Chapter 10
After the doctor examined Shi Yi’s condition and provided some advice, he prescribed medication to help him recover. Although there were no internal injuries, Shi Yi’s overall health was quite weak, and he needed rest and care.
As Lu Chao and his companions returned from their trip and learned about Shi Yi’s condition, they came to visit. However, they didn’t stay long, as they saw that Shi Yi was asleep.
During the night, Shi Yi indeed developed a fever, and Pei Xing followed the doctor’s instructions, repeatedly wiping his body with strong alcohol. However, his temperature remained high. In his desperation, Pei Xing remembered the Huiming Pills and Golden Marrow Pills he had brought along. He quickly dissolved two pills in water and fed them to Shi Yi.
In this world, these medicines were considered highly valuable and almost miraculous. They were primarily used by martial artists, but they also had remarkable effects when used by ordinary people. The Huiming Pill, in particular, was known for its ability to revive people from life-threatening situations.
As he held Shi Yi’s warm body close, Pei Xing’s heart was filled with anxiety. Just a few days after they had met, Shi Yi was lying there unconscious. It felt as if a part of him was missing, leaving a deep void, similar to the emptiness he had experienced after crossing over six years ago.
.
The next day, around noon, Shi Yi woke up. The sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the room. The previously dim space was now much brighter.
Seeing him wake up, Song Ning quickly handed him a glass of water.
Shi Yi accepted the glass and drank it rapidly, soothing his parched throat. He asked in a hoarse voice, “Where is Pei Xing?”
“Brother Pei went out for something,” Song Ning replied. Following Pei Xing’s instructions, he had dissolved the Golden Marrow Pill in the water that Shi Yi had just consumed.
Shi Yi was unaware of the medication in this glass of water and only noticed that it tasted slightly sweeter than the previous glass.
As the tea-like liquid traveled down his throat and into his lungs, it felt like a gentle and warm breeze that swept away the sense of fatigue and exhaustion, leaving him invigorated. His mind felt clearer, as if he had absorbed the spiritual energy of the heavens and the earth.
Shi Yi quickly drank a few more glasses of water but only found them to be plain and nothing special, except for quenching his thirst.
He assumed he was simply thirsty and didn’t think much about it.
Thinking that he might have been disoriented from sleep, Shi Yi took Song Ning to the deck to get some fresh air.
The ship was a large merchant vessel owned by the Bai family, traveling from north to south. The deck was spacious, providing about 20 square meters of space for passengers to gather and socialize. People were chatting in groups, discussing interesting things they had seen along the journey.
When Zhou Yan spotted them, he enthusiastically waved them over and invited them to join the group.
Seeing a chessboard among the three or five people, Shi Yi waved his hand to indicate that he wasn’t interested.
Song Ning appeared to be quite fond of playing chess, his eyes shining with enthusiasm as he squatted next to Zhou Yan, discussing the game with him.
Shi Yi stretched and looked around, taking in the view of rolling green mountains on both sides of the riverbank, dense forests, and the rippling blue waters of the river. Occasionally, painted boats and small vessels glided along the river, creating a picturesque scene.
A sense of emotion welled up inside him, and when he turned around, he saw Pei Xing on the boat’s bow, dressed in a light blue robe. For the past few days, they had experienced various challenges, and he realized that he hadn’t truly appreciated the present, and particularly, Pei Xing.
Pei Xing had grown taller since he last saw him. Among the crowd, he stood head and shoulders above others, with a height of at least 1.95 meters.
His once jet-black hair had transformed into a lighter brown, and he wore a light blue headband atop his head. The overall effect of his appearance was striking, with sharp brows and a strong and appealing facial structure that captured the attention of onlookers.
.
A man standing next to Pei Xing was speaking to him, and Pei Xing appeared slightly displeased, his brows furrowing and his expression turning serious. Shi Yi recognized that expression—it was Pei Xing’s usual demeanor when he was dealing with others while feeling impatient.
Beside Pei Xing stood a woman dressed in white. From her back, she had a graceful figure with hair cascading down to her waist, exuding an aura of elegance and beauty, but her identity was clearly significant.
Before Shi Yi could process this scene, a small dumpling suddenly appeared and wrapped its arms around his leg.
“Third brother, third brother, are you okay?” Xiao Liu looked up at him with concern.
Shi Yi’s heart melted, and he was about to pick Xiao Liu up when a figure in cyan suddenly flashed before his eyes. Shi Liu was picked up by Pei Xing first.
Pei Xing said, “You’re injured, don’t hold him.”
Shi Yi’s heart raced as he felt the intense gaze upon him. He turned his face to the side and glanced towards the river, concealing his flushed cheeks.
“He’s still young; it’s okay to hold him.”
Pei Xing observed Shi Yi’s slightly reddened neck and smiled with warmth in his eyes. He took Shi Yi’s hand and said, “You aren’t in good health, don’t stay out here in the wind.”
“What’s wrong with me? Have I become an old lady? It’s too stuffy inside. I came out for some fresh air.” Shi Yi gave him a dissatisfied look, then pointed at the beautiful scenery in the distance.
“I’ve never seen such pristine and rare natural beauty. I won’t go back.”
Shi Liu remained well-behaved in Pei Xing’s arms. Knowing that his third brother was injured, he refrained from making a fuss. He spoke softly, saying, “This is also my first time on a boat.”
Shi Yi smiled, kissed his fair and tender cheek, and ruffled his hair. “My dear, that’s great. From now on, your third brother will work hard to buy a big ship and take you on journeys around the world.”
Xiao Liu’s face lit up with excitement, and he declared, “I want to bring Brother Pei along too.”
Pei Xing raised his eyebrows and let a small smile grace his lips. This child was indeed quite clever.
“Alright, you can bring anyone you like; my baby will have the final say,” Shi Yi readily agreed.
“There’s also fourth brother; we can all go together when he returns,” Xiao Liu suggested.
Shi Yi felt a twinge of unease, worried about the fourteen-year-old boy. However, he smiled and said, “Alright, when the time comes, I’ll bring our eldest brother and second brother back, and we’ll all go on a family trip together.”
Pei Xing noticed the change in Shi Yi’s expression, understanding that the situation with the previous inhabitant of this body was bothering him. He felt guilty for having to take over this life.
“Don’t worry, from now on, I’ll be here with you, and we’ll find them all together,” Pei Xing assured as he held Shi Yi’s hand tightly.
Shi Yi nodded, and despite the jealousy and resentment he harbored toward Pei Xing in his previous life, he had always held an inexplicable belief in him. This belief remained unchanged to this day. Listening to Pei Xing’s words, he felt a sense of comfort deep within his heart.
.
They stopped worrying about their past grievances and fully immersed themselves in the picturesque scenery. Shi Yi would occasionally tease Xiao Liu, and his innocent laughter lifted their spirits. Shi Yi leaned against the railing, enjoying the beautiful scene.
“Now I can finally understand the lines from those poems…” Shi Yi paused, and his mind went blank, unable to recall any school memorizations. He had read so many ancient poems, but none seemed to capture the beauty before him. After a long silence, he said, “Well, ‘When the sun rises, the river’s flowers are as red as fire, and when spring arrives, the river appears as blue as jade.’ Isn’t that the scene we’re seeing now?”
Pei Xing chuckled and said, “It’s autumn right now, and at noon, the river appears green.”
Shi Yi was in a good mood and didn’t let Pei Xing’s comment bother him. He furrowed his brows, thinking for a while, and then added, “In that case, ‘Under the shimmering water, beauty lies; during misty rain, the mountains turn strange.'”
Pei Xing gently shook his head and said, “It’s neither raining nor misty right now.”
“It’s the picturesque scenery of the southern Yangtze River. We’ll meet again when the flowers fall. Isn’t that fitting?” Shi Yi retorted a bit frustratingly, looking at Pei Xing. “I was just trying to express my feelings, why do you have to nitpick?”
Pei Xing’s gaze shifted slightly, and he looked at Shi Yi’s slightly pouted red lips. He said, “Indeed, it does suit the current situation.”
Shi Yi realized the underlying meaning of Pei Xing’s words, causing his eyes to quiver slightly. He felt his ears grow warm and glared at Pei Xing in irritation.
“What a good poem! What a good poem! I never expected my sister-in-law to be so skilled in literature and capable of composing such exquisite poems.”
Shi Yi was taken aback, slowly turned around, and saw Lu Chao, who was pretending to be amazed. He awkwardly laughed and said, “Hahaha, it’s a misunderstanding, I didn’t write it.”
As for the author, he had already forgotten. It had been five or six years since he had graduated, and he had started a new life here. It wasn’t easy to remember those lines, let alone the title or the author. They had been forgotten over countless lifetimes.
