Chapter 10
The clattering of dishes and cutlery echoed through the silent living room.
The air was so heavy that I couldn’t even breathe properly. I couldn’t tell if the food was going into my mouth or my nose.
This morning, it was my turn to cook, so I simply made Bacalhau soup with dried cod. When I made soup with dried fish, it turned into a slightly salty soup similar to North Korean dried pollack soup. If I add soy sauce and noodles to this, even food critic would smile like a Buddha and exclaim, “The dried cod’s savory taste has become one with the soup!”
The reason I made this soup was simple. It was easy to make, Iris liked this menu, and Camellia needed to sober up. It was a perfect trinity, a win-win situation.
“Master, your cooking skills have improved a lot. We’ve been living together for 12 years, and you’ve been making terrible food all this time… Today is the best you’ve ever done.”
Look, even Iris is praising my cooking. I’m not sure why she’s emphasizing that they’ve been living together for 12 years.
Camellia kept bringing the soup to her mouth. And she evaluated my cooking like this:
“It’s quite tasty, Werner. Compared to the pie you made for me when you were 10 years old, saying you’d marry me when you grew up.”
Why are you suddenly bringing up Werner’s black history and the contents of a comedic interlude in Dragnity Fantasy 1? Was it that bad? And that pie was a weird dish made with freshwater fish, cherries, and dried plums. If it’s tastier than that, it must be disgustingly bad.
“Anyway, if you’re done eating, please leave quickly, ma’am.”
There were thorns in Iris’s words. No, not thorns, but a level of a spear. Camellia, who was pierced by that spear, responded calmly as if nothing had happened.
“I was asked by your father to protect you if I couldn’t bring Werner back.”
Oh, was that the case? I don’t know every part of the game’s story, so I didn’t catch these details. But I feel like something doesn’t add up, but let’s move on.
“Will you tell my father that I’ll protect Master, so he doesn’t have to worry?”
“You still look weak. Isn’t Werner protecting you instead?”
I don’t know exactly, but I know for sure that the atmosphere is tense because of me. Moreover, it’s not possible to run away because my disciple is sitting next to me, and Camellia is sitting near the exit.
The only way to escape is to fly away… By the way, Werner’s attributes were fire, wind, ice, water, lightning, light, darkness, earth, wood, and steel. This is exactly like the attributes in Digimon Frontier.
I imagined using Hyper Spirit Evolution to combine the attributes of fire, wind, ice, earth, and wood. The image of transforming into Kaiser Greymon and escaping was vividly drawn. Of course, Magnagarurumon, which combines the attributes of light, darkness, lightning, steel, and water, is not possible. That guy is so useless that he might die while trying to fly.
I digressed a bit, but anyway, Iris and Camellia’s gazes were colliding. You know how in animations, there’s a scene where gazes collide and sparks fly? I didn’t know it was possible in real life.
“Master, didn’t I tell you not to meet any woman without my permission yesterday?”
“Werner, you’ve raised your disciple badly. To treat your master like this… You’ve always had a soft spot, which was a flaw.”
Was Werner soft? If someone kidnapped his disciple, he’s the kind of person who would massacre the leadership of a small country. Well, that might be considered soft by elf standards. Who knows? By elf standards, to be soft, you might have to massacre all the people of a small country.
“Hey, you two, calm down… Noona, please leave today. Let’s meet separately tomorrow. I’m tired today…”
“Huff… Yes, you need to rest. I was rude yesterday, Werner.”
Camellia said so and straightened her clothes. She returned to her usual cool and rational self. Unlike when she was drunk yesterday, she looked so cold-hearted that it was like a different person.
Camellia walked straight to the entrance, and Iris saw her off.
Fortunately, she’s being polite because she’s a friend of her father and her master. Iris is indeed a kind child. I should really stamp a [Well Done!] on her forehead.
As soon as Camellia stepped out of the door, Iris greeted her like this:
“You’re quite familiar with being carried by a man when you’re drunk and sleeping together… Please don’t do that again.”
Shit, that wasn’t a greeting.
Camellia’s face turned red at Iris’s taunt, and she turned around.
“When I drink, I can still maintain my sense of judgment. If it wasn’t Werner I wouldn’t have called anyone…”
Before Camellia could finish her sentence, Iris closed the door.
I heard the sound of the door locking.
“Finally, that damn elf is gone.”
They didn’t get along in the game either. Even if it wasn’t because of Werner’s death, they just didn’t get along personally. I don’t know what they didn’t like about each other to become such sworn enemies.
Iris is a little troublesome, but she’s kind, smart, and more considerate than anyone else. Camellia is cold and blunt in her speech and attitude, but she’s also the most affectionate and righteous person. They might even have better personalities than Werner, who is cynical and avoids troublesome tasks.
One of them, exuding a dangerous aura, approached me. I don’t know why I saw a red aura rising around Iris.
“….Master?”
“Yes, Iris… Wasn’t it your turn to do the dishes today?”
“Master…?”
Her face was smiling, but her attitude and energy were not. She seemed ready to punch me in the stomach at any moment.
“Oh, I’ll do it. I suddenly feel like doing the dishes.”
I tried to leave in a hurry, but Iris stopped me with her hand.
“Stop your half-baked jokes and sit down. Before I really get angry.”
An angry Iris is scary. An angry Iris who writes strange lies in a letter to her father is even scarier.
“Okay, I’m sitting down. What’s wrong again?”
“Don’t you know why I’m really angry, Master?”
“But I didn’t promise not to meet other women… Camellia Noona is a trustworthy person. When I was young…”
“I don’t care about when you were young. The important thing is that you broke your promise to me by meeting another woman.”
Wait, I thought about it, and she’s not my wife. Whether I meet other women or not, what, do you want me to live as a virgin until I die? I felt a little angry.
“I mean, Iris, I wanted to talk to Camellia Noona…”
“Is that elf woman more important than your promise to me?”
Iris even crossed her arms. There was only one way to get out of this situation.
“Iris, I’ve been watching you since earlier… I’m really disappointed in you.”
Iris’s pupils shook at this. In the original work, Iris became gloomy when Werner told her he was disappointed in her.
“…What?”
“Camellia Noona, your father and mother… They’re all like family to me.”
“But Master!”
“Especially Camellia Noona, she took care of me along with your mother. She’s like a sister and mother to me.”
It was an official setting that Werner thought of Iris’s mother and Camellia this way.
“You insulted a person who’s like a sister and mother to me. I’m really… disappointed, Iris.”
“But Master…”
“It’s okay if you don’t learn magic. No one will say anything if you don’t learn swordsmanship. But you should know basic manners.”
“But Master…”
“I’m really disappointed. I’m feeling complicated, so I’ll go for a walk.”
A method to deliberately point out the other person’s mistake when they’re angry. This method can confuse the other person. And during that confusion, you can buy some time.
I turned the doorknob and went outside, but Camellia was gone. She must have gone somewhere else. Fortunately, if she was still outside, it would have been a little troublesome.
“Have dinner on your own or cook it yourself. I’ll be back late.”
“Master!”
“Don’t follow me unless you want to see this master truly angry.”
I slammed the door and left. This method would be quite effective. Because Werner always had dinner with Iris no matter what.
Because of that, Iris never had dinner after losing Werner.
“Did I go too far…”
I thought so, but today, Iris was wrong. Werner would have been angry. She insulted a person who was like family to him.
I decided to bury the trivial matters and enjoy the free time I had for the first time in a long time.
