Chapter 171: Chapter 171: Storm of Public Opinion
As Thor expected, a few hot-headed protesters soon arrived at the gates of his manor, demanding compensation. Ignoring warnings, they charged onto the property, and Minerva, following protocol, took immediate action, eliminating the first intruder on sight.
This incident only fueled the outrage. Voices crying for "justice" and "severe punishment" filled the airwaves, amplifying calls for action against the "murderer."
At a press conference, Thor firmly defended his actions, citing the "Non-Concession Law" and "Castle Doctrine" to assert his right to self-defense on private property. With conviction, he argued that his response was entirely legal. FBI investigations corroborated his claim, forcing most people to back down.
But while the crowds receded, the media storm intensified.
Thor, however, was unfazed. The death of a few reckless individuals was trivial to the politicians. They'd offer token statements of regret and perhaps raise a glass in private—but nothing more. In fact, Thor's firm stance likely served as a warning.
Politicians weren't foolish. Their demands for "justice" were just a pretext; they didn't want to truly alienate the Avengers. Before long, a new proposal emerged.
"We cannot judge the Avengers harshly for damages incurred while fighting evil," a government spokesperson stated, "as it would surely discourage heroic efforts. However, the Avengers' methods should be regulated to prevent unnecessary risks. Therefore, we propose that all Avengers and superhumans be placed under the oversight of the World Security Council."
By appealing to the Avengers' sense of duty and leveraging public outcry, politicians were maneuvering to impose control over the team, subtly pressing them with moral obligation.
At this critical juncture, another incident escalated the tension to a breaking point.
In Nigeria, Steve Rogers finally cornered Crossbones, the last major HYDRA operative, who was trafficking a stash of biochemical weapons. With the help of Falcon and the others, HYDRA's forces were swiftly overpowered. Steve knocked Crossbones to the ground.
In a last-ditch effort, Crossbones muttered something about the Winter Soldier, then detonated a bomb strapped to himself, intending to take Steve with him.
Reacting quickly, Wanda used her powers to contain the explosive, attempting to send it skyward.
But her control was shaky. The fireball burst violently as it neared a nearby hospital.
"No…" Wanda whispered, eyes wide with horror, her hands covering her mouth in shock.
Steve quickly barked into his communicator, "Sam, we need rescue teams at the hospital—get the fire brigade up there, now!"
Fortunately, Wanda's control over her power was better than in previous incidents. The blast occurred at the top of the building, and casualties were minimized.
Even so, the damage was done. Casualties were tragic, but for some political leaders, it was a golden opportunity to discredit the Avengers. A greater loss of life might even have better served their agenda.
For the moment, media outlets worldwide seized on the incident, condemning the Avengers alliance and spreading anger and mistrust.
"Last month, dozens of civilians were injured in a confrontation between the Avengers and mercenaries in Nigeria!"
"Such events are not simply accidents but rather reflect a disturbing indifference toward human lives. A victory won by sacrificing innocents is no victory at all!"
"They operate outside international law. If we don't hold them accountable, what's stopping more incidents like this? What right does a superhuman like Scarlet Witch have to act in Nigeria?"
"Why do the Avengers ignore national sovereignty, conducting cross-border operations without regard for local laws?"
As in Thor's timeline, global pressure mounted rapidly against the Avengers.
"Thor, I just got word," Peggy Carter said, arriving with a worried expression. "The Council wants the Avengers to be under their direct oversight, similar to when S.H.I.E.L.D. was involved. This would exempt them from liability for damages but would also grant the Council full control."
She continued, "They're demanding private information on every Avenger, and they want family members under 24-hour surveillance 'for their safety.'"
Peggy sighed. She hadn't expected politicians to be so brazen, but it was clear they'd had this idea brewing long before and had merely been waiting for the right opportunity to act.
Thor let out a mirthless laugh.
"Most of my family is in Asgard. How exactly does the Council plan to protect them? Are they planning to ring Trudheim Manor with nuclear warheads? Such thoughtful 'protection,'" he mocked.
For the politicians, nuclear bombs seemed to be their ultimate trump card.
