Chapter 86: Ch.86 But There Is a Space Stone
As dawn approached, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents became even busier.
"Commander, we've lost contact with the agents monitoring Stark Tower."
"What?" Nick Fury's face darkened.
"Why wasn't I informed earlier?"
"Apologies, sir. They were reporting normally until now."
"Motherf—, they must've been hypnotized by Loki just like Barton," Fury cursed.
The next moment, a dazzling blue beam shot up from Stark Tower, slowly blooming into a terrifying portal several kilometers wide in the sky.
"The Chitauri army is coming. It's just like the portal from back then. It's the Space Stone!"
At the window, Old Steve shouted in shock.
Charlie looked at the blue light in the city, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"Sure enough, Fury didn't tell us the truth. He must've thought we were also after the Tesseract, so he hid it from us."
Old Steve gritted his teeth. "Shit, I've never found Nick this annoying."
"You cursed."
"I know. At my age, what are you gonna do about it?"
"Alright."
Charlie equipped his spare web-shooter and started stretching.
"One question: when you first woke up and saw your commanding officer was a black guy with an eyepatch, what did you think?"
"I thought I was in hell."
Old Steve quickly got himself ready. "The existence of the Space Stone in this world is actually good news for us. What happens next should go as I expected."
Charlie nodded. "If all goes well, once those councilmen decide to use nukes against the Chitauri, our chance will come."
"Wait, you're planning—?" Old Steve suddenly realized something, his face showing surprise.
Charlie grinned. "Yep, you guessed it."
He intended to replicate Iron Man's heroic move from the first Avengers movie, intercepting the nuke and destroying the Sanctuary II far off in space to become the MVP of the match.
"Wait, if you use a nuke to take out the Chitauri army and secure the resurrection spot, what about me?" Old Steve's face showed reluctance.
Charlie turned. "Before that, I'll help you take care of those guys."
Although giving the resurrection spot to Old Steve seemed wasteful, it would at least prevent Hydra Steve from getting one.
That was, of course, assuming Hydra Steve wasn't the one who took out Tony and young Steve during their private match.
His access to intelligence was still quite limited.
...
Not long after, jets started deploying from the Helicarrier.
In the city's high skies, the massive portal continued spewing out Chitauri soldiers riding their flying chariots.
"Roar!"
Next, giant Leviathan creatures poured out from the portal, plunging all of New York into chaos.
"Ahhh!"
"Run!"
"Aliens are invading Earth!"
"How do you still have the energy to run and scream at your age? That's impressive."
"I can do even better."
The sly old man tripped a young person next to him with his cane, his face beaming with pride.
"Hahaha, this way they'll eat you first. That's experience from a crafty old man…"
Boom!
A laser flashed, and the old man was shot down.
Seeing him fall, the Chitauri soldier hovering midair grinned cruelly.
"Lord Loki ordered us to kill the elderly and children first."
"And we don't eat Earthlings."
"Kid, you were right."
A jet roared across the sky as a red-and-blue figure dove straight down, kicking the Chitauri soldier off his ride.
"Look what I got!" Charlie exclaimed excitedly.
Boom!
The next second, the chariot shook violently, and Charlie frantically slapped at the controls.
"Motherf—, I don't know how to fly this thing!"
As the chariot swerved into a nearby skyscraper, Charlie leaped off, firing webs to latch onto the runaway chariot and flinging it into a group of passing Chitauri soldiers.
Boom!!
Explosions erupted across the city, and the red-and-blue figure swung between buildings, leaving behind barely visible strands of glistening webbing.
Thwip thwip thwip-
Boom!!
Chariots speeding through the air were easily intercepted by his webbing, erupting in flames one after another.
Vroom vroom-
On the messy streets below, Dr. Banner, riding a beat-up motorcycle, arrived at the scene.
He looked up at the terrifying Leviathans above and finally decided to unleash the monster inside him.
"Roar!"
His skin turned green, his body swelling, and the beastly roar echoed down the street.
Boom!!
The green beast kicked off the ground, the unstoppable Hulk hurtling straight into the belly of a Leviathan, wreaking havoc.
"Roar!"
Crack crack crack-
The Leviathan's insides exploded in flames, and its outer exoskeletal armor shattered, leaving it unable to maintain flight.
Boom!!
The giant creature plummeted from midair, carving a massive trench hundreds of meters long into the street below.
"Not bad, Mr. Hulk."
The red-and-blue figure swung above the fallen Leviathan, leaving web traps in his wake. Chitauri soldiers chasing him soon met their ends, falling in pieces across the battlefield.
"I found you, Spider-Man!!"
Zzzzz~
Electric arcs zipped through the city, and Max's eyes burned with hatred.
"I admired you, and you killed me!!"
Max roared in anger, charging. Overhead, jets swept by as the star-spangled shield shot out of Old Steve's hand.
Boom!!
Charlie caught the shield, holding it in front of him. The terrifying arcs of electricity rebounded, smashing into a building, scattering debris everywhere.
"Crazy fan, please calm down." He shouted toward Max's direction.
"You should worry about yourself first!"
A loud crash sounded, and the nearby wall was blasted open. Hydra Steve, his back bristling with blood-red tentacles, charged swiftly.
Seeing this, Charlie swung away to another building.
"Chasing me like this won't earn you a resurrection slot."
"Doesn't matter. What matters is you won't get one either. Stay with us in hell forever!" Hydra Steve laughed maniacally.
Charlie shrugged. "Fine, you guys are nuts."
Just then, there was a loud bang behind him as a bloody arm smashed through the wall.
"Steve, you must live on."
Bucky lunged at Charlie, roaring as he triggered his self-destruct mechanism.
"Bucky!!"
Boom!!
Shrapnel powerful enough to tear Charlie's body apart exploded outward, but Charlie had already curled behind the shield.
Clang clang clang-
Hot shrapnel battered the shield, sending sparks flying, but it couldn't break through and harm Charlie.
Boom!!
Amidst the scorching blast wave, the shield tumbled across the street, and Charlie got up, shaking off the impact. He used his webs to toss the blackened spine Bucky left behind into a pile of rubble.
"Spider-Man doesn't fall for the same trick twice!"
"Modified the self-destruct, huh? Good thing I had the shield." He taunted Hydra Steve, who was charging at him.
"Damned Spider-Man, this is all because of you!!"
After Bucky's death, Hydra Steve, consumed by grief, let out an overwhelming blood mist, unleashing soundwaves and thrashing tentacles.
"Oh boy, I've become the villain now."
Charlie swung away, leaving web traps along the way to hinder Steve.
Max charged again, arcs of electricity crackling, and Charlie yelled out nearby.
"Old man, your turn."
"Coming."
