Chapter 214 [Two-Person Hospital Room (3)]
That night…
Late in the evening, after all visitors, including Ethan, Seriste, and Gyeongmwajogyegigwat had returned to their respective places, the hospital room was naturally left with just its original occupants, Agnes and me.
We hadn’t yet discussed the second thing we had to prepare to eliminate Machart. Naturally, it wasn’t something to be talked about in front of everyone, as it was a matter that should be known by as few people as possible.
I’d have to discuss the issue about the real Saint alone with Seriste later when it’s just the two of us. If absolutely necessary, I could include just the Hero. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
Anyway, given all the tiring events of yesterday and today, my body was reaching its limit. It was just yesterday that I had engaged in a sincere evaluation duel with Agnes while playing all sorts of mind games, and today, I hadn’t been able to rest until late due to the prolonged meeting, so physical fatigue had accumulated considerably.
‘I need to rest well and recover quickly. If I’m to attend the noble exchange meeting that Machart will participate in during this vacation…’
Just as I was about to go to bed with such thoughts, Agnes’s voice, calling me from the opposite bed, suddenly woke me up.
“Lilith, are you asleep?”
“…I was just about to fall asleep.”
“…Sorry, should I talk to you tomorrow?”
“It’s fine as long as it’s not too long. If we postpone it to tomorrow, we might forget. Just tell me now.”
“……”
Breathing sounds continued in quiet silence without a response.
Just when I thought she might have fallen asleep due to fatigue, Agnes’s voice cautiously came again.
“I’m sorry for fighting you seriously in yesterday’s duel.”
“Pardon?”
“You said you had no ill will, but I did. …So, I’m sorry.”
“…Come to think of it, you did say something like that.”
Right after hearing those words, I got caught up in Agnes’s Flame Explosion and ended up glossing over it. So, at that time, I didn’t immediately understand what she meant by having ill will, but it seems she really meant it sincerely.
I don’t think I said anything that would have made Agnes hold a grudge against me. I did provoke her a bit by fighting as if it were her final assignment, but Agnes, with her high magical knowledge, wouldn’t have gotten genuinely angry just because someone criticized her magic.
Other than that, the only thing I could think of that might have angered her was when I teased her about her physical characteristics rather than her magic in the middle of our conversation…
“Could it be that you were genuinely angry because of what I said about your height and chest a week ago?”
“…You didn’t know?”
“…No.”
Agnes gave me a bewildered look as if she couldn’t believe it.
I had just thought that Agnes’s act of being really angry was incredibly convincing, but realizing it wasn’t an act made me understand the situation better.
“I didn’t know you’d be truly hurt. I’m sorry, Miss Agnes.”
“…No. I brought up the topic of chests first. It was my fault, and I just took it out on you unnecessarily.”
“Still, in the end, our plan worked out well and we even ended up sharing the same hospital room, so that’s fortunate. Let’s think positively about it, shall we?”
“…So, are we reconciling?” [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
“Huh? Reconciling?”
“…Do you still dislike it?”
“That’s not what I meant… I was never angry with you in the first place, Miss Agnes. We’ve always been friends all along, haven’t we?”
“…Yes, that’s right.”
With those final words, Agnes quietly closed her eyes and turned her reddened face away.
Understanding that this meant she had said all she wanted to say, I too closed my eyes and quietly drifted off to sleep.
On the fourth day since Agnes and I were admitted to the academy’s church…
Two days after our meeting, Agnes quietly got up from her bed opposite mine with her luggage.
Today was the day of Agnes’s discharge from our shared hospital room.
“It seems the Elizabeth family carriage has arrived, Miss Agnes.”
“…Should I stay a bit longer?”
“Pardon?”
“You never know. That bastard Machart might attack you while you’re alone.”
“We’ve already heard through Hero Gyeongmwajogyegigwat that Prince Machart has returned to the Imperial Palace. The information came from Princess Seraphine, so it must be true.”
“…Still.”
“Besides, I’ll be discharged in a day or two as well. Young Master Ethan will visit often until my discharge day, so you don’t need to worry that much.”
“……”
“The carriage is waiting outside, Miss Agnes.”
Agnes still had a strangely worried expression, perhaps still concerned about me, but she quietly nodded, seeming to have made up her mind at my firm attitude.
“Alright. Then I’ll go ahead. Take care of yourself.”
“Travel safely.”
For reference, I had been advised by Seriste that it would be better for me to receive a bit more treatment.
Although it was a double down, the extent of the injuries I sustained at the end of the duel was more severe than Agnes’s, so I ended up staying at the church longer. This was due to Agnes’s explosion magic being more powerful.
I should have been more injured since I only absorbed the impact of Agnes’s Flame Explosion while Agnes suffered both a stab to the heart and the impact of her own spell, but Agnes’s Flame Explosion had nearly twice the impact on me.
…The fact that Agnes thrust her staff between my breasts in the final moment of the duel might have had a significant effect. Considering the size of these fat lumps that I can’t help but be aware of every time I stand in front of a mirror, they might have absorbed some of the shock of the explosion magic that was meant to reach Agnes.
“Your bag looks heavy. Shall I help you carry half of it?”
“You’re a patient, aren’t you? Don’t worry about it.”
“I’m just worried you might fall while going down the stairs.”
“Who do you think I am, a child?”
Honestly, judging by appearances alone, I could believe it if someone said she was a middle school student, so she’s pretty much a child.
Well, it didn’t make sense for me, a patient, to help Agnes anyway, so I quietly waved goodbye to Agnes as she left.
“…See you at the Imperial Palace on the promised day.”
“Yes, Miss Agnes.”
Slide.
After confirming that Agnes had left the room and closed the door, I immediately woke up one of the two spirits sleeping beside me and made a request. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
I thought that Agnes probably wouldn’t refuse if it wasn’t me directly helping her.
“Sei, could you escort Agnes to the church entrance? It would be good if you could quietly reduce the weight of her luggage with wind magic.”
[…Okay. I understand.]
As I watched Sei secretly following Agnes, I looked around the now-empty hospital room. It felt a bit cramped when we were using it together, but now that I’m alone, it feels empty.
While thinking about this and quietly waiting to see Agnes leaving the building through the window, the door to the room suddenly opened, and Seriste, who was currently in charge of my treatment, entered.
“Oh, how are you feeling today, Lady Lilith?”
“Thanks to your care, Saint, I’m feeling much better. I feel like I could run around right now if I wanted to.”
“Y-You know you shouldn’t actually run around, right? You’ll probably be well enough to be discharged tomorrow or the day after, so please be patient until then. Your injuries were a bit more severe compared to Miss Agnes’s from the start.”
“…Yes, thank you.”
As I watched Seriste checking on my condition, I seriously thought to myself.
For some reason, I had been pondering about the title “Lady” that she had been using to address me for a while now. *1
I had tried my best not to pay attention to it until now, but no matter how I thought about it, the situation where she was addressing the current me with such an honorific title was too strange. In the original game, there weren’t many characters that Seriste addressed with such formal titles throughout the entire story.
The protagonist character, the Hero, whom Seriste admired, the church elders, who held higher positions than her in the Aurelian Church, and the members of the Royal Family whom everyone addressed respectfully. That was about it.
Of course, it’s not that Seriste didn’t use polite language with other people. She used polite speech consistently when talking to anyone, be it a child or an animal.
However, when addressing others, she usually used more common titles like “Miss” or “Mr.”, and titles like “Lady” or “Lord” were reserved for addressing characters of completely different statuses.
There was absolutely no reason for her to use such an honorific title for me, unlike for Ethan, who was from a duke’s family and thus of high status. However, Seriste was using the “Lady” title only for me.
‘Moreover, all attempts to correct this have been rejected.’
If that’s the case, there’s only one reason why Seriste had started using the “Lady” title to address me.
I had a vague idea about this. I recently remembered that there was a time in the original game when Seriste started addressing Lilith with that.
‘It was undoubtedly when Lilith awakened as the Saint, and Seriste hadn’t awakened as one yet. That was when Seriste called Lilith “Lady Lilith”.’
This was an event that could really only be experienced occasionally while playing the game. The reason it was only occasional was that in the work, the “Saint Awakening” event was usually performed by Seriste before Lilith.
Seriste is a character who accompanies the protagonist almost throughout the entire first part, so naturally, the protagonist’s XP and Seriste’s XP increase proportionally.
However, Lilith is a character who only joins at the end of Part 2, so of course, there would be a difference in cumulative XP compared to Seriste’s.
Of course, Lilith doesn’t start at a low level as her joining level is 15, but usually, by the middle of Part 2, the main characters, including Seriste, would have grown to almost Level 20.
In fact, it was almost impossible to defeat Ethan, the miniboss of Part 2, without leveling up to around Level 20, and even pig-era Ethan was quite strong with the support of a Level 15 Lilith, so it was necessary to level up to about Level 20 to face him confidently.
In the process of leveling up, Seriste’s level would naturally increase along with the Hero’s, and it was the most common situation in playing Luminor Academy for her to be at a higher level than Lilith from the moment Lilith joined.
‘Also, I wasn’t an ordinary player of Luminor Academy.’
As someone who had tried all sorts of strategies to see the “Lilith Virgin Ending”, of course, “Awakening Lilith Before Seriste” was included. [Only on Galaxy Translations! / Axiomatic]
The method was to make the protagonist character reach a significantly higher level by grinding intensively from the beginning of Part 1 and then joining with Seriste afterwards. Using this method, it wasn’t impossible to face Ethan with Seriste’s level lower than Lilith’s.
Also, if you proceed to Part 5 with Lilith in the party in this state, you could awaken Lilith before Seriste, and I remember that for a short period until Seriste awakened, she used the title “Lady Lilith” when addressing Lilith.
If this hypothesis that has barely emerged in my mind applies to the current situation…
‘…It means Seriste already knows that I’m the real Saint.’
If she really knew that I was the Saint, there was no reason to hesitate any longer.
The time and opportunity for me to talk alone with Seriste were running out.
T/N
I, unfortunately, missed this detail in previous chapters as it kept on being translated as Miss Lilith and not Lady Lilith. That means that when Seriste first realized Lilith was the real Saint, she started calling her Lady Lilith and not Miss Lilith. Not sure if I’ll have time to edit previous chapters to reflect this, though.
Hello! Axiomatic here.
See you in a bit for the bonus chapter!
