31. My Heart Is Set on Studying
“Thanks for helping me pick out a phone today. How about I treat you to a meal as a thank-you?” Ling Ning took out her new phone and checked the time. The familiar sensation of the phone in her hand almost brought tears to her eyes. It had been so long since she had touched a phone, she had almost forgotten what it felt like.
“Sounds good! I know a great place nearby that’s really tasty and affordable. Let’s head there.” Zhou Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up at the mention of food. The small breakfast she had in the morning hadn’t been enough to fill her up—she was starving.
“Alright~ Lead the way.”
And so, once again, Ling Ning followed Zhou Xiaoxiao through a maze of narrow alleyways. Before long, they found themselves at the entrance of a restaurant called “Michelin Three-Star.” Don’t get the wrong idea—it was only named that way; in reality, it was just an ordinary little eatery. If it were really a Michelin-starred restaurant, Ling Ning might have to consider some desperate measures to afford it.
The restaurant was small, tucked away in a remote alley, yet the place was completely packed, with even a line of people waiting outside. For a restaurant in such an out-of-the-way spot to have this kind of traffic, it had to have something truly special.
Seeing there were no available seats, Ling Ning sighed in resignation, “It looks like there are no tables left. How about we try somewhere else?”
“Don’t worry, just leave it to me.”
Zhou Xiaoxiao confidently walked into the kitchen and greeted the owner. The owner seemed surprised to see Zhou Xiaoxiao, but soon a big smile spread across her face as she chatted happily with her, even handing off her current tasks to someone else just to catch up.
Ling Ning watched the scene in silence, thinking, “Is there anyone around here that Zhou Xiaoxiao doesn’t know?” Before long, they were seated in a small private room, usually not open to customers. Though it wasn’t very big, the environment was far better than outside. Once again, Ling Ning couldn’t help but sigh, “It’s great to have connections.”
“Ah, that was the lady who used to run a shop next to my old house. She moved here after the area went through renovations. I have to tell you, her braised pork ribs are absolutely amazing, and that eggplant casserole—just thinking about it makes my mouth water,” Zhou Xiaoxiao said excitedly.
Hearing Zhou Xiaoxiao rave about it, Ling Ning couldn’t help but look forward to the meal as well.
Since they were acquaintances, the food came out incredibly fast. Before they knew it, the table was full of dishes. The enticing aroma filled the room, and even before tasting it, as a seasoned home cook, Ling Ning could tell that this was going to be delicious.
“Mmm~”
Although she had already anticipated it, Ling Ning hadn’t expected it to be *this* good. The flavors were perfectly balanced—so satisfying, it defied words. (Don’t ask me to describe it either; I have no idea how, ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍).
“Well, what do you think? I wasn’t lying, was I?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked with a smile, watching the astonishment on Ling Ning’s face.
“Mhm.” Ling Ning nodded. “These flavors are just irresistible. If my cooking skills were this good, I’d definitely open a restaurant.”
“Come on~ Your cooking is already pretty great.”
Ling Ning smiled modestly. She knew her abilities well—she still had a long way to go to reach this level.

“I’m so full… I can’t move.”
Ling Ning slumped in her chair, holding her stomach. This was the first time since arriving in this world that she’d eaten this much. The dishes were just too delicious to resist.
“Ling Ning, do you know what’s the hardest thing for a foodie?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked, still rubbing her own full stomach.
“What’s that?”
“It’s weight. Now I have to go on a diet again when I get home. I told myself I’d just have a little bit, but I couldn’t help myself,” Zhou Xiaoxiao lamented.
“What can’t you help?”
At that moment, the owner walked in with a smile.
“Of course, it’s because your cooking is just too good, Auntie. I simply can’t control myself,” Zhou Xiaoxiao responded playfully.
“Oh, you’re such a sweet talker. And you must be Xiaoxiao’s friend, right? Sorry for not greeting you sooner—it was quite busy earlier. How was the food? Did you enjoy it?” The owner smiled until her eyes were practically closed.
Ling Ning nodded and said, “Can I ask you how you make those braised pork ribs? Why can’t I replicate that flavor? And what about the eggplant casserole?” She couldn’t help but feel curious.
“Well, you see, it’s all about balabalabala~” The owner launched into a detailed explanation, while Zhou Xiaoxiao looked lost, clearly unable to follow. But Ling Ning was listening intently, almost as if she was taking mental notes.
Actually, I’d love to detail what the owner said, but honestly, it’s just too complicated—and it might even feel like I’m padding the word count, wouldn’t it? So instead, I’ll save us all some trouble. Isn’t that right? Don’t praise me for my honesty—I think it’s my greatest quality too.
Finally, just as Zhou Xiaoxiao was about to fall asleep from boredom, the two of them finished their conversation. Judging by the looks on their faces, if the owner hadn’t had other matters to attend to, they could have gone on much longer.
When it was time to pay, the owner even gave them a 20% discount.

In the afternoon, Zhou Xiaoxiao had something come up, so she left first. Ling Ning thought about it for a moment and realized that apart from going home, she didn’t really have anywhere else to go. She also called Qin Qing, who told her that there wasn’t any work at the moment. After some thought, she decided that going home to sleep was her only real option.
However, Ling Ning didn’t want to waste her precious day off sleeping. “Why sleep now when I’ll be resting forever after death?” she thought. As a modern young person, Ling Ning decided to go to an internet café and study. Only through learning could she change her destiny; only by studying could she seize the future. At this moment, Ling Ning had but one thought—studying was the only path forward.
What? There’s a computer at home, so why not just study there? Hmph! It’s because Ling Ning didn’t want to fight with Ling Ye over the computer. Besides, you can flaunt your skills at an internet café—can you do that at home?
She arrived at a nearby internet café that was far more legitimate than the one near her house. After taking a quick walk around, she didn’t see any elementary school kids.
As she wandered around, she noticed that most of the patrons were actually studying, and there was even a crowd gathered around watching others learn. Curious, Ling Ning approached one of the onlookers and asked what was going on. It turned out that the café was holding a small competition, with the winning team getting three months of free internet access. Apparently, this competition happened every three months, and if you managed to stay champion, you could even keep getting free internet access indefinitely.
“Oh~”
