Chapter 15
Shi Yi was surprised by Hong Luo’s mature speech. It seemed that children in ancient times grew up quickly.
To pass the time, Shi Yi decided to explore the house.
The house was situated with its front facing north and south, featuring hallways on both sides that led to the backyard. In the backyard, a grape trellis hung heavy with ripe grapes.
He picked a grape and tasted it. It was slightly sour. He considered turning it into wine or making juice with it.
Apart from Aunt Hong and Shi Liu’s room, there were two sealed rooms in the backyard. Shi Yi couldn’t see inside to determine their contents.
The house was spacious but not very large. In the front yard, aside from the room Shi Yi stayed in yesterday, there was a kitchen next to it. There was also a study where it was used to write and reading. The remaining space was a lobby for entertaining guests.
.
Pei Xing successfully registered the two shuangers in the county government and then visited his shop. Officially, the shop belonged to Lu Chao, but Pei Xing managed it almost entirely. The shop was divided into three parts.
One section of the shop, spanning more than 30 square meters, sold study-related materials like pens, inks, paper, and inkstones. The other two sections were expanded and transformed into a restaurant named Baiwei Building, occupying over 80 square meters. This restaurant, consisting of a three-story building, catered to middle- and upper-class patrons. The remaining space, called Hansu Square, spanned more than 20 square meters and offered special fruit drinks and various small pastries at affordable prices to attract a broad customer base.
Pei Xing proceeded to the backyard, summoned Zhou Hua, inquired about recent developments, and reviewed the account books. Zhou Hua had joined Pei Xing’s venture two years ago and signed a 30-year contract. Although he had only received limited education in his youth, he was capable of reading and writing. After his father’s passing and his mother’s illness, the family’s livelihood rested on his shoulders.
Over the past two years, Zhou Hua had learned a great deal from Pei Xing, leading to increased earnings and improved living conditions. Last year, after getting married, he received a house in the county from Pei Xing as a gift. Zhou Hua admired and was grateful to Pei Xing.
Upon reviewing the account books, Pei Xing found them to be in good order with no issues. Since the Mid-Autumn Festival was approaching, he explained some upcoming plans to Zhou Hua.
“Tomorrow, deliver the new play scripts to Yao Lou and have him select new actors to perform at the restaurant. Also, promote the upcoming promotional events and the new dishes at Baiwei Building” Pei Xing handed over a list of scheduled tasks.
Then, he lowered his head and jotted down another list. “After purchasing the items on this list, have them delivered directly to my home, including the wine.”
Zhou Hua, puzzled by the list, noticed it primarily contained food supplements, some children’s toys, and various fabrics.
Why would Pei Xing order such luxurious items like cloud silk, flowing satin, and floating brocade, each of which could cost up to a hundred taels?
Zhou Hua wondered whether Pei Xing had become unusually extravagant. Furthermore, the nature of these items suggested they were typically used by women and shuangers. The presence of Aunt Hong and Hong Luo in the house raised questions about this purchase. It didn’t make sense for them, so Zhou Hua couldn’t help but wonder if Pei Xing planned to find a wife.
Zhou Hua, though harboring doubts, was a man of diligence and didn’t question Pei Xing’s instructions. He acted promptly to buy the items specified on the list.
After Pei Xing explained it, he went to the clothing store to search around then buy some snacks. He carried large and small bags then set off to go back home.
.
Upon arriving, he noticed that Shi Yi was absent. Aunt Hong informed him that Shi Yi had gone fishing with Zhou Yan. Although Pei Xing frowned, Aunt Hong reassured him that Song Ning had also joined them, suggesting that everything would be fine. Nevertheless, Pei Xing was far from at ease, given Shi Yi’s temperament and unfamiliarity with the village’s dynamics. He chose to check on them.
Xiangshan Village boasted fertile lands and relatively prosperous living conditions. With Pei Xing’s leadership, the villagers started growing strawberries and established fruit orchards. They even built a handicraft workshop for producing spices and soap. The wealth of the village had significantly improved, and villagers led a comfortable life.
The recent lavish wedding of Chu Nan who spent a lot to marry his wife, had stirred envy and rumors within the village.
There was a wealthy family where a concubine gave birth to shuanger. The mother died while giving birth to him and his status in the family was low. He suffered a lot and offended the madam. He was going to be sell outside but met Chu Nan who was going to Fucheng.
Chu Nan begged his father to spent money and buy the shuanger back for one hundred taels. Pei Xing learned this thing from his chat with Chu Nan.
People in the village didn’t care about these things. they only treated the shuanger as if he was bought from a brothel. Everyone was bullying and Chu Nan taught several families a lesson, then the village calmed down.
Pei Xing had only brought Shi Yi home the previous day, and he didn’t yet have a formal status or reputation in the village. He was concerned about potential rumors and gossip circulating regarding his relationship with Shi Yi.
.
Meanwhile, Shi Yi was engaged in an escalating confrontation at the fishing spot. He aimed at a man named Zhu Laosan, who had a reputation in the village as a notorious gambler and alcoholic.
“You bastard, trash. Fuck you.” Shi Yi had had enough of Zhu Laosan’s inappropriate remarks. He hurled the fish basket toward the group of men who had been taunting him. The fish basket soared in a graceful arc, landing squarely in the midst of the man with the sharpest tongue and a skinny face.
This unlucky man was named Zhu Fu, often called Zhu Laosan by the villagers. He was infamous for his gambling and playboy style. While his luck in gambling was incredibly poor, he had managed to win big on several occasions, amassing considerable wealth. It was said that nine times out of ten, he would lose, leading him to accumulate debt.
But Zhu Laosan was unusually lucky, winning nine out of ten times. He not only earned money through gambling, but also secured a wife, acquired property, and used his earnings to sustain a luxurious lifestyle.
Zhu Laosan’s good fortune was a matter of envy. Not only had he visited the brothels in Fucheng, but he had also encountered the famous courtesans from the city’s pleasure quarters.
Those courtesans couldn’t even compare to this person in front of Zhu Laosan. The key was this shuanger not only good-looking but his eyes were very attractive and the hot temper was very good.
He didn’t know which man brought him back but they didn’t protect this person well enough, even he encountered this beautiful thing.
Zhu Laosan laughed heartily when the fish basket hit him. Made of bamboo and lightweight, it caused no harm. He looked at Shi Yi with lecherous eyes, seemingly undeterred by the basket’s impact.
“Hahaha, that didn’t hurt at all, beauty,” Zhu Laosan laughed and leered at Shi Yi. He held the fish basket up to his nose, inhaling deeply. With an exaggerated look of enjoyment on his face, he commented, “Smells so good! Even better than the girl I spent the night with at the brothel.”
Shi Yi seethed with frustration as he endured Zhu Laosan’s lewd comments and gestures. He wished he could give him a piece of his mind a thousand times over.
“Beauty, why throw things at me when you can hit my third leg with your own lovely hands?” Zhu Laosan leered, stretching out his chest as he pointed at himself. “I like it when pretty young things like you slap me. Those delicate, soft hands, oh, they’re so exciting…”
His vulgar remarks elicited disgust from some of the onlookers, with one person finally unable to bear it and cursed at Zhu Laosan.
“You are so shameless, Zhu Laosan.”
Even as they scolded him, their eyes remained fixated on Shi Yi.
“Hey, Zhu Laosan always been like this.”
