Chapter 2
The next day was the day when Master Fan would come to collect them.
Before dawn, Shi Yi and Shi Liu were moved to a room not far from the woodshed.
The house was constructed with blue bricks and furnished quite modestly, containing a large bed, two substantial wooden chests, and a round table. On the table sat two bowls of porridge, and a large wooden bucket filled with hot water was placed nearby.
After finishing their meal, Shi Yi had a brief conversation with the Xiao Liu. He explained his escape plan, provided some instructions, and then took a comfortable bath with the child. He felt as though he had shed three kilograms of weight, and after the bath, they both changed into festive red brocade clothing, prepared for the upcoming wedding.
Subsequently, they sat by the bed, with Shi Yi holding the child, waiting quietly for the wedding procession to arrive.
.
The early morning sun was just breaking through the sky, and the popping sound of firecrackers shattered the tranquility of He Village like a bolt of lightning.
He Village was located near Yun Fu College.
In the Dayu Dynasty, Yun Fu College was one of the examination sites for the annual national exams.
The day they were to be picked up coincided with the third day after the provincial exams, and candidates from all over the country were making their way home.
Given that the Zibo River flowed through both Yun Fu College and He Village, candidates and students traveling from various places often rested in the village. Some families in He Village saw this as an opportunity to earn some extra money.
Those with well-constructed houses might even meet students from wealthier families, and the money they earned could cover a significant portion of their annual income.
A few days ago, the village head and his family had welcomed a group of such visitors. Their eldest son had gotten married the previous month, and their newly built seven-room blue brick house with large tiles was ideal for hosting such guests.
It was Pei Xing and his group; they had encountered trouble on their journey to He Village. One of the four servants who accompanied them had died, another was seriously injured and unconscious, and the remaining two were also badly hurt.
They hadn’t been in a hurry to return after the exam, so they stayed in the village for a few additional days. During this time, Pei Xing had been hunting every morning and had a successful catch today, bagging a small wild boar.
The village head and his family were overjoyed upon seeing the catch. In the past, meat was typically only eaten during the New Year and special occasions, but lately, it had become a regular part of their meals.
“Brother Pei, you are quite skilled. We’ve been relying on you these past few days,” remarked Lu Chao. Dressed in fine brocade clothing and a white jade crown, he held a sapphire fan, exuding the appearance of a refined gentleman.
Pei Xing, however, paid him no mind, unloading the game and giving it to the village head before returning to his room to change into clean attire.
Lu Chao followed closely and asked, “Hey, Brother Zhou and Brother Song heard the firecrackers early this morning and went to join the celebrations. Brother Pei, we should also partake to bring us good luck and dispel misfortune. This journey has been truly arduous.”
“Aren’t you having a good times these days?” Pei Xing said and continued with his chores, ignoring Lu Chao’s comments. He fetched water from the courtyard and started washing the soiled clothes.
Lu Chao playfully tapped his nose with the fan, a hint of a mischievous smile on his face. “Junjun finally agreed to marry me; it was just a momentary lapse of control. The date has already been set; it will be on the seventh day of next month. Whether it’s sooner or later, something is bound to happen.”
They had a heated argument the previous day, and they didn’t sleep until late at night. But Zhou Yan and Song Ning’s room were separated by a wall from them.
While Pei Xing’s room was located in the northwest corner of the house, across Lu Chao’s room which was in the southeast corner, of the large courtyard.
The reason Pei Xing knew all this was because Zhou Yan had exchanged some bitter words with him when he woke up early to hunt.
“Alright, let’s go enjoy the festivities together,” Pei Xing finally responded.
