Bear necessities (171)
The cold wind crashed against the outer wall of the city of Frostvale, the sounds audibly heard by anyone in a close proximity.
The snowfall had kicked into another gear recently, nearly double the normal amount falling from the sky at any given moment. It continued to pile onto the ground, creating mountains of frostbite. Now, it was impossible to see anywhere in front of you, if you had to travel then you had to pray that there would be nothing in your way to stop you.
About a kilometer away from the gate to the city, an oversized bear was slowly trotting through the snow, each of its paws sinking into the thick cold before it could take another step.
The bear was pure white and was quite a bit larger than the average polar bear, about double the size. The white horn on its forehead was also a way that you could tell that it wasn't an average polar bear.
The horn was about half a meter long and curved in a strange way. The bear looked like a strange hybrid between a rhino and a polar bear.
Each step the bear took made the snow in the surrounding area tremble as its paws sunk into it. It was looking for its next meal, and it was hungry.
Sadly, the bear had no idea that it was about to possibly become a meal itself.
And that was all due to the two figures hidden in the snow that it just stepped over.
"Now."
That one word was all the preparation that one of the men needed to spring into action. The figure quickly threw the white cloak it was using to camouflage away and thrust their steel blade up into the stomach of the bear.
The blade managed to plunge itself into the outer bit of flesh, but the fur was too thick for the sword to make it through and deal any meaningful damage.
Instantly, the bear let out a roar as it began stomping the ground, trying to crush whatever had stabbed it beneath its weight.
However, the being that had stabbed it had already rolled away from the underbelly of the beast, having pulled out their sword beforehand.
Kai cursed as he quickly stood up. He had to squint just to keep his eyes on the bear, the snow was just too damn annoying.
He hadn't managed to stick his loaned sword far enough into the bear's belly, so he was already off to a bad start.
"Remember, be on guard, don't show any weakness."
Kai held back a scowl as he listened to Ezekial's words. This was the fourth bear the swordsman had made him fight in the last week, and he never offered any help, only repeating that one piece of advice at the start of every fight.
And to make matters even worse, while Kai was struggling to see and remain standing under the constant onslaught of snow, Ezekial just stood there with his arms crossed, his face calm and his stance unwavering. You wouldn't even think that he was standing in the middle of a blizzard. It looked like he was in a nice winter snowfall rather than a blizzard, the snow sticking to his light blue hair only increasing how attractive he looked.
Not having the time to respond to Ezekial, Kai turned back to the bear just as it realised where its attacker had gone. Inwardly cursing, Kai prepared himself just as the bear let out a roar and charged at him.
One thing that people did not know was that while hippos were a large animal and looked incredible slow, they could actually run at forty kilometres an hour, a speed that was bound to catch anyone off guard.
And much like the average hippo, these rhino bears were also incredibly quick.
Kai nearly slipped in the snow as he got ready to dodge the bear, but he managed to keep his footing, he had been in this deep snow every day for the last week after all, it would be embarrassing if he was making the same mistakes he made on the first day.
The bear swiped its claws at Kai, to which Kai dodged by simply jumping backwards. It wasn't that he had gotten a lot quicker, it was just that he was already preparing to dodge before the bear attacked. He had already nearly gotten mauled fighting bear number two, and Ezekial had to step in to save him from losing an arm in the bear's mouth, something that he would rather not go through again.
Angry that its prey had avoided its attack, the bear let out another roar and charged at Kai again.
Only this time it wasn't going to try and maul it's prey with its claws, no, it was going to try and impale its prey on its horn.
Kai inwardly cursed as he mentally prepared himself for what he was about to do. He had no idea why he had to do this, but Ezekial always gave out when Kai tried to dodge this attack normally. The blue haired swordsman kept saying that it was impossible for someone like him to dodge normally, that the bear would simply maul Kai as soon as it realised that it had missed, so the only way for Kai to avoid this attack was to-
Shit!
Kai let out a grunt as he blocked the bear's horn with the body of his blade. He felt his bones tremble and his arms quiver as he was sent flying backwards from the force of the impact. He was in the air for a solid second before he finally hit the snowy ground and rolled a couple of times before quickly jumping up and readying himself for round two.
He threw a quick glance at Ezekial, who gave him a nod of approval. From bears one through to the current number four, Ezekial kept trying get Kai to pull of this manoeuvre, even though Kai didn't want to. This was the first time he had actually managed to pull it off, so the blue haired swordsman was actually pleased.
Still, Kai couldn't help but feel a little bitter that he had to turn into a human ragdoll for a reason that still hadn't been explained to him.
Once back on his feet, Kai quickly performed his wrist exercises, twirling them and moving them in the way that the author of the book he read had told him to do. The book had ended up actually being incredibly useful, with the training he had done with his wrists, he had a bunch more possible ways to attack and even more possibilities when it came to defending.
Even though the book was called Wristology and was all about wrists, it also had some passive effects on Kai's fingers and hand in general, it offered him a higher level of control, and in return more offensive and defensive capabilities.
After preparing his wrists, Kai's grip on the steel sword he had been loaned tightened. Even though he had fought three bears before this one, he had never actually won, Ezekial always had to step in at the last moment because Kai made a mistake.
Attempt three had been the closest, but the error Kai made was not launching himself with the impact from the bear's charge. He had dodged it normally, but Ezekial instantly stepped in and killed the bear, saying that Kai could been seriously injured otherwise.
But that was last attempt, and Kai always believed that four was his lucky number.
... He had said the same thing about three, but that was in the past, a whole day ago, times change after all.
By now, the bear was probably seeing red, even though it was white all around it.
It charged again, only this time its fur started to stand on its back and its horn started to glow whiter than it already was.
Kai saw Ezekial's expression change in the corner of his eye, and just as he knew that the blue haired swordsman was about to step in, Kai wagged a finger at him.
"Ah ah, let me try and kill it first."
Ezekial's eyes widened slightly, unsure of what Kai was planning, but he simply nodded and rested a hand on the hilt of his sword.
"If that is what you wish."
Taking a deep breath, Kai kept an eye on the bear as it charged. The bear's horn continued to glow brighter and brighter. The snow falling around the horn started to react to it, the snow starting to condense into a small ball.
It was only after the bear's horn stopped glowing that Kai realised he fucked up.
"Shi-"
Quickly figuring out the quickest route to the ground, Kai gave up control of all his limbs and fell down, crashing onto the soft snow under him.
Not even a second later, a ball of pure white light shot past where he stood, traveling much quicker than he would have been able to dodge. The screeching sound that accompanied the ball started to grow quieter and quieter until it eventually became a loud bang as it crashed into something deep into the blizzard that Kai couldn't even see.
Now, Kai began to understand why he should try and keep his distance from the bear, as he had never seen that attack before in all his previous attempts.
Rising back to his feet, Kai pushed himself forward and started charging at the bear. An attack like that was always accompanied by some sort of internal cooldown, so he probably had a couple seconds of safety to make use of.
The bear roared again, only this time the roar made Kai flinch because of how loud it was. Kai felt his hearing go as he got closer, so he decided to just go all in.
The bear lifted itself onto its two back legs and swiped its claws in an X shape, hoping to catch Kai in its sharp embrace.
Only Kai did something that neither the bear nor Ezekial expected.
He simply threw his sword at the bear's face.
While Ezekial was shocked, the bear did not stop its attack. Even though the body of the sword was blocking its vision, its claws were just about to catch its prey-
In the next moment, the sword that was blocking the bear's vision suddenly moved, revealing a red haired boy that had somehow reached the same height as the massive bear on its back legs.
Before the bear could react, Kai spun his body and cut both of the beasts eyes, making it cry out in pain. The bear then fell down to the ground, blood spilling down its pure white face.
Then, it felt two boots land on top of its head, and it inwardly knew that was coming.
The next moment, Kai tensed his arms and plunged his sword through the bears head before delivering a cool one liner.
"Rawr."
