Chapter 408: Omega
Immediately, Zane lost his temper and complained loudly:
"This plane clearly has no normal humans aboard. Don't forget that on Earth in this universe, only mutants and other extraordinary beings exist."
"So, why do we have to awkwardly pretend to be these overly serious, so-called normal people?"
After Zane finished, he thought his sentiments would instantly gain the approval of his three other non-human group members.
However, he noticed that Rocket, now transformed into a burly man, and Groot, who had become a cute little boy, were thoroughly enjoying themselves, playing a simple game on the back of the airplane seats.
From time to time, they would call over a nervous flight attendant to bring them snacks and drinks.
Next to Zane, Bastis calmly said in a slow and deliberate tone, "Zane, stop complaining. Even if there aren't any normal humans on this planet, pets still aren't allowed on planes."
"..."
Zane was momentarily speechless but then, as if discovering a new continent, pointed excitedly at one of the sparse passengers in the cabin.
One was a woman with a bushy squirrel-like tail. Her leather jacket, filled with pockets and gadgets, occasionally revealed one or two light-red squirrels darting out.
These squirrels had sharp, intelligent eyes and showed no fear of the flight attendants walking up and down the aisle. They seemed to understand the commands of the leather-clad woman, climbing up and down to even fetch her drinks.
Sitting not far from Zane, Roma seemed to have expected him to point out the woman with the squirrel tail. Without looking up from her writing, she said softly,
"That's a unique mutant from this universe—Squirrel Girl."
"In terms of speed, strength, and especially reflexes, she's dozens of times better than ordinary Earth humans and can command squirrels to fight for her."
"She's classified as an Alpha-level mutant."
"Alpha?" Perhaps because she was also a mutant, Lorna showed special interest in this unfamiliar term.
"Yes. It's a grading system unique to Universe 1610," Roma explained. "Because in this universe, there's almost only one human-inhabited planet—Earth—and under the influence of 'Destiny,' all humans here possess the X-gene, making them non-normal humans."
"So, they have classifications like Alpha and Omega, which increase in order. The highest level is Omega."
"Though I hate to admit it, Jasper was an Omega-level mutant when he was alive."
"As for how many Omega-level mutants exist on this universe's Earth, that's currently unknown."
"However, if this grading system were applied to Earth in your original Universe 616, about twelve people might qualify as Omega-level mutants."
"For example, the original host of the Phoenix Force within Zane—Jean Grey—is one of the most prominent examples."
"As well as Professor X, with his immense psychic abilities, and his lifelong nemesis, Magneto."
Skynet, sitting nearby, listened and skeptically asked:
"According to what you're saying, everyone on this planet should carry the X-gene as mutants."
"But based on my observations and scans, it's clear that not everyone fits this description. The vast majority appear to be ordinary people with no abilities and no trace of the X-gene."
"Actually," Roma replied, "this is because members of the Celestials, part of 'Destiny,' had previously spread the X-gene once on Earth in the main universe."
"So, when they migrated to this Ultimate Universe, they modified the X-gene based on their prior experience."
"After a long process of human evolution, the X-gene gradually lost its dominant traits. It can no longer be detected by instruments, nor does it make its host appear different from birth."
"Instead, the gene requires certain stimuli deemed necessary by 'Destiny' to trigger its activation, much like a mutation. Only then does it grant the host unique superhuman abilities."
"Some individuals might carry the X-gene their entire lives and yet never develop any powers."
As Roma finished, the group nodded in sudden understanding.
Zane, however, already knew this.
Back when the massive Celestials descended upon the Ultimate Universe's Earth and unleashed apocalyptic disasters, Zane's [Divine Realm] had already collected nearly all the souls of the planet's deceased humans.
Although Zane didn't immediately transform these souls or extract their memory energy like others, his innate sensitivity to soul forms made it clear to him that these people were distinctly different—mutant humans.
At this point, Jasper, hearing Roma describe him as a top-tier Omega-level mutant, grinned mischievously and leaned in closer.
Before he could speak, Roma silently raised her dark gold journal, prompting his translucent soul to zip through the walls straight into the cockpit at the front of the plane, not reappearing for a long time.
After a layover, the flight's cabin became even more crowded than before.
At the airport, Zane's group noticed many people rushing through the terminal, lugging large amounts of luggage as if migrating en masse.
Zane exchanged a knowing smile with Lorna. They understood:
Although Lorna had corrected the Ultimate Universe 1610's Earth back to its normal timeline, narrowly avoiding an apocalypse, the populace, influenced by earlier Mayan prophecies, still scrambled to relocate their families to perceived safe zones.
After realizing nothing catastrophic happened, many rushed back home to reclaim their belongings before outsiders could occupy their abandoned homes.
Of course, no matter what preparations these people made, without Lorna and Zane's intervention, their fate would have been total extinction, as depicted on Skynet's earlier broadcast.
This stark contrast between lively survival and utter annihilation left Zane deeply contemplative. Whether ordinary humans or superpowered mutants, all were powerless before the exterminating force of higher-dimensional beings.
He thought to himself that if he hadn't left Earth back then and worked tirelessly to build up his strength, he too might have been effortlessly destroyed by the Celestials during their sudden descent.
At that moment, he recalled what Uatu had mentioned: the Celestials had descended upon Earth in the main universe four times as well.
