Chapter 7
The moment Xiao Liu fell into the river, he suddenly woke up and began to struggle violently.
Shi Yi felt the frigid river water surround him from all directions. However, being inexperienced with water, he couldn’t swim or save himself. Instead, he clung to Xiao Liu to avoid being carried away by the rushing currents, even as the river’s icy grip slowly numbed him, he couldn’t let Xiao Liu go.
Xiao Liu’s body grew limp, his heart growing colder by the second.
As they teetered on the brink of death, a sudden surge of strength from an unknown source seized them, pulling them to the surface.
“Ouch, it’s here.”
The cacophonous voices of the onlookers filled their ears, creating a chaotic soundscape.
Shi Yi struggled to inhale the fresh air; his thoughts consumed by what would become of Pei Xing if he were to die at this very moment. That man would go crazy again.
Someone in the crowd suddenly shouted, “I think this little one might not make it; his face is pale.”
Shi Yi, desperate, shoved aside the man holding onto Shi Liu and laid his brother flat on the ground. He began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation repeatedly.
The bystanders, witnessing Shi Yi’s efforts to revive his brother, mistook it for hysteria. “Oh, I think he’s gone mad.”
“Are you crazy? Go call a doctor; maybe he can still be saved.”
A man who had helped rescue them looked at Shi Yi with furrowed brows, wanting to intervene. However, a well-dressed individual beside him restrained him.
Just the man wondered why his young master stopped him, he heard a faint cough nearby.
To everyone’s astonishment, the child had regained consciousness.
Shi Liu softly called for his brother, threw himself into Shi Yi’s arms, and began to cry.
Shi Yi hugged him tightly and consoled him repeatedly, saying, “Don’t be afraid, third brother is here.”
The crowd of onlookers marveled at the heartwarming scene.
Finally, Shi Yi had a moment to express his gratitude to the person who had rescued them. The rescuer was clad in a black suit with wide sleeves and two silver wristbands. He possessed a strong, imposing presence, along with handsome, sharply defined features.
The young man in the brocade clothes beside him appeared to be of Hu origin, with striking azure eyes that glinted in the sunlight. He had fair skin and delicate, exotic facial features.
Shi Yi was aware that these two individuals likely held significant status. He extended his heartfelt thanks to them and comforted Xiao Liu until he had calmed down.
In the crowd, Shi Yi spotted several individuals wearing official uniforms who were escorting three people.
Two of them were the middle-aged man and woman who had previously attacked him, while the third was another middle-aged man. Shi Yi was seething with anger as he clung to Xiao Liu.
These three individuals had worked together to try to kill him and silence any witnesses, displaying a malicious intent that was difficult to comprehend.
“You’re lower than pigs or dogs. Calling you beasts is an insult to the actual beasts.” Shi Yi exclaimed as he hugged Xiao Liu, attempting to kick the man. However, his weakened state resulted in a feeble kick that had little deterrent effect.
The middle-aged man looked at him with disdain, his eyes radiating evil intentions. To Shi Yi, it felt as if a cold, slimy serpent was slithering over his body, making him shudder with disgust.
.
At this moment, Wen Jun was tending to the injured on the ship and remained unaware of the dire situation that Shi Yi had fallen into.
Pei Xing, on the other hand, had been growing increasingly worried about Shi Yi. He had rushed back to the shopping area and, upon seeing a crowd gathered, had a foreboding feeling. He pushed his way through the onlookers and found Shi Yi, completely soaked, still holding Xiao Liu in his arms.
Upon spotting Shi Yi, Pei Xing’s heart tightened. He approached and embraced him without hesitation, concern etched across his face. Before he could inquire about the situation, he noticed that half of Shi Yi’s face was red and swollen, clearly indicating that he had been slapped with considerable force.
Shi Yi, suddenly held by Pei Xing, was startled at first. However, the sight of Pei Xing quickly eased his anxiety, and he let out a sigh of relief. It was at this moment that he realized just how much he depended on Pei Xing, and he felt a slight embarrassment as he averted his eyes, his face burning from the pain on the side where he had been slapped.
Pei Xing’s eyes narrowed as he fought to suppress the anger surging within him. In a deep, calm voice, he asked, “What happened to your face?”
Shi Yi didn’t know what to say; he felt a sense of embarrassment. Almost losing his life while out shopping, and then being pushed to the ground, beaten, and kicked had left him at a loss for words.
He remained silent as the concerned onlookers around him began sharing the details of the incident.
“Son, that’s your wife, isn’t it? Oh, who allows their shuanger to roam the streets alone with a child? If they hadn’t been saved, both your wife and child would have drowned in the river. You’re fortunate we were here.”
“That’s right. The world is a dangerous place these days. If they were kidnapped, it would be impossible to find them.”
“Indeed, a family in our village lost their child once.”
“They were never able to find him.”
“And he was just a little boy.”
The lively discussion carried on as the curious crowd debated various opinions. The topic had already shifted far from the incident at hand, and people continued to chatter with great interest.
At first, Shi Yi felt embarrassed, but now, his thoughts were consumed by the gossip that everyone had dug up. He couldn’t help but wonder about his second brother, who had also been abducted, and whose whereabouts and fate remained unknown.
