I suddenly became the villain and I liked it

Listening to rumors

It was a few days before the scavenger hunt. Emilia informed me that the school usually does not inform the students until the day itself. Since the event will only occur within school grounds, the same rule applies to this one. Emilia requested for me to keep it a secret.

“Hey, you.”

As my maid I were going around the school, I hear the voice of red hair. I immediately hid somewhere near and listen in their conversation.

“What’s up?”

I look at them and I am very surprised. Red hair was talking to one of her potential friends. Wait, they were supposed to meet during the scavenger hunt. Not before it.

“You know a lot about the people in school, yeah?”

“Of course! I hear lots of things in around the school. Whatcha wanna know?”

Choosing one of the two gives the female protagonist some change in stats. Since the male friend is stoic and silent, they increase violence while the female friend is more of a social butterfly so they increase compassion. It is still weird that the female protagonist seems to be the one initiating this conversation. They do not really care about other people yet.

“There’s a girl who’s been bothering me for a while and I wanna know things about them.”

“Hoho? You have a crush on them or something? Just so you know, I don’t spread private information!”

“What? Hell no! They’re just annoying me. Also, what do you mean by private information?”

“Meh, things like their three sizes, their home address, if they have lovers and that kind of thing.”

“How do you even know those things?”

“A lot of people talk about a lot of things so it comes with the territory, you see!”

The other girl says so. Hmm, does that mean she knows even things I am hiding? Should I capture her? Something to consider in the future. I will just call her blue hair for now. Or should I call her brown eyes? No, blue hair sounds better.

“Whatever, I don’t really care about that. The one I wanna know about is a noble. They have long silver hair and amethyst eyes, looks good too.”

Oh? Red hair thinks I look good. I think you look good too.

“Oh! I definitely know who that is! You’re talking about the duke’s daughter. A-“

Right before she says my name, red hair stops her.

“Don’t tell me her name. Damn bastard keeps telling me that I have to earn the privilege and some crap like that so no way in hell am I gonna learn hers.”

“That definitely sounds like something she would say.”

“Anyway, you called her a duke’s daughter? Of course she would be a duke’s daughter, that smug face just says it all.”

Suddenly, blue hair grabs red hair’s shoulders.

“Wait, are you saying that she talks to you a lot?”

“Hey, why are you grabbing me so hard? Yeah, she does. Annoys the hell out of me too. Just keeps popping out to bother me out of nowhere.”

Blue hair releases her and she does an eyeglass fixing pose. She does not have glasses.

“Right, let me share with you some information about the duke’s daughter.”

Red hair leans by the window as she listens in. I am keeping myself silent as well.

“The duke is known to be a kind and virtuous man but because of that, he has spoiled his daughter rotten. Rumors say that she is evil, cruel, and vicious. People even say that she killed someone before.”

“Rumors? You got anything concrete? Like real incidents?”

“None. There have been no witnesses nor people stepping out.”

“Wait, if no one talks about it. How the hell does everybody know about it?”

“That right there is the mystery. I did do some digging but no one can provide any incident that proves it. Of course, I could try to ask the person themselves but I can’t just talk to a duke’s daughter and only a few nobles are willing to speak with commoners. I did get to talk to the prince though but he didn’t verify or deny it.”

“Huh. That’s weird, its like someone is just spreading it for no good reason.”

“As a duke’s daughter, she has a lot of enemies so whether its true or false doesn’t matter. People talk about things like this.”

It was my father who spread those rumors. Since he had a good reputation, he wanted me to have a bad one to justify and use me in future situations. Of course, I take advantage of this and do as I see fit.

“But I have heard things since school started.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah. Apparently, nobody has seen her in the dorms but there have been no carriages from their house around as well. So how is she getting to school on time if she’s not in the dorms. There were rumors that she has a private building but no one has ever seen it.”

Sylvia and Melanie make sure that we are never followed. So, our countermeasures for such things were successful.

“Then, some students said that she frequently goes to the principal.”

“Frequently? We haven’t even been in school for a month.”

“This one I can guarantee. You see, I did a lookout and I actually saw her going there once. So, at least there is some truth to this one.”

“Wait, you stalked a duke’s daughter? You sure you’ll be okay?”

Hmm, she was able to spy on us without the other two noticing? Interesting.

“Also, she doesn’t interact with people that much. Some nobles have been talking behind her back. They say that she hasn’t spoken to anyone other that her maid and a baron’s daughter.”

Hmm, this is enough. Blue hair knows a lot so I will consider talking to her in the future. I start to walk towards them. Red hair starts speaking but does not notice.

“It doesn’t make sense. Nothing you said even shows any reason for her to bother me. Like why-“

Red hair looks at blue hair as I stop behind her.

“She’s behind me, isn’t she?”

Blue hair nods.

“Hah. Just do what you’re gonna do and go. I ain’t gonna bother with you today.

I smile and I see blur hair shiver as I pour the cup of water on her head and then, I walk away.

“See? I still don’t get why she keeps on doing this.”

I learned something important today. Ah, how exciting.
