Chapter 99: Chapter 95. The Awakening of Captain America

In a room with the nostalgic atmosphere of the 1990s, a blond, well-built man opened his eyes as he lay on a steel hospital cot with a plain white mattress. His military instincts kicked in immediately, prompting him to scan his surroundings and assess the situation.

"A swing! A great hit! He sends the ball flying high. Razor's already on third base..."

The slow, uneven rotation of an old ceiling fan made it seem like it might fall at any moment. A bedside lamp cast a warm orange glow, and a wooden radio played commentary from a baseball game. Sunlight filtered through the room's warm-toned curtains, slightly easing the man's tension but leaving him bewildered by his recent awakening. Sitting up, he turned his gaze to the wooden door.

As if on cue, the door opened, revealing a woman dressed in a white blouse and a long brown skirt. Her hair was softly curled, and her makeup mirrored the fashion of a bygone era.

"Good morning… or perhaps good afternoon," she greeted him with a slight smile, correcting herself as she glanced at the clock.

"Where am I?" the man asked. It was none other than Captain America, Steve Rogers. The surroundings felt oddly surreal. Not long ago, he had been battling Nazis during World War II, facing off against the Red Skull aboard an aircraft, only to crash and be buried beneath ice for seventy long years before being discovered five days ago by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Of course, Steve didn't know any of this yet. His last memory was the fight with the Red Skull, and now he had awoken here, in this unfamiliar room.

"You're at a rehabilitation center in New York City," the woman replied with a kind smile.

"The Dodgers lead 8–4! Oh, those Dodgers! What an incredible game, folks!"

The commentator's voice continued from the radio, but Steve's frown deepened as he processed her response. He glanced toward the window, which offered a view of a street lined with 1990s-style buildings. Familiar yet subtly wrong, the scene left him unsettled.

"Where am I really?" he asked again, his tone more insistent, his gaze sharpening as he fixed on the woman, sensing something amiss.

"I'm not sure what you mean," she said, her smile faltering as nervousness crept in.

"This game... I was there. It was in May of 1941. So tell me the truth—where am I really?" Steve stood up from the bed, his imposing figure closing the gap between them.

She instinctively stepped back, her hand reaching behind her to press a concealed button on a device. Despite her composed expression, her movements betrayed her apprehension. "Captain Rogers..." she began, but her voice was drowned out by the distant hum of an alarm.

The button she had pressed was a silent alert. Moments later, the door burst open, and two soldiers armed with modern equipment stormed into the room. Their gear was unfamiliar to Rogers, but his instincts kicked in. In a flash, he grabbed them both and hurled them into the walls, smashing through the thin barriers.

Steve charged through the newly created opening, discovering that his "room" was a constructed set made of foam and wood panels. The scenery outside the window was nothing more than a painted backdrop. He found himself in a large, dark warehouse. Without hesitation, he sprinted toward the nearest visible exit.

"All agents, Code 13! Repeat, all agents, Code 13!" the woman barked into her radio.

Descending into a lower level, Steve found himself surrounded by individuals in black suits observing him through towering glass walls. Their eyes followed his every move, intensifying his unease. Ignoring the stares, he continued toward the exit.

Bursting outside, he paused only after noticing his surroundings. The streets, buildings, and vehicles were all unfamiliar—far more advanced than anything he remembered. People in strange clothing hurried past enormous screens displaying dazzling advertisements. Overwhelmed, he stood frozen, trying to comprehend the stark contrast between this world and his memories.

Several black SUVs screeched to a halt nearby. Armed agents emerged, ready to apprehend him, but a calm voice interrupted the tense standoff.

"At ease, soldier."

Steve turned to see a tall, dark-skinned man with an eyepatch, clad in a black trench coat. It was Nick Fury.

"Apologies for the little show," Fury said, his tone even. "We thought you could use a soft reintroduction."

"A reintroduction?" Steve asked, his voice heavy with suspicion.

Fury's response hit like a thunderclap: he had been asleep for 70 years. The revelation sent Rogers' mind into a spiral. Seventy years… It meant everyone he knew, his comrades, and even Peggy Carter, were likely gone. Memories of promises made and times shared flooded his mind, sharpening the pain of loss.

"Are you alright?" Fury asked, studying the captain's shifting expressions, concerned about his ability to process such a shock.

"Yeah, it's just..." Steve trailed off, his voice tinged with melancholy. "I missed my date."

"I'm sorry," Fury said, recognizing the weight of those words.

Steve was referring to Peggy Carter, one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s founders. Fury knew she was still alive but suffering from Alzheimer's. He chose not to reveal this just yet, preferring to give the captain time to acclimate. Fury escorted him to the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, where he began briefing him on the world he had missed during his long slumber.

Elsewhere...

"Oh? So Nick Fury has already awakened Captain America?" Noah mused.

In the seaside mansion, surrounded by towering trees, the atmosphere remained serene. Waves crashed against the rocky shore, and from time to time, enormous mutated sea creatures breached the surface, their presence a reminder of the magical forces that had reshaped this world. To contain these creatures and protect the ecosystem, Noah had tasked Lissandra with setting up barriers around the seas and forests. However, some creatures had escaped before the barriers were established, leaving them out of his control.

"Yes," Lissandra replied, her tone steady. "They found him frozen in the ice five days ago, and he has just woken up."

"So Captain America has entered the stage. That means all the key Avengers are assembled. But with Loki already captured, will the Battle of New York even happen?" Noah wondered aloud.

The Battle of New York, central to the Avengers movie, followed the events of Thor. In the aftermath, Loki was taken by Thanos, who gave him an army of Chitauri and the Mind Stone scepter to retrieve the Tesseract from Earth. But with Loki no longer able to fulfill this task, Noah speculated on how Thanos would proceed.

"Whether Thanos comes or not, it'll be clear soon enough. Either way, I'll be ready," Noah said with quiet confidence.
