Chapter 198: Chapter 198: Old Scumbag
On Ego's sprawling planet, the night was still, but Mantis moved with urgency. She approached Drax, who lay sprawled on the ground, snoring loudly.
"Drax! Wake up, we need to talk!" she urged, shaking him.
Drax groaned, opening one eye groggily. "I'm sorry, Mantis," he muttered. "I don't like you. You're… too ugly." His words trailed off as he tilted his head and vomited without warning.
Mantis recoiled in surprise. "What's wrong with you?" she asked, concern evident in her voice.
Drax wiped his mouth, grimacing. "Ugh… I was imagining us… being together. It's disgusting."
Mantis's antennae twitched with frustration. "This isn't about that! I need to tell you something important. Ego has achieved his goal, and you're all in grave danger! I should have warned you sooner!"
Elsewhere on the planet, Gamora stumbled upon a dark, foreboding cave. As she ventured inside, her eyes widened in horror at the sight before her—a mountain of bones, bleached white and piled high.
"This… this is bad," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the pounding of her heart. The implications of what she was seeing hit her like a tidal wave. "We're too late."
Meanwhile, in Ego's grand chamber, the celestial being stood before Star-Lord, weaving his web of lies and manipulation.
"Peter, listen to me," Ego began, his voice calm yet compelling. "Everything around us is fleeting. That girl you're so infatuated with? She's temporary. We… we are eternal."
Star-Lord frowned but said nothing, his unease growing.
Ego continued, gesturing animatedly. "For eons, I sought life across the universe. I thought it would bring me fulfillment. But do you know what I discovered? Life is a disappointment."
The walls around them shimmered, displaying scenes of Ego's journey through the cosmos. "I realized that seeking life wasn't enough. True purpose is found in eternity. That's why I set my sights on a greater goal—becoming the universe itself."
Ego's tone grew fervent as he recounted his plan. "I planted my seeds on countless planets, waiting for them to grow and merge with me. But there was a problem—I needed more power. A single god's energy wasn't enough."
Star-Lord's stomach churned as Ego's words sank in.
"To solve this, I fathered children across the galaxy," Ego said, unbothered by the gravity of his revelation. "I hoped one of them would inherit my power. Yondu brought them to me, and I promised not to harm them. I kept that promise—they never felt a thing."
Images of Ego's offspring flashed before Star-Lord's eyes, and a chill ran down his spine. Though Ego spoke casually, the fate of his siblings was clear. None of them had survived.
Ego leaned forward, smiling. "But you, Peter… you're different. You're the only one who shares my power. You're the only one who can help me complete my dream."
Star-Lord's fists clenched as he fought to control his emotions. "And my mother?" he asked quietly. "Did you ever love her?"
For the first time, Ego's expression softened. "Of course I did," he said wistfully. "I visited her three times. But I knew if I went back a fourth time, I'd never leave. She would have distracted me from my purpose."
Star-Lord's unease deepened, a dark suspicion forming in his mind. "What… what happened to her?"
Ego sighed, as though burdened by the weight of his actions. "It pained me greatly, but I had to do it. I placed the tumor in her brain. It was necessary."
"What?!" Star-Lord's voice echoed through the chamber.
The weight of Ego's confession hit him like a thunderclap. His entire body trembled as rage consumed him. "You killed her. You killed my mother!"
Ego's serene mask slipped, replaced by a scowl. "Is this how you repay me?" he bellowed. "I offer you eternity, and you respond with betrayal?"
The ground beneath them rumbled as enormous tentacles erupted, surging toward Star-Lord. "If you won't join me willingly, then you'll serve me as a battery for the next thousand years!"
One of the tentacles shot forward, impaling Star-Lord before he could react. Divine energy coursed through him, siphoned into the ground to fuel Ego's power. The celestial being's body pulsed with newfound energy.
"Crack!"
A battle axe cleaved through the tentacles, cutting them cleanly. Beams of radiant, multicolored light cascaded from above, obliterating Ego's palace and illuminating the chaos below.
Thor descended through the Bifrost, Stormbreaker in hand. "Am I late?" he called out with a smirk.
Gamora and Drax arrived moments later, helping the injured Star-Lord to his feet. Rocket's spaceship landed in the rubble, and they hurried to load Star-Lord aboard.
"This isn't over," Mantis said, her antennae twitching with alarm. "That was only one of his avatars. He'll return."
As if on cue, tentacles burst from the ground, wrapping around the ship. A grotesque, humanoid figure emerged from the earth, snarling at them with pure hatred.
Star-Lord groaned, clutching his side. "Oh, come on! That's my biological father?!"
"How do we kill a god?" Drax asked, his voice tinged with desperation.
Rocket grinned, pulling a lever. "Easy. You find another god and stick to him like glue!"
