Marvel: DNF Invades

Chapter 53: Chapter 53

"I need an explanation!"

Nick Fury's face darkened, his expression grim.

He and his agents had been knocked unconscious without even realizing it.

If word got out, S.H.I.E.L.D. would be humiliated—though that was the least of his worries. What concerned him more was whether Luke had done something. Why would Luke suddenly turn hostile when they had been talking peacefully just moments ago?

What the hell was this kid up to?

The other agents were all waiting for Fury to negotiate with Luke. They felt like they had lost fragments of their memories, each to a varying degree.

Black Widow and the others were just as confused. Luke's actions were undoubtedly provocative.

But based on what she had learned about him over the past ten days, Black Widow felt this wasn't like him. While he was bold, everything Luke did had always served a clear purpose.

And yet, she couldn't see how this benefited him at all.

"What are you talking about?" Luke looked bewildered. "I don't know what happened. I just fell asleep. Isn't this S.H.I.E.L.D.'s doing?"

He showed a hint of displeasure. "Are you trying to knock me out and take me away?"

Fury frowned, suspicion flashing in his eye. "This wasn't your doing?"

"Of course not!"

Luke denied it without hesitation. "Why would I do that? What good would it do me to knock all of you out?"

Even if he were beaten to death, he wouldn't admit it!

He couldn't betray Ross, so he played dumb, pretending he had been a victim too.

Fury studied Luke for a long moment but couldn't detect any sign of dishonesty.

Was it really not him?

His doubts wavered.

Just then, Black Widow pressed a hand to her earpiece, listening intently. A look of shock crossed her face.

She turned to Fury, visibly surprised.

"What is it?" Fury asked.

Black Widow's tone turned serious. "I just got intel from Agent Hill. A fifth of New York's population fainted at the same time as us. The timing matches exactly."

Fury's single eye widened. "What did you say? It wasn't just us? You're saying one-fifth of New York's population blacked out like we did?!"

"Yes," Black Widow confirmed. "Hill says the affected area is centered here in Queens. Cause unknown."

Luke's mouth fell open in surprise.

Ross...

While Fury was still processing the information, he quickly realized the severity of the situation.

New York had a population of around ten million.

That meant nearly two million people had lost consciousness at the same time.

What the hell happened?!

Fury no longer suspected Luke. This wasn't something he was capable of pulling off.

His mind immediately ran through the possibilities.

The two most plausible explanations:

One, it was a large-scale terrorist attack.

Two, it was the work of a super-powered individual.

"What's the latest from the mutants?" Fury asked, his voice sharp.

"No updates yet," Black Widow replied, shaking her head.

Fury's expression darkened.

He decided to contact Professor Charles. This kind of powerful mind control could only be achieved by the most elite mutants.

Maybe something had happened to Charles himself.

Poor Professor X had no idea he was about to get dragged into this mess while sitting quietly in his wheelchair at home.

He had absolutely nothing to do with this!

With a crisis of this scale unfolding, Fury no longer had time to argue with Luke.

They finalized an agreement: within a week, fifty kilograms of adamantium alloy would be delivered to Luke.

In return, Fury would have the right to call on Luke for three missions.

Luke could decline, but if he refused more than once, future cooperation would be off the table.

However, if their collaboration went well, S.H.I.E.L.D. would offer him more adamantium in the future.

The message was clear—Fury was hiring him.

Luke had fought for this deal.

When Fury had subtly pushed for him to consider joining S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke had played along, saying he'd think about it.

But the moment Fury put an employment contract on the table, Luke agreed without hesitation.

In Fury's eyes, Luke was a rebellious kid—just like Tony Stark.

The only difference?

Unlike Tony, Luke was willing to work for money.

That was a relief.

Tony, on the other hand, was an uncontrollable headache.

Even adamantium couldn't tempt him—he had his own ways of getting it.

While he hadn't managed to recruit Luke directly, Fury was satisfied. It was a good start.

"Oh, and one more thing," Luke said as Fury was about to leave. "Don't mix in too much secondary adamantium. Otherwise, I'll be very, very disappointed in you."

Pure adamantium was virtually indestructible.

Secondary adamantium, however, was a weaker version created by the U.S. military as a cost-effective alternative. It sacrificed durability for mass production.

Even so, it was still much stronger than titanium alloy.

Secondary adamantium could withstand most attacks, but under extreme force, it could still bend or break.

The only reason Hulk and Thor had ever destroyed adamantium was because they had been dealing with the secondary version—not the real deal.

Fury, who had just reached the door, nearly tripped.

This kid even knows that?!

Where the hell did he get this information?!

Fury felt a sudden headache coming on.

After watching S.H.I.E.L.D.'s team hastily drive away, Luke turned back toward the warehouse.

"Christina, I want the latest news."

When his assistant pulled up reports from the outside world, Luke was left completely speechless.

Ross...

You really know how to make a scene.

The entire world was already in an uproar.

This bizarre incident—where nearly all of Queens had fallen unconscious at the same time—was dominating the internet.

The media had already dubbed it the "Queens Mysterious Sleeping Case."

Approximately two million people had lost consciousness within four minutes.

This led to tens of thousands of traffic accidents in just that short period. Other disasters followed, overwhelming hospitals citywide.

Panicked citizens flooded New York's government offices, demanding an explanation.

Major news networks, both local and international, were covering the incident non-stop.

The NYPD was stretched beyond its limits. The government remained silent. New York's hospitals were bursting at the seams.

According to preliminary estimates, traffic accidents alone had caused over 100,000 casualties in just those four minutes. The full extent of the damage was still being calculated.

The economic losses?

Incalculable.

What had caused this mass blackout?

Speculation ran wild.

Conspiracy theorists insisted it was the U.S. military testing a new weapon.

Some believed aliens were behind it, knocking everyone out to abduct humans.

A particularly passionate woman swore on live TV that her cousin's uncle's aunt had been taken by aliens.

Meanwhile, a group of hackers issued a statement blaming mutants.

They claimed the U.S. government had been secretly dealing with mutants and was hiding the bigger truth from the public.

This hacker collective vowed to expose the government's conspiracies.

They called themselves—

Rising Tide.
