Chapter 12: I Yearn for a Position in the Student Council

"...How much do you actually hate the Shinomiya family?"

"There are three types of people I despise most: first, those bastards from the CIA; second, the pirates from Somalia; and third, your Shinomiya family," Ronan replied. "These are the three groups that have always been a thorn in my side, and your family was the first to make things difficult for me."

"Sounds like I've become a thorn in your side."

"While I can't stand the people in your family, you, miss, don't actually take part in the decisions at Shinomiya. So, I can at most just dislike you. If it were your father or those two brothers of yours, I probably would have already taken action."

"I suppose I should count myself lucky to have escaped that fate."

"You know how your family is perceived out there; I don't need to elaborate. In terms of schemes and conspiracies, I may not be as clever as you, but when it comes to being ruthless, you're just amateurs."

"So you did some despicable things four years ago?"

"If you think losing a few people is the worst of it, just wait—you'll have plenty to deal with. What happened four years ago was just the beginning," Ronan scoffed. "Seeing your family members hopping around every day makes me sick to my stomach."

"That's not to say things have been going well, especially after the incident four years ago; the main family has been in disarray since then," Kaguya said.

"…The subsidiaries I targeted don't seem to have caused any significant damage to your wealth, right? Don't tell me the main family cares about those dead subordinates; that would be more ridiculous than a cat mourning a mouse."

"It happened within two months after you left Japan."

Kaguya said calmly, "Ronan, what is your true identity?"

"Didn't I already tell you that a while ago?"

"About a month after you left Japan, the main family received reports that all of the group's operations in Southeast Asia had suffered varying degrees of losses. They shut down forty companies in succession, and senior executives resigned for no apparent reason. Stocks were maliciously dumped, leading to a flood of negative news and a significant drop in the Shinomiya Group's stock price."

At this point, Kaguya glanced at Ronan with her wine-red eyes.

"This was likely the biggest loss the Shinomiya Group has faced since the Asian Financial Crisis, and it's said that the Southeast Asia branch of IW was behind it... This must have something to do with you, right?"

Listening to Kaguya's account, Ronan leaned back against the couch as if he had something to imply:

"Back then, due to the 'Plaza Accord,' manufacturing costs in Japan skyrocketed. While your Shinomiya family was reaping the benefits of the real estate market, many corporate groups, including yours, relocated their factories to Southeast Asia, primarily Thailand, to cut costs. This is also why your family remained stable in Japan even after the bubble burst... However, relocating so many factories abroad also means facing certain challenges. If someone decides to target your manufacturing sector at that point, you would struggle to defend yourself. You can flaunt your power in Japan, but things are different overseas."

"...So it was indeed you? If you are just a junior lieutenant in the IW Middle East Operations Department as the documents state, you shouldn't have the authority to mobilize resources from a large department," Kaguya frowned and said. "Also, all information regarding your parents and relatives is untraceable."

"What I can tell you for sure is that I didn't do this; I only learned about it after leaving Japan," Ronan replied. "And don't investigate my identity casually; not even your main family can dig up anything."

"...I understand now. I won't make wild guesses about your identity," Kaguya sighed.

"That's good. Let's just focus on getting along during these high school years. We can address future matters later," Ronan said.

"I agree."

Ronan nodded, taking out his phone to check the time. The lunch break hadn't been long, and there was still plenty of time before classes resumed.

"Since President Shirogane isn't here, I'll visit the student council later," he remarked as he stood up and walked toward the door.

At the moment he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of Miyuki, who was about to enter.

"Eh? You're that exchange student from yesterday?" Miyuki recognized him, given the few exchange students at the school, especially one who had an apparent quarrel with Kaguya, hinting at some rivalry.

"Wait a minute..."

With only Kaguya in the student council office, and with Ronan standing there, it was clear there was some tension between them.

Did he come to the student council office intending to escalate their feud?

Slap!

Miyuki grabbed Ronan's shoulders tightly.

"Yao-kouhai, please don't make your situation any worse!"

Ronan was taken aback, "???"

Kaguya smiled gracefully, saying, "President, Mr. Yao isn't here to harm me. He just wants to discuss something with you."

"Eh? Really?" Miyuki replied, surprised.

"I really dislike being called 'junior.'" Ronan remarked, glancing at Miyuki.

"So, President Shirogane, I came to the student council office with a matter to discuss with you."

"Ah, I see. You gave me quite a scare there."

Shirogane visibly relaxed, stepping into the office and taking a seat in his presidential chair. "What do you need help with, Yao-san?"

"Well, President Shirogane, I would like to join the student council."

"Ah?"

"I noticed that there are positions for an accountant and for miscellaneous tasks in the council. I believe I'm quite capable of fulfilling the accountant position, as I have experience handling order data."

"I see…"

Shirogane paused for a moment, unsure how to decide. Although he had the authority to assign council members, it was not something he could do lightly; candidates needed to undergo a thorough assessment.

"If you're unsure, you could give me a data set, and I'll have it organized by tomorrow," Ronan offered.

"…Alright, how about this: Yao-san, come to the student council office after school. There's a budget report for the school clubs that needs processing; you can take a look at it."

"Sounds good! But why after school? The lunch break should still be quite long."

"Well… there's a rather troublesome meeting to attend," Shirogane said with a hint of exasperation. "I have to deal with the Student Council Federation soon."

"The Student Council Federation… oh, you mean the 'Shuchiin VIP,' right?"

"Ah? You already know?"

"A friend told me… how about this? I'll go with you to the Student Council Federation meeting."
