Chapter 107: Funeral
All the intruders that entered Konoha were killed by the Senju and Uchiha guards. The only one left alive was Kakuzu, as Hashirama realized that Kakuzu was just a child soldier paid to confront him.
Not wanting to make Kakuzu a victim of his village, Hashirama spared his life after beating him down. Only Hashirama knew he had let Kakuzu go, everyone else believed he had finished him off.
Tragically, the most important loss that day was Kamado Nezuko, the wife of Uchiha Izuna. If Hashirama had known earlier that Kakuzu was just a distraction, he wouldn't have let him escape and would have taken the fight more seriously.
Later that evening, the Yamanaka clan attempted to read the memories of the deceased intruders, but they discovered that their brains had been melted, making it impossible to retrieve any memories.
Tobirama visited Izuna's home that day. He had never seen Izuna look so disheveled—his hair was messy, and the sadness in his eyes was unmistakable.
When Izuna noticed Tobirama's arrival, he lifted his eyes, staring directly at him.
"Tobirama, which village did this? Who paid them?" Izuna asked angrily.
"The Yamanaka clan tried to examine their memories, but they were prepared. Upon death, their brains melted, making it impossible to read their memories," Tobirama explained.
Suddenly, dark and oppressive chakra surged out from Izuna, his face contorting as veins bulged on his forehead.
"WHAT?!" Izuna stood up, his expression filled with fury.
"I'm sorry, Izuna. We've done our best to check their memories," Tobirama apologized, seeking forgiveness.
In his rage, Izuna was on the verge of summoning his Susanoo, but he stopped when Kazuha awoke from her sleep.
"Papa," said Kazuha. The menacing aura of chakra around Izuna faded instantly.
"Yes, darling," Izuna replied gently.
"Papa, is Mama really gone?" Kazuha asked, tears welling up in her eyes once again.
"Mama has gone to a faraway place," Izuna said soothingly.
"Papa, can I go with Mama?" Kazuha pleaded. Hearing this, both Izuna and Tobirama were heartbroken.
Izuna hugged his daughter tightly, tears streaming down his face. "I'm sorry, Kazuha, but Mama won't be able to see us again. She's passed away."
Kazuha understood the concept of death, having heard stories from her clansmen about life before Konoha. She knew what it meant for someone to pass away.
Tobirama, listening to the heart-wrenching exchange between father and daughter, couldn't help but cry as well.
---Funeral Day---
Madara returned to the village after completing his mission in just one day. He had carried the client on his back and used Shunshin to reach the destination. No ninja or bandit dared to challenge him.
When he arrived back in Konoha, he was shocked to learn that Nezuko had died, and a funeral was being held for her.
Even Setsuna, who lived more than a hundred kilometers away from Konoha, received the tragic news.
"That foolish Izuna. I told him to stay in Konoha," Setsuna muttered, frustrated with both Izuna and Madara. He had warned them beforehand.
But according to the report, it happened while Izuna and Madara were out of the village.
"It's the host's fault," the System interjected.
"How is this my fault?" Setsuna snapped, ready to scold the System.
"Because I told you to have more children, but you refused. Now the virus has infected their wisdom, making them leave Konoha and doing a mission," the System said, smiling, though Setsuna couldn't see it.
"You... you never told me that if I didn't have more children, the virus would infect the wisdom of the people in this world," muttered Setsuna angrily.
"I did tell you that my presence would block the virus," the System defended itself.
"Yeah, you did, but you never said that if I didn't try to have more children, the virus would start affecting everyone," Setsuna countered, arguing with the System.
Setsuna was furious with himself, realizing that he was partly responsible for the growing stupidity of people around him because of the virus—even though they were key characters in the Naruto universe.
Because of this, he decided that every two years, his wives would have a child. This time, it was Haruko's turn, and two years later, it would be Akari. After confirming with the System that this method would prevent the virus from spreading, he reluctantly followed its advice to have as many children as he can.
Now, standing in front of Konoha Village with the Uzukage, he approached the guard.
"Please inform Hashirama that I'm requesting to attend Nezuko's funeral," said Setsuna.
"Alright, we'll notify the Hokage," replied the guard.
Despite being banned from entering Konoha for 10 years, Hashirama allowed Setsuna to enter for one day to pay his final respects to Nezuko.
---After Funeral---
The funeral proceeded with him as a visitor—he had never seen Izuna look so heartbroken. Even in his memories of Izuna losing close family members, Izuna had cried, but not with the same level of anguish.
Once the funeral concluded, Setsuna decided to visit Izuna.
"Are you okay?" Setsuna asked, but Izuna suddenly broke into tears again.
"I've failed... I failed as a husband, Setsuna. You warned me that someone was after my brother, and they might target my family. But instead of staying, I left on a mission, abandoning my wife and daughter—both unable to fight—alone in the village," Izuna confessed his regret, his voice filled with sorrow.
Madara, overhearing his brother's words, also shed tears at the sight of Izuna's anguish.
"No, Izuna. This is my fault. I shouldn't have accompanied you on that mission. I should have stayed behind to protect my niece."
The atmosphere remained heavy with grief, only breaking when Kazuha, exhausted from crying, finally woke up. Izuna, not wanting to show his vulnerable side to his daughter, quickly wiped his tears and went to comfort her.
Madara approached Setsuna, his expression serious, ready to ask a question.
"Can you find out who placed the bounty on my head?" Madara asked, sensing that today's tragedy might be connected to him. Setsuna had warned him previously that someone had put a price on his life.
From across the room, Izuna overheard his brother's question. Quietly, he decided to eavesdrop on their conversation, curious about who was the culprit of the incident.
"I don't know," Setsuna replied. "But I'll investigate who ordered the hit on you."
"How long will it take?" Madara pressed.
"One week at the earliest, two months at the latest," Setsuna answered.
"Please, Setsuna. The Yamanaka clan examined the intruders' minds, but their brains melted after death," Madara said, his tone pleading.
"Alright. I'll get to the bottom of this. Two months at the most," Setsuna agreed.
Setsuna was furious as well. They had targeted innocent civilians, and now he was determined to uncover the truth behind Nezuko's death.
