Chapter 5: Modern Technology, The Amazing Immortal Empress:
It was hard to believe it all happened in an instant. The autumn waters soon calmed. If she didn’t have the courage to start again, she wouldn’t be worthy of the title “Immortal Empress.”
In this world without cultivators, no matter how skilled a mortal was, he was still just a mortal and couldn’t compare with a cultivator. That was what Qiu Shui thought at first. But as she followed Lin Li, walking through busy streets and alleys, watching people laugh, observing order, seeing planes soar through the sky, she began to understand.
The craftsmanship of mortals wasn’t so different from the civilization of cultivators. In some ways, it even surpassed it.
“You mean, because of something called air conditioning, the people here aren’t afraid of the summer heat or the winter cold? And they don’t worry about food, clothing, or their daily lives?” Qiu Shui asked, walking alongside Lin Li. Though she was dressed simply, her striking aura caught the attention of passersby.
Lin Li shook his head. “Not everyone can live like that. There are still disputes in this world, but it’s far less chaotic than the cultivation world.”
“How many people can live this way?” she asked.
“If there were no disputes or inequality, everyone could. But with these problems, only about 30% of people can,” Lin Li replied. He came from an ordinary family but still enjoyed many comforts. His pocket money allowed him to treat his friends to meals a few times each month.
Although his relationship with Jiang Xueer drained his savings and ruined his chance at a more carefree life, even this ‘miserable’ experience was something that most people in the world of immortality—and even some monks—could never dream of.
“This world is wonderful.” Qiu Shui sighed.
Lin Li nodded. “Yes, so don’t be upset about not going back. Even ordinary people here live much more interesting lives than monks.”
“Black Pot, why do you think I’m upset? Do I seem like a sad person?” Qiu Shui glanced at Lin Li, sounding annoyed.
“I’ll accept being called a scapegoat, but don’t call me a Black Pot!” Lin Li muttered, feeling irritated as it reminded him of an old friend. After so much time in the cultivation world, coming back to Earth made everything seem so ordinary.
“I’m starting from scratch,” Qiu Shui said confidently, ignoring Lin Li. “Black Pot, do you believe me? I survived the deadly trials in the cultivation world. I’ll thrive here too!”
Lin Li hesitated. “Uh, yes, yes.”
“Be careful,” Qiu Shui continued. “The most important thing now is to gather information. Black Pot, follow me!” Her voice rang out, commanding, as she instinctively made a sword gesture, ready to fly into the sky to survey the land. But a quick pat at her waist reminded her that her flying sword, along with all her magical items, was lost during her ascension through space turbulence. The moment became awkward.
“…”
Qiu Shui stood still for a moment. “Well, since I can’t use my sword, I’ll just walk.”
Unwilling to break the moment, Lin Li quietly shook his phone and said, “In this world, you can find basic information without leaving your home.”
“…”
Qiu Shui was silent again. “What kind of magical tool is that?”
“Find a place to sit, and I’ll show you,” Lin Li suggested. Then a thought crossed his mind. “By the way, since you time-traveled, did you already have these clothes?”
“Not bad.” Qiu Shui nodded.
“Then it seems like you didn’t bring the clothes, but your soul did. Like a transmigration.” Lin Li speculated.
“Transmigration? But I look the same as always,” Qiu Shui responded. “And I don’t remember anything about a body takeover.”
“Right, if you had memories, you wouldn’t be so surprised by all of this.” Lin Li said, giving her a strange look.
“Exactly.” Qiu Shui replied.
“Okay, check your pockets to see if you have anything to identify yourself.” Lin Li suggested.
Qiu Shui skeptically reached into her pocket and, to her surprise, pulled out a note. It read:
My name is Qiu Shui. I am a mental patient. I have lived in a mental hospital since childhood. I have a brain condition and experience intermittent episodes. I escaped from the hospital. If you see me, please return me to Sunshine Mental Hospital in Shushan District. Thank you!
Qiu Shui: “…”
Lin Li: “…”
Stunned, Lin Li thought, “This identity seems absurd, but it suits Qiu Shui perfectly. Could this have all been arranged beforehand? Is this all part of the fantasy? Then again, his transmigration and Qiu Shui’s arrival were already fantastical enough. Adding one more layer didn’t seem too far-fetched.
But then he turned to see Qiu Shui looking ready to kill, and he shivered. “Don’t worry, I won’t send you to a mental hospital!”
“You’d better not. If you even try, I’ll beat you up!” Qiu Shui warned. She didn’t fully understand what a mental hospital was, but it clearly wasn’t a place for people in their right mind. After thinking for a while, she gave up trying to figure it out. “Since I have nowhere to go, I’ll live with you,” she declared.
“???”
Lin Li panicked. He imagined the scene of bringing a woman home and being beaten by his parents. “No, my family is home. I can’t take you there.”
“You don’t have your own place?” Qiu Shui asked after a moment of silence. “Fine. Even though you’re living a miserable life right now, just help me find a place. Once I understand this world better, I’ll help you succeed.”
Miserable life?
Lin Li wanted to argue but couldn’t find the right words. Frustrated, he relented. “Alright. I’ll figure out a place for you to stay.”
“Good,” Qiu Shui said, satisfied. “And Black Pot, if anyone bullies you, let me know. I’ll take care of it. Even without my spiritual power, I can still defeat hundreds of mortals.”
“Well, there are no cultivators here, but there are advanced weapons like guns. Even a mortal with a gun can easily kill hundreds, as long as they have enough bullets,” Lin Li explained cautiously, worried that Qiu Shui might lose her temper and cause some disaster, like tearing soldiers apart with her bare hands.
“Got it, Black Pot,” Qiu Shui nodded seriously.
“…Stop calling me Black Pot!”
