's ceremony!
The following night, near midnight, Deacon Frost locked Blade into an iron torture device above the altar. The device was full of spikes. Once closed, Blade's blood, along with his screams, flowed into channels, filling the runes on the walls.
"Let's begin!"
Deacon Frost waved his hand excitedly. The vampires immediately brought in the Twelve Elders and tied them to twelve pillars engraved with special runes.
One of the elders, a black vampire, roared, "Deacon, the Blood God is just a legend! You won't gain anything!"
"Only you fools think it's a legend!"
Deacon sneered. His decades-long dream was finally coming true. Soon, no one could stop him—not the vampire clan, not anyone.
Meanwhile, Maverick arrived where Blade was imprisoned. Three people guarded the area: two armed vampires and Blade's mother!
"In the movie, when the heroine came to rescue him, no one was guarding. Why are there so many now?" Maverick thought.
Dressed in UV-resistant tights, carrying a bag, and wearing sunglasses, Maverick took out a large UV lamp from his bag. It was made by Frank's colleague.
Too bad Frank's colleagues couldn't develop UV grenades; otherwise, they'd have a better chance in this fight!
Without wasting time, Maverick pointed the UV light at one of the door guards and turned it on. A purple light shone on the vampire's face.
The other vampire was startled and looked toward the light, only to be hit head-on by the purple beam. Without surprise, he also turned to ash!
The female vampire inside was alarmed. She was about to scream when Maverick pointed the UV light at her and said, "Ma'am, don't shout, or you'll die!"
The female vampire, Vanessa, asked angrily, "Who are you to oppose Deacon?"
"I'm just me," Maverick smiled. "Now, please release your son. You're too cruel—you'd even harm your own son?"
"I'm helping him! He's a vampire, not human, and so are you!" Vanessa shouted. "When Deacon becomes the Blood God, he, I, and Blade can be reunited as a family!"
"Family reunion? So Deacon is Blade's stepfather now?"
Maverick didn't know how to react, but Marvel does love family drama. He said, "Enough talk. Open the torture device!"
Although Vanessa was unwilling, she complied. Maverick's UV light was too threatening; even with her speed, she might not dodge it.
Under Maverick's watch, Vanessa operated the device. The wounded Blade fell to the ground weakly, panting, his red eyes filled with madness, like a bloodthirsty beast!
This was Blade's bloodlust. Maverick was prepared. He threw some blood bags from his bag and shouted, "Blade, drink up! We've got a tough fight ahead!"
Seeing the blood, Blade lunged at it, tearing open the bags and drinking frantically. Vanessa saw this and said, "You can't fight Deacon! Surrender now, and you might live!"
"That's our business; you don't need to worry," Maverick smiled.
Soon, Blade had drained six blood bags—a huge amount. As he drank, his wounds healed visibly. His healing ability was clearly much stronger than elite vampires!
With his bloodlust satisfied, the madness faded from Blade's eyes. He wiped the blood from his mouth, stood up, and asked Maverick, "Who are you?"
"I told you we'd meet again," Maverick smiled slightly. He took out a submachine gun and a short sword from his bag and tossed them to Blade. "I made these myself. The bullets and blade are silver-plated!"
"It's you?"
Blade recognized Maverick. He caught the gun and sword but eyed Maverick's sunglasses. Maverick quipped, "So, sunglasses are really your thing? These are for UV protection."
Blade was a bit disappointed. He strapped the submachine gun to his waist, swung the short sword a couple of times, and said, "This sword is average. I'm getting my own back!"
Maverick rolled his eyes. "Do you ever think before you speak? How haven't you been beaten up yet?"
"Because the only person who talks to me is an old man worse than me."
Thinking of Whistler, a trace of sadness crossed Blade's face, but he quickly composed himself. He turned to Vanessa and said softly, "Mother!"
Vanessa looked panicked. She pleaded, "I'm your mother; you won't kill me, will you?"
"I want to free you from this," Blade said sadly. He meant it and intended to do it!
"No, you can't!"
Vanessa turned and fled. Blade immediately chased her, and they quickly engaged in combat.
Although Vanessa was an elite vampire, she had little combat experience and was no match for Blade. He soon had her pinned against the wall.
Blade raised the short sword, reluctance flashing in his eyes, but he steeled himself. Maverick couldn't stand it anymore and said, "Blade, even if you think this needs to be done, you shouldn't be the one to do it!"
Blade hesitated, then knocked Vanessa unconscious with the hilt. His heart wasn't as hard as he thought.
Maverick said, "Alright, now it's time to deal with Deacon Frost. If he becomes the Blood God, we'll have big trouble!"
Blade carefully laid Vanessa down, then turned to Maverick and asked, "What's your goal?"
"Of course I have a goal, but it doesn't conflict with yours," Maverick smiled. He handed the UV light to Blade. "This can switch from flashlight mode to bulb mode. It's very effective against vampires!"
Blade took the UV light, looked at Maverick, and said, "I know you're using me. I don't care. Killing vampires is my duty. But if you become one, I'll kill you too!"
Maverick solemnly promised, "I'm human. I'll never become a vampire!"
"Good."
Blade didn't waste words. He nodded and went to the window with the UV light. He saw Deacon Frost and a group of cheering vampires below. Switching the UV light to bulb mode, he held it in his left hand, grabbed the submachine gun in his right, and jumped onto the railing.
"Deacon Frost!"
Blade shouted and leaped from the five-story height. Purple light flooded the hall. Over a dozen ordinary vampires let out shrill screams, smoking and melting away as if splashed with acid!
Even the elite vampires and the Twelve Elders had melting marks on their faces, looking miserable.
"Blade! Kill him and destroy that lamp!" Deacon roared in rage.
The four elite vampires who could still move drew their pistols and, enduring the pain, fired upward. The ordinary vampires couldn't shoot—they were already dying!
Despite the gunfire, the purple light made it hard to aim. Blade landed unscathed, rolled, and stopped.
He tossed the UV light upward, raised the submachine gun, and fired at Deacon. Deacon and the others ducked and ran in panic. One vampire was shot in the calf, a hole appearing instantly!
By now, the ordinary vampires had been annihilated by the purple light, their rifles clattering to the ground.
Blade rolled to dodge, shooting at an elite vampire. The vampire was hit in the heart, screamed, and turned to ash.
"Damn it! Turn off that light!" Deacon hid behind a pillar and shouted.
The pureblood vampire Mercury, who was with him, quickly raised her gun, fired, and shattered the falling UV light. Without the light, the vampires felt relief, no longer in constant pain.
"Deacon, the Twelve Elders are injured. We can't fight here—they might get killed by stray bullets!" Mercury fired two shots at Blade, then turned to Deacon.
He gritted his teeth. "Let's get out of here, bring in more people, and finish off Blade together!"
"Yes!"
The few remaining vampires protected Deacon and fled, and Blade naturally chased after them. Now, the altar was empty except for the twelve injured vampire elders.
"That was easier than I thought!" Maverick said.
He jumped down from the fifth floor. When the injured elders saw someone approaching, they hurriedly said, "Save us! We can give you anything you want!"
Maverick ignored the sacrificial elders. He stood in the middle of the altar and looked up at the ceiling.
"Isn't there supposed to be lightning striking?"
He was pondering when, suddenly, several vampires rushed in from the side.
