Chapter 13: Extension
They arrived at the end of the lush cave, there were no more tall trees or glow berries.
Instead there were fungi of different colors and sizes. Most of them were glowing in their respective color.
This place was just an extension of the second layer. It houses more monsters, but they are easier to deal with.
They couldn't hide here because the vegetation wasn't as dense as in the lush cave.
Coal was happy they had finally left the lush cave, that means they wouldn't have to face spiders, and it wouldn't suffer from spider webs again.
If only it knew the disappointment it was about to experience.
They headed into the new location, and they were greeted by a fungi monster. Zero killed it instantly, the fungi monster exploded and covered Zero and Coal with its spores.
Zeros look changed, he was annoyed. He completely forgot this would happen, since in game it didn't matter. A game character didn't need to follow basic hygiene, he however did have to!
Coal wasn't even surprised anymore... of course something would splatter all over it again, it sneezed.
As they further explored the fungi location, they encountered a couple more of these fungi monsters, Zero had tried to avoid them, but that was unsuccessful.
The first monster they encountered, that could actually inflict damage, was an ant with a fungi sticking out of its head.
The ant was huge, almost as huge as the spider in the lush cave. This was an ant that would usually appear on the third layer... is it here because of the fungi?
The ant shrieked and ran towards the two, it didn't feel hostile though... what's wrong with this monster?
Zero jumped back to avoid the ant. The fungi on its head exploded. He remembered that there was a type of fungi that could zombify ants... was this one of them?
These fungi were not part of the game. He had feared that this fungi might zombify him aswell. He looked around, and saw that Coal was hit by the explosion.
He inspected it carefully... "Coal?" he didn't come closer to it. Coal was standing there not doing anything, it didn't react to Zeros call.
Zero prepared his scythe, he was ready to kill Coal if necessary. Not only a liability but also a threat? To hell with that!
Who would ever want a pet that wants to kill its owner? That's just dumb!
Coal turned around and starred at Zero... it made a funny face, the only thing that was missing was a "tee hee~" coming from it.
A loud howl was heard in the entire cave.
Zero was angry at the dog, he wanted to leave it here and never bother with it again. Let's just hope this fungi only works on ants, just like in the real world... sigh.
They found some more chests with extra health, but that was it. Not even a pedestal with a weapon? What's wrong with this run?
They roamed around the fungi location for a bit, and headed back. They didn't find anything of value in here.
The second layer didn't have any secret places or bosses. So they just headed out to find the checkpoint and finish off the second layer.
Not long after, they found the portal leading to the second checkpoint, Zero prepared to strike as soon as he would enter the checkpoint.
Of course he threw the dog in first, he couldn't have it any other way. Coal didn't even resist anymore, it already knew what would happen as soon as it saw the portal.
Zero jumped into the portal, a skeleton stood on the 3 perks. As soon as he entered the skeleton dashed towards him. This skeleton was much stronger compared to the last one.
It had a shield and a sword, its movements were better and sharper. As if it had practiced just for this one day.
Zero blocked the skeletons sword and slashed back at the skeleton. The skeleton blocked his scythe with its shield and hit Zeros shoulder with its sword.
That didn't do any harm to Zero because of the artifact. Zeros scythe burned up, it was the torch spell he infused into it before.
This spell was completely useless on a wand, but on any melee weapon? The best spell ever!
The flames burned up, at this point Zero looked like Satan himself. He struck the skeleton, and the skeleton dissappeared in flames.
Only ash was left, what a terrifying spell! Zero didn't remember the skill being this powerful!
The shop didn't offer any good weapons once again. Zero walked past them and headed straight for the perks.
The perks this time were a bit better, but still there was only a single good one.
Zero picked up the tablet, and the other two dissappeared. This was a fire damage immunity perk.
This was a very great one! This would come in handy especially at the fourth layer. No matter how powerful the flame is, he would sustain no damage from it at all.
Coal just laid down next to where the perks were and fell asleep. It had hoped that the human would let it sleep for at least a bit.
The human should be tired right? He wouldn't go off somewhere right away, would he?
Lucky for Coal, Zero decided to take a break for a bit. He was covered in spores. He just wanted to take a bath and eat something.
There was a little pond in the checkpoints, usually it was used to refill flasks with water, and wash off unwanted effects. That was the case in the game.
For him it was useful in many other ways. Drinking and hygiene.
He had not found any special fluids in the second layer... usually it was full of different types of fluids. Why were there none this time?
He would like to get more invisibility fluid, or a damage reduction fluid, but there simply were none.
He was at a loss, too many things are different from the game. He had hoped he could ignore it, but it doesn't seem like he can.
He shrugged and threw a glance at Coal. It already fell asleep. He got angry again, what a lazy dog... this time however the cave didn't hear a howl. He let it be.
He went up to the goddesses statue behind the portal. His scythe was eager to absorb more divine power, so he sliced it in two and let the scythe absorb its divine power.
A second, red portal appeared. This was the portal to the surface.
His scythe cracked once again. Zero was a bit worried about the cracks... but the scythe wouldn't long for things that would break it. Would it?
He didn't think so. He used the dog as a pillow and fell asleep, he should get some rest before going to the third layer.
