Chapter 12: The second layer
The second layer was a lush cave, the air was moist. This place could be compared to the Amazon Rainforest.
Some glow berries lit up the entire layer.
Zero thought this place is the worst of all the layers. Hard to navigate, and lots of monsters hiding in the vegetation.
Compared to the first layer, this place was over a thousand times more dangerous!
Zero took a glance at Coal, it was baring its teeth and growling at a bush.
Zero grabbed his scythe with both hands prepared to attack.
A dark green spider jumped out of the bush. It struck Coal with one of its legs, Coal couldn't dodge in time and flew against a wall behind them.
The spider shrieked as if trying to intimidate Zero. However it didn't work, he had seen this monster countless times before. This was the most common monster on the second layer.
Zero swung his scythe at the spider, his strikes had become sharper, he was improving every single day. The spider dodged the strike and shot some webs at Zero.
Zero had to dodge the strike, Coal was right behind him, but he couldn't do anything against the spider webs. It wasn't a spell, so the scythe couldn't absorb it.
Coal got hit by the spider web, luckily the web was just a web, and it only immobilized it.
Coal had mixed feelings about this, it was glad the human didn't just leave it here to die fighting the spider, but at the same time... You brought me here! Protect me god damn it!
Coals level was way lower than the monsters on the second layer, it was completely useless in a fight. Zero had to rely on himself, and Coal had to rely on him aswell.
While Zero was fighting the spider, Coal saw something approaching. It barked at Zero trying to get his attention, but that was unsuccessful.
Zero has pierced the spiders head, but as soon as Zero turned around to free Coal, a huge snake appeared and swallowed him whole.
The snake was huge! One could mistake it for a train, why are all monsters on the second layer so huge?
These snakes were not as common as spiders, they usually guarded pedestals with weapons or tools.
Coal lost hope. This human brought it here only to die to the second enemy they met, and it couldn't even run away because of the spider web... it sighed. Just get it over with.
Zero sliced open the snake from within, covered in a sticky fluid and blood. Gross!
However Coal was glad, the human didn't die so it was safe for now.
Zero starred at it, as if trying to say 'Why didn't you warn me at the very least?'
Was it..? Was it really safe? A howl could be heard in the entire lush cave.
They found the pedestal the snake was guarding, it was nothing much... a Torch spell. The weakest spell of the fire element.
He infused it into his scythe and headed in further into the cave. They encountered many more spiders, and each encounter Coal had been covered in the white sticky spider web... the look on its face was gloomy.
Zero soon found the first chest of this layer, another health increase. He was wondering whether to use it himself or give it to Coal, but after remembering every single fight they had been through, he frowned and used it himself.
This guy didn't do anything in all these fights, why would Zero even consider giving it anything?
Soon they found a pond and decided to rest for a bit. Zero couldn't tell how much time had passed since they came down here, but he was getting quite tired.
He glanced at Coal only to see it even more exhausted. This guy... didn't do anything and you are exhausted?
After this, Coal went for a nice and refreshing swim in the pond. A howl could be heard in the entire lush cave once again.
Zero took out some food from his inventory and ate up, he was very hesitant to give Coal anything... he gave it some meat again.
This dog should be grateful to have such a generous owner, who else would feed such a liability?
He sighed, was he getting too soft? He should quickly kill the final boss to unlock achievements- wait... a thought crossed his mind. After killing the boss the game just kills you to record your statistics, so I will die if I kill the final boss?
He took a glance at the dog, maybe having a companion isn't that bad?
Coal suddenly felt a cold down his spine, what is this human thinking again? He wouldn't use it as bait or something right?
Zero didn't intend to use it as bait, it would just die without even accomplishing its goal. What a lucky fellow.
Zero fell asleep under a tree, how could he sleep in this place? Is he not afraid at all?
Coal was too anxious to fall asleep. Zero had the protection ring and was not afraid of any attack monsters of this layer could launch. The only thing he was afraid of is being trapped in the spiders webs. He didn't know whether he could free himself with the strength he has now.
That however didn't disturb his sleep even a bit. Coal on the other hand couldn't fall asleep at all. It had hoped for the human to wake up and stand guard for at least a bit... but that of course didn't happen.
After a default morning routine, Coal and Zero set out to other areas of the second layer.
Coals eye was twitching, completely sleep deprived, it just followed the human deeper into the cave.
Zero couldn't help but wonder how bad this runs world is, there are almost no pedestals with weapons, and barely any chests with health boosts.
He had only found 2 pedestals in 2 layers! This run would be considered doomed if he was a new player.
Usually the first thing players do is jump straight into the hole, and try to find a weapon in the 1st layer, while running away from any monsters.
However all the weapons he came across didn't even have any attack spells on them. This was a dead run from the very beginning!
He shook his head. Even if the players weren't as clueless as they were, they would just die and achieve nothing.
Good thing that with his extensive knowledge, a bad start doesn't doom the run. Even if he jumped in here without the scythe, the run was still salvageable.
In front of the cave entrance, someone had appeared. A young girl with an axe in her hands.
She looked down the bottomless pit, although hesitant, she gulped, and jumped down.
