Ch 02
The Dutiful zerg
In the middle of the night, He Yi woke up suddenly.
He had been strangled awake. Having exhausted his mental energy during the day and being far from the cutthroat world of the apocalypse, his usual vigilance had faded.
In the dead of night, the little one was not sleeping but instead causing a ruckus, tugging at his neck!
Damn, this little troublemaker.
The newly appointed guardian, He Yi, pushed his tongue against his molars and swiftly got up, wearing the same expressionless face as any parent dealing with a mischievous child.
In the faint light seeping in from outside, he could barely make out a pile of things not far away. He turned to glare at the culprit—the troublesome little one.
Indeed, raising a child has its risks; one must be cautious when picking up strays!
“Xiao Yi, lights.”
“[On it, Master~]” Xiao Yi responded cheerfully.
On this planet, where He Yi currently resided, there were no signs of other living beings. His standard of living had dropped dramatically, even worse than during the apocalypse, akin to wilderness survival on Earth.
Even having light at night was a luxury, as the number of usable, discarded energy blocks he had scavenged was limited.
However, He Yi, grumpy from being woken up, decided to indulge and give the little one a lesson wit “loving education.”
Ding—
Xiao Yi activated the light orb on the table, and the small wooden house suddenly brightened. The pile of objects on the floor became even more conspicuous: a metal cup, a ragged towel, a blanket, a wooden basin, a wooden chair, wooden chopsticks, a stone bowl, a stone pot…
All the previously neatly arranged household items had been pulled out by the little one and piled messily on the floor. The ragged towel was tangled with the chopsticks, the cup was upside down in the basin, the blackened stone pot was resting on the blanket…
The irritable He Yi thought to himself: raising a child is a skilled profession.
So, he squatted down and pressed his hands firmly on the little one’s shoulders, ready to start a “persuasive” lesson.
However, he noticed the little one’s flushed cheeks and the discolored zerg marks on the neck.
What was this? Delirious from fever?
“Little one, wake up? Why are you so hot?” He Yi’s irritation vanished instantly. He gently patted the flushed cheeks, trying to rouse the little one.
He Yi rolled up the tattered clothing in front of the little one’s belly and touched the intricate, beautiful pale-golden zerg patterns.
Ouch, it was burning hot.
Ah, this was beyond his knowledge.
He, a former human and now a pseudo-male zerg, had no idea what to do.
“Xiao Yi, come over quickly and check this out. What’s going on with these zerg patterns on the little one?” Even though He Yi had spent 999 days on this barren planet as a male zerg, he knew little about the zerg species, especially about young female zergs.
“Conduct a full examination,” He Yi added. He couldn’t afford to be careless with a sick young one.
Xiao Yi hopped over to the female zerg’s side. After a thorough scan, it reported:
“[Beep… beep… beep… Report to the Master, Xiao Yi previously misjudged. This female zerg is not E-class and is currently in a heat period.]”
“Heat period? What’s that?” He Yi frowned.
“[Heat period is an ancient term for female zergs, describing a state of high temperature due to the lack of mental energy guidance from male zergs during the retrogressive phase of a fourth-stage evolution. After the ancient battlefield incident, female zergs could evolve only up to the third stage, and the term ‘heat period’ became rare.]”
“[The heat period lasts for three days, characterized by high body temperature and nest-building behavior.]”
“Nest-building behavior?” He Yi was only partially comprehending.
“[Spring, the season of reproduction. Female zergs gather items with the scent of their male partners to create a nest-like environment, similar to birds, which is conducive to reproduction. The nest area prevents the zerg eggs from scattering and allows them to receive the male’s body heat evenly, promoting larval growth and development,]” Xiao Yi explained matter-of-factly.
He Yi’s black eyes darkened. “Reproduction? Male partner? zerg eggs?”
He stared coldly at the disheveled pile of household items on the ground. “The little one considers me a partner? In his dreams!”
Grinding his teeth, He Yi demanded, “How do I wake him up?”
“[Master, you only need to use your mental energy to guide him. He will naturally wake up,]” Xiao Yi advised.
Following Xiao Yi’s instructions, He Yi carefully extracted a few strands of his recently recovered mental energy and slowly channeled it into the young one’s mind, gently untangling the chaotic “ball of yarn” within.
He “saw” the core of the female zerg’s mind—a cone-shaped object emitting a pure golden glow.
He Yi’s “vision” was drawn to the brilliant zerg core, and his mental energy uncontrollably swirled around it, spinning frantically.
Round and round.
A crackling sound—
A surge of mental waves reversed and flooded into He Yi’s body, reaching deep into his consciousness.
He Yi was bewildered.
The guidance had ended, but the little female zerg’s face was flushed, its skeletal wings extended, looking as if it was tipsy from fake alcohol.
What was going on?!
“[Master, did you mark him? This damned female zerg actually seduced you!]” Xiao Yi’s startled voice rang out.
“Marking? Is it the marking I’m thinking of?” He Yi stared at the crescent-shaped mark that had appeared on the female zerg’s forehead, his voice heavy.
Xiao Yi: “[Yes, Master.]”
Awakening from his daze, Zhao heard this conversation. Had he been marked by the male zerg?
The trembling, piercing pain and pleasure he felt in his core earlier were not an illusion?
Was His Excellency now his male master?
The pain dissipated like a spring breeze, and Zhao immediately knelt down, slowly bowing and kissing the male zerg’s shoe tip:
“Male Master.”
This was the highest form of submission a female zerg could offer to a male.
However, the inexperienced He Yi was so shocked that he staggered back two steps, exclaiming in panic, “What… what are you doing?!”
“Male Master? You…” Zhao’s forehead touched the ground, his whole body tense. Had His Excellency discovered his subtle use of the core to entice?
“[You vile female zerg, retract those ugly wings of yours!]” Xiao Yi’s tone changed with anger.
As a competent male-zerg version early education robot, it not only failed to fulfill its duties but also let its master be seduced by a female zerg in retrogressive evolution.
What an enormous shame!
Zhao snapped out of it. In his excitement, he almost forgot about the male zergs’ aversion and hatred towards female zergs’ skeletal wings.
He quickly retracted his wings and apologized hastily, “I’m sorry, Male Master, I… I didn’t mean to offend your eyes.”
He Yi was dumbfounded.
Just now, a large pure gold energy mass appeared in his mind, followed by a chaotic and vast sphere of memories whirling around in his brain. He hurriedly glimpsed through them.
The sight startled him.
It turned out the female zerg in front of him was not a youngling; he was from the zerg star, of civilian origin, who had gone through countless hardships and bloody battles for decades, making numerous contributions to the peace of the zerg star. His name—Zhao.
“Zhao? Are you the Empire’s General?” He Yi couldn’t believe it.
“Yes, Male Master,” Zhao replied.
He Yi stiffened, feeling uneasy about the zerg species’ hierarchy of male dominance and female subservience. “Don’t kneel; get up… please.” The idea of making such a hero kneel made him worry about shortening his own life!
He squatted down to help the female zerg up from the ground. “I have no intention of being your male master, and you don’t need to act against your will because of the marking.”
He thought to himself, his daytime self was utterly foolish, attempting to keep an ambitious eagle as a little pet.
He Yi’s words felt like a cold bucket of water pouring over Zhao.
Zhao’s heart went cold.
Indeed, how could he have forgotten? He was a military female, and not just any military female, but the one who had repeatedly held the lowest success rate in matches.
His tightly clenched fists revealed sharp claws, and after several attempts, he finally found his voice: “Your Highness, I do not seek the position of a female lord; can I not even be a female servant?”
Such an enchanting male zerg, he didn’t want to miss this opportunity.
In the history of zerg Star, being marked by a male zerg was a rare privilege, a sign of favor from high-level males. Only those with an S-rank could mark females, and they only marked the ones they cherished most.
Zhao thought he was fortunate, only to realize that His Excellency had no intention of keeping him.
Was it his memories that disgusted His Excellency?
He Yi was surrounded by a palpable aura of sadness emanating from the female zerg. He couldn’t help but marvel at the mysterious nature of zerg marking, which not only enabled him to suddenly understand the zerg language but also allowed him to sense the female’s emotions.
He Yi gently patted the Imperial General’s shoulder, “Don’t misunderstand, I accidentally marked you without meaning to, and it’s not because I dislike you.”
Though the idea of suddenly having the allegiance of such a strong female was enticing, he felt it was taking advantage of the situation.
His conscience wouldn’t allow it!!
Seeing a glimmer of hope in the male zerg’s gentle expression, Zhao steeled himself and offered, “Your Excellency, your life-saving grace, Zhao will never forget. I… offer myself to you.”
He reached out to tug at the male zerg’s clothing, looking up at him shyly with bitten lips and hopeful eyes. He was mimicking a scene from a memory, copying the lines and actions exactly.
Except, being shorter now, he had to tilt his head back a bit too much. But those details didn’t matter.
He Yi thought: Who could resist this?
Faced with the female’s expectant, moist eyes, He Yi felt his heart flutter. Though his sexual orientation was towards the same sex, he was embarrassingly moved.
He couldn’t be blamed; the memories revealed that General Zhao’s looks and physique were exactly his type.
Perhaps this interstellar journey was the universe’s way of giving him a chance at romance?
Moreover, the crescent mark on Zhao’s forehead seemed to accuse him of taking advantage without taking responsibility.
Feeling guilty, He Yi cleared his throat, “Ahem, well… Ah Zhao, it’s just the two of us on this barren star, which seems like fate. How about we try being together? If it works out, great; if not, we can part amicably?”
But there’s no way we’re parting. As an older bachelor, he thought: wherever there’s a problem, I’ll fix it!
Once you’re in the pot, there’s no escaping.
Looking at the little general of the empire in front of him, the post-apocalyptic big boss secretly thought: Who needs a conscience? Isn’t a wife wonderful?
The female zerg general saw hope and immediately seized the opportunity. His icy blue eyes sparkled with light, and he said, “Okay.”
He raised three fingers to his forehead, “Under the zerg god, I, Zhao, vow to follow my male master, to conquer the vast universe and chase the stars and seas.”
Hearing this, He Yi, now without a conscience, excitedly extended his right hand, “I’m He Yi. Please take care of me for the rest of our lives.”
— Successfully not single, I’m awesome!
Zhao reached out his soft little paw, “Lord He Yi, my male master, please take care of me.”
— Successfully throwing myself at him, plan succeeded??
“Master, you’re bleeding from your nose,” Xiao Yi, who had been observing for a while, suddenly interrupted.
The embarrassed male zerg casually wiped away the nosebleed with his hand and said indifferently, “You saw wrong, Xiao Yi.”
Unfortunately, the bloodstain at the corner of his mouth added a flaw to his beautiful face, like a red rose petal on delicate white porcelain skin, wild and alluring.
The evidence was irrefutable, leaving no room for denial.
Zhao smiled, a gentle ripple appearing in his eyes. He took the male zerg’s hand and led him to sit on the bed. “Male lord, please sit and wait.”
The male zerg looked confused. Wait for what?
