38. Infuriating Me to Death~
“Um, what did you need from me?” Ling Ning looked at Chu Mengyao and Luo Xiaoning, a bit flustered. She had just arrived at the café that morning and hadn’t even changed her clothes when she was summoned into the “Eternal Silence” room. Could it be that they had found out about her spying last night?
“Ling Ning, you’ve changed your shoes today~” Chu Mengyao said with a sly smile, looking down at the high-heeled sandals Ling Ning was wearing. It was the first time she had seen Ling Ning wearing this kind of shoe.
“Well… I stepped into a puddle on my way home yesterday, so I had to switch shoes today.” Ling Ning shifted uncomfortably, feeling unsettled by Chu Mengyao’s gaze fixed on her feet.
“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. We called you in here to ask—was that you outside the room last night? And don’t even think about denying it. The footprints left on the floor last night were yours, weren’t they? I measured them, and only you and this dummy here wear that size.” Chu Mengyao pointed at Luo Xiaoning, who was standing beside her.
“Who are you calling a dummy!?” Luo Xiaoning bared her teeth, trying to prove she wasn’t one. But Chu Mengyao easily pushed her back down onto the couch and playfully rubbed her head.
Finally breaking free from Chu Mengyao’s grasp, Luo Xiaoning gasped for breath and said, “That’s not all! After closing up last night, I also found a ‘PY-666’ phone on the counter. You’re the only one here who uses that model. And you must have come back to retrieve it. Plus, that childish ringtone—it could only be yours.”
Right then, Ling Ning’s phone rang, the ringtone set by Ling Ye—Magical Girl Ai’s opening theme. And, of course, it was Luo Xiaoning calling her.
“So, in conclusion, the person who saw what they shouldn’t have last night is none other than you, Ling Ning!”
“Are you all detectives or something?” Ling Ning muttered to herself. She couldn’t believe she had given herself away so quickly.
“Um… I promise I won’t tell anyone. Trust me, I can keep my lips sealed,” Ling Ning pleaded.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. But you know, I trust a dead person’s silence even more~” Chu Mengyao licked her lips, her expression oddly seductive in the dim room. Her eyes glinted with malice as she stared at Ling Ning. At some point, Luo Xiaoning had moved to the door, closed it, and picked up a realistic-looking curry stick from the side.
Seeing the two getting closer, Ling Ning shut her eyes in despair. Was she really going to die not long after arriving in this world? Her new life had only just begun! Where was her protagonist’s aura? Protagonists weren’t supposed to meet their end like this! She hadn’t even told Ye Ye that the password for the savings account was her birthday. And what about her salted fish novel—had she reached the word count yet? If not, maybe she could still reminisce for a few more hundred words.
What! You’re wondering why Ling Ning didn’t resist? Facing Chu Mengyao, who could take on ten people at once, even if there were ten Ling Nings, they’d all be cannon fodder.
Time passed, yet Ling Ning still didn’t feel the pain she had anticipated. She slowly opened her eyes, only to see Chu Mengyao and Luo Xiaoning laughing so hard they had collapsed on the floor.
“I can’t take it anymore! I never thought you’d actually fall for it. Haha!”
“Did you see her expression—like she was ready to die? She even closed her eyes. It’s just too funny. I never imagined Ling Ning could be so amusing. I’m dying here, haha!” Luo Xiaoning, unlike the more restrained Chu Mengyao, had rolled onto the floor, tears streaming down her face from laughing so hard.
“You… you… You’re driving me crazy!” Ling Ning muttered. If she still didn’t realize they were messing with her, then she really would be an idiot.
“Alright, enough joking around. Yes, it’s true. My relationship with this dummy is just what you saw—yuri. We’ve been together since our first year of university.”
“It wasn’t university! It was senior year of high school. High school, okay? You came to confess to me first, remember?” Luo Xiaoning corrected her.
“Fine, fine. Senior year it is. Stop interrupting me, you idiot.” Chu Mengyao rolled her eyes at Luo Xiaoning, then turned back to Ling Ning and continued, “You know, when people fall in love, their IQ drops dramatically. Since we were always lost in our world, we eventually got found out.”
“And then?” Ling Ning’s curiosity was piqued.
“Then? We dropped out of school and hid it from our families, of course. Luckily, this dummy has decent family wealth and knows how to save money, so we opened this maid café together.”
Though Chu Mengyao spoke casually, Ling Ning detected a hint of bitterness in her expression. Clearly, things weren’t as simple as she made them out to be.
“So, your families still don’t know about your relationship?” Ling Ning asked.
Luo Xiaoning shot her a look. “If they did, do you think I’d still be here running a maid café? I would’ve been dragged home and locked away ages ago.”
“Oh~” Ling Ning nodded thoughtfully. It seemed yuri love wasn’t as idyllic as she’d imagined.
“We’re telling you all this because we’ve never really had anyone to confide in. Now that you know our secret, and since you’re also our friend, we thought we’d share it with you. Just, please, don’t tell anyone else, okay?”
“Do I look like the gossipy type?” Ling Ning smiled.
“I know you’re not. If you were, we wouldn’t have told you~”
Seeing Ling Ning’s indifferent demeanor, Chu Mengyao was curious. “Don’t you have any thoughts about us being lesbians?”
“Nope, nothing much. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll walk down that path too~” Ling Ning replied in a joking tone. Whether it was a joke or not, only she knew. “But what are you planning to do in the future? You can’t just stay here forever, right?”
Upon hearing that, Luo Xiaoning’s face immediately fell. She forced a smile, “Don’t remind me about that. It’s been troubling us for so long. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have asked you that question the other day.”
“Take it one step at a time. There’s a saying, ‘The boat will straighten when it reaches the bridge.’ We’ll figure it out. No matter what, I’m not breaking up with this dummy!” Chu Mengyao declared resolutely.
“Who are you calling a dummy, you jerk.”
“Whoever gets mad, that’s who.”
“If you keep pushing me, I’ll bite you!”
“Go ahead, bite me~”
Watching the two lovebirds bicker in front of her, Ling Ning suddenly felt like she was being force-fed dog food. Now she finally understood why their relationship had been exposed.
