Chapter 3: Elite
Maverick had brought Quinn here for only one purpose: to drain his blood and become an elite vampire himself. As for any promises of rewards, Maverick had just used that to trick John and Jenny!
What could be more important than power?
But the sight of the charred corpse was hard to stomach. Maverick hesitated for a moment, but then he swallowed his disgust, revealed his fangs, and bit into Quinn's neck.
"I'm never eating burnt food again!"
Maverick forced himself to start sucking the blood, treating it like some super bitter medicine he had to take.
A vampire's blood is cold, and so was Quinn's. But strangely, after drinking his blood, Maverick felt warm and comfortable all over. This sensation made him involuntarily increase his suction!
As Maverick continued to drink, Quinn's body gradually shriveled. The crisis of death jolted Quinn awake from his coma. He struggled hard to break free, but Maverick held him down. Quinn could only keep roaring, but his voice grew weaker and weaker until it finally faded away.
Maverick raised his head and shouted, his mouth full of blood. He felt filled with power; he could probably take on a few tigers!
The feeling of becoming stronger was truly wonderful!
At that moment, heavy footsteps echoed as a figure walked in. He looked at the shriveled Quinn on the ground and said, "Didn't expect Quinn to die by your hands."
Maverick froze. He turned around slowly and saw Blade staring at him expressionlessly.
"Wait, wasn't I just being a bit cocky? How did Blade show up to put me in my place so quickly?" Maverick thought to himself. But he wasn't too afraid. He first stabbed a silver stake into Quinn's heart, causing him to turn to ash, and then stood up.
Maverick wiped the blood from his mouth and said to Blade, "Then you should thank me. I helped you eliminate an enemy!"
Blade drew the sword strapped to his back and said, "No problem. I'll help you find peace now."
"Is that how you thank someone?" Maverick complained.
Blade replied coldly, "Being a vampire is a curse. It's only right to thank me for ending it."
"You make a good point."
Maverick was speechless. If he remembered correctly, in the movie, Blade used this reasoning to kill his own mother, who had also become a vampire.
Maverick said, "Hold on. You're killing me because I'm a vampire, right? Then why not kill yourself? You're a vampire too."
Blade said firmly, "I'm human."
Maverick retorted, "You mean your body is that of a vampire, but your heart is human? If that's the case, then I'm human too, so you shouldn't kill me!"
Blade said, "You're not."
"Why not? Since becoming a vampire, I've never sucked a living person's blood, nor have I wanted to. Compared to me, it seems you've drunk human blood before, haven't you?"
Maverick sneered, "Blade, seems like justice is on my side!"
Blade fell silent. Before he met Whistler, he did drink the blood of living people. He said, "If you don't drink it now, you will in the future."
"By your logic, couldn't you arrest anyone on the street? After all, they might commit a crime someday!"
Maverick said disdainfully, "Ever heard of 'innocent until proven guilty'? It applies here!"
Blade was silent again. After a moment, he said, "If you truly don't drink human blood, then I can let you go, but only if you accept my supervision."
"Looks like the Daywalker isn't as cold as the legends say."
Maverick smiled. He put his hand into his jacket pocket and asked, "Mind if I ask you two questions?"
Blade replied coolly, "What questions?"
Maverick asked, "How did you find me? I shouldn't have left any traces."
Blade replied, "You're cautious, but I put a tracker on Quinn."
"Ah, that explains it."
Maverick understood. He then asked, "Second question: You're still wearing sunglasses at night. Are those sunglasses part of you?"
"?"
Blade's face was full of confusion. At that moment, Maverick took out two homemade smoke bombs and threw them on the ground. Smoke quickly filled the area, turning everything white!
Blade immediately rushed into the smoke but couldn't find Maverick. After a brief delay, the smoke grew even thicker!
After a while, Maverick's voice came from the window: "Blade, Deacon Frost is up to something big. I plan to infiltrate his group to investigate. We'll meet again someday."
"Don't drink human blood, or I won't let you go! Remember, Blade is watching you!"
Blade sheathed his sword and said coolly. Maverick laughed and didn't answer. He turned and jumped out of the second-floor window, got into John's car, and quickly left.
"This Blade is pretty interesting. But come to think of it, if Blade didn't go to the hospital, did he miss meeting the heroine?"
Maverick pondered, then put it out of his mind. It wasn't his concern!
Blade stood upstairs watching the departing car. He couldn't help but touch his sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses at night did seem a bit silly.
Then Blade shook his head. Who cared? Looking cool was what mattered most!
"Blade stormed into the club, and Quinn disappeared?"
Hearing his subordinates' report, Deacon Frost, who was wearing an unbuttoned shirt, was furious. He shouted, "Hurry up and find Quinn! Make sure to bring him back. Also, tell those half-bloods to keep an eye on the hospitals for any unusual bodies. Quinn doesn't die that easily."
"Yes, Mr. Deacon!"
The vampires hurried out to carry out his orders. Deacon paced back and forth angrily. Quinn was his right-hand man. Without him, many things would be harder to accomplish.
At that moment, a blonde female vampire dressed in white said, "Deacon, let's set a trap and get rid of Blade. He's killed many of us lately!"
This female vampire was Mercury. Although she was a pureblood, she followed Deacon and worked for him.
Deacon's eyes flashed fiercely, and he said, "The Daywalker can't die yet. I've deciphered the Vampire Bible. I need him and the twelve pureblood elders!"
Mercury's eyes lit up, and she asked excitedly, "Deacon, are you finally going after those timid, immortal old guys?"
"It's time for them to contribute to the vampire cause!"
Deacon said, "I have a way to deal with Blade. I've got a trump card. When the time comes, capturing him will be easy. Mercury, go recruit some strong fighters. We'll need a lot of people!"
"Got it!"
Mercury agreed without hesitation. Taking on purebloods would require many people!
The world would eventually belong to their kind, and only Deacon Frost could lead them to victory. Mercury believed this, and so did the other vampires!
Deacon Frost—the hope of the vampire race!
In the training ground, Maverick held a wooden stick and attacked Frank with lightning speed. Even Frank had to stay on his toes to defend against his rapid attacks!
However, Maverick couldn't fully control his speed. Frank seized an opening and punched him in the cheek, making him stagger a few steps and nearly fall!
Maverick said, feeling down, "Instructor, we agreed not to hit the face!"
"What's with your speed? Why did it suddenly get so much faster?"
Frank was puzzled. If it weren't for Maverick's lack of control over his new speed, Frank might've had a harder time.
Not that he couldn't win—in a real fight, Maverick would still lose. But in a sparring match, Maverick could take advantage.
"I ate something and, well, evolved!"
Maverick said, "Instructor, let's go again. I want to get the hang of this new power quickly!"
"Alright! You attack!"
Frank knew something was up but didn't press further.
Because of Maverick's improved physique, both of them were exhausted. Frank sat on the ground and took off his gloves, saying, "I think I need to charge you more!"
"Then I'll pay more!"
Maverick laughed. If his plan succeeded, money wouldn't be an issue. If it failed, well, he wouldn't need money anyway!
Frank smiled and said, "Just kidding. The agreed amount is fine."
"If I disappear for a while and you can't reach me, please check my house. I have something for you."
Maverick thought of something and said. He planned to leave something behind to prevent Frank from becoming the Punisher.
Frank glanced at Maverick and advised, "If you've got money, you can hire specialists. In this country, there's little that money can't solve."
He sighed inwardly. Even a military hero like him was taking private jobs for money. It was a bit shameful.
"What I need to do, others can't handle!"
Maverick shook his head. He thought of something and asked Frank, "Instructor, if I want some special weapons, who should I talk to?"
Frank frowned and asked, "What kind of special weapons?"
Maverick said, "Like ultraviolet grenades and guns equipped with UV lights!"
"Ultraviolet? Are you planning to hunt vampires?"
Frank couldn't help but say, "These mods aren't exactly practical."
"Maybe they'll work against vampires!"
Maverick laughed and said, "Instructor, do you know anyone who could help?"
"You'd need to develop those things; it'll take time."
Frank said, "I know someone in logistics. I can ask if anyone's willing to do some side work."
"Why are so many military folks doing side jobs? Is this country going downhill?"
Maverick secretly thought, and he said, "Please ask for me. Money isn't an issue! Oh, and I need a suit that can block UV rays but doesn't hinder movement. It should look like a tight suit."
Frank couldn't help but ask, "I shouldn't pry, but I'm really curious—what are you planning?"
Maverick said honestly, "I'm going to fight vampires and save the world!"
"Maybe lay off the action movies; they're getting to your head!"
Frank stood up and said, "Had enough rest? Let's go practice shooting. You won't improve much in hand-to-hand combat quickly, but if you fire enough rounds, your shooting will get better fast!"
"Sure, let's practice shooting!"
Maverick also stood up. When it came to shooting, he felt confident. After becoming an elite vampire, his vision and reflexes had improved a lot!
In the warehouse of a bar, a cowboy-dressed owner looked at Maverick and asked, "Maverick? Weren't you John's ATM? Where's John?"
"He took me to a blood rave a few days ago, and then Blade showed up."
Maverick replied blankly. Recently, he had met many vampires with John, which was why he'd kept John and Jenny alive for so long.
"That's rough. May he rest in peace, I guess."
The cowboy boss said insincerely, then asked, "You want to join Deacon Frost's team too? We don't take weaklings; we need good fighters. We've got big plans ahead!"
Maverick glanced at the cowboy boss, suddenly pulled out a Glock from his waist, and shot at a decorative wolf head in the warehouse, hitting it square between the eyes and leaving a smoking hole!
The cowboy boss was startled and glared at Maverick. This kid was reckless! Couldn't he have warned before showing off? Didn't he know he could give someone a heart attack?
But the kid's draw was fast—definitely a quick shooter!
Maverick shrugged, holstered his gun like a cowboy, and said, "Thought you were a real cowboy!"
"Maybe fifty years ago, but not anymore!"
The cowboy boss said angrily, "That wolf head costs a thousand bucks. No problem, right?"
"Money really talks around here!"
Maverick thought to himself and asked, "So can I join Deacon Frost's team?"
"As long as you pay up."
The cowboy boss said. Then he asked curiously, "With skills like that, why were you being pushed around by John and Jenny?"
Maverick said, "Without them, I couldn't have integrated into vampire society."
"Smart move."
The cowboy boss said, "Alright, you can stay at the bar for now. Once we've got a few more people, I'll take you to see Miss Mercury!"
Maverick was puzzled, "Miss Mercury? Isn't Deacon Frost the boss?"
The cowboy boss said admiringly, "Miss Mercury handles recruitment. She's a pureblood vampire! Only Deacon Frost can get a pureblood to work for him!"
"That's why we're following him!"
Maverick laughed. And just like that, he infiltrated Deacon Frost's team, becoming a proud grunt under Miss Mercury!
"Being a grunt is fine. The key is getting into the altar where the ritual takes place. By the way, will Deacon's coup be as easy as it was in the movie?"
