Ch. 0 - Prologue
“Meldor, you are the one and only heir of our Alton family and the eldest son. Always feel the weight of responsibility and never forget the burden of your position.”
“Yes, Father! I will keep this in mind!”
‘This disgusting farewell is taking forever.’
Despite my sarcastic inner thoughts, I maintained a smile.
After a long time of offering encouragement and advice to Meldor, Father finally looked at me.
“Belladi.”
“Yes, Father.”
Father looked at me in silence for a moment, as if he didn’t know what to say.
I simply gazed back at his ruby-like red eyes.
After a brief pause, he finally managed to say a single sentence.
“You won’t cause much worry.”
Compared to what he said to Meldor, it was a very concise farewell.
Meldor, standing next to me, snickered. I ignored him and smiled even more warmly.
“Of course, Father. As the
Father didn’t respond further and mounted his horse.
“We will depart now.”
“Yes, Duke!”
At Father’s command, the waiting soldiers opened the massive iron gates.
Clang-
As the gates opened, Father led a group of knights who had packed lightly, and they spurred their horses.
Dust rose early in the morning, and the wild manes of the black horses ridden by the knights fluttered fiercely. They galloped away, soon becoming black dots in the distance.
‘Goodbye, Father. I hope you stay in the north for a long, long time.’
While bidding him farewell in my heart, I heard Meldor mumbling.
“Firstborn, my foot.”
I looked down at Meldor. My cute little brother, now twelve years old, was tall and sturdy, true to the Alton family bloodline.
Of course, being of the same blood, I was also taller than average, so I could still look down at Meldor. He didn’t seem to like that, as he pursed his lips and glared at me.
“What do you think you can manage?”
I didn’t respond and simply looked at Meldor. He continued to snicker at me, unaware of my gaze.
“You think you’re something just because Father isn’t here. Don’t get cocky and stay out of trouble. If you stay quiet, you might manage half, but don’t cause any accidents.”
With that, Meldor strode into the mansion.
I followed him quietly, listening to his continued taunts.
“Do you even know how to do anything? All you ever do is go out with friends or go shopping.”
In one sentence, my little brother could be described like this.
‘Our little prince, spoiled and ill-mannered from being raised like a flower in a greenhouse.’
But that ended today. With Father gone for a long time, the little prince’s protector would be absent.
I followed Meldor to his room, listening to his chatter. Just then, a maid approached quietly and whispered so only I could hear.
“The teleportation array to the north has been activated.”
The activation of the teleportation array meant that Father had left the capital completely.
“Do not approach this room until I call for you.”
The maid bowed politely and left Meldor’s room. As soon as she closed the door, I locked it.
Click.
Only then did Meldor, who had been prattling on, realize something was amiss and looked at me.
“What are you doing? I warned you, now get out. Unlike you, I’m busy.”
“Meldor.”
I looked into his eyes, which were the same blue as our mother’s, still innocent.
“Like you said, I don’t have much to do.”
As I spoke, I approached Meldor. Startled, he backed away and bumped into the desk behind him.
“So, I think it’s time to properly discipline this spoiled little puppy.”
“… what did you just say?”
Meldor’s voice trembled slightly.
“First, I should teach you the word
I reached out and turned on Meldor’s gramophone. Soon, the symphony he enjoyed with Mother started playing.
I turned up the volume to its maximum.
“What are you doing! Get out of my room right now!”
Sensing danger too late, Meldor pushed my shoulder hard.
Of course, I didn’t budge.
“W-What. You didn’t even move…?”
With shaking eyes, Meldor looked at his hand and then at me. I looked back at him, smiling kindly.
“Yes, my dear brother. You’re probably overflowing with energy, acting so recklessly, right? Let’s drain some of that energy first.”
“Ugh! Don’t come closer! I said don’t come closer!”
And that evening, in the Alton mansion with Father gone.
“Ahhhhhh-! Sister! Sister! I was wrong! I was wrong!”
A desperate scream, barely muffled by the rough violin notes, echoed throughout the mansion.
