How Could I Possibly Have a Daughter After Reincarnating?

30. How About a New Phone?

After following Zhou Xiaoxiao into the alleyway, Ling Ning found herself at the back door of the exclusive phone store. She watched as Zhou Xiaoxiao pulled out her phone and spoke to someone, but she couldn’t hear exactly what was being said.

Not long after, the door opened, and out stepped a portly man in a suit. He beamed at Zhou Xiaoxiao and pulled her into a big bear hug. “Long time no see! Xiaoxiao, you’ve become even prettier.”

“Oh, stop it~” Zhou Xiaoxiao replied, though her smile gave her away completely.

“Alright, here’s the ‘Banana 7’ phone you wanted. I’ve got some things to take care of, so I’ll be on my way. Give my regards to your parents.” With that, the portly man hurried off, clearly busy with his own matters.

“This is Uncle Wang, my neighbor from when I was little. He’s always been good to me. He’s a manager at the ‘Banana’ company here, so, you know~” Zhou Xiaoxiao explained.

Ling Ning nodded, understanding perfectly. She sighed internally—having connections truly was a blessing.

“Alright, I’ve got my new phone, and now it’s your turn.” Zhou Xiaoxiao smiled. Clearly, getting her hands on a new phone had put her in a good mood.

Ling Ning once again followed Zhou Xiaoxiao through the maze of alleyways. She had to admire how Zhou Xiaoxiao navigated through these confusing paths so effortlessly. If it had been her, she’d have gotten lost more times than she could count.

“How do you know this place so well?” Ling Ning asked curiously.

“Well~ I used to live around here for a while, so I’m pretty familiar with it.” Zhou Xiaoxiao’s eyes held a hint of nostalgia as she spoke.

After walking for quite a while, the two of them finally emerged from the alley and returned to the main street. Right across from them was another exclusive phone store, and they went in together.

The store was bustling, with people gathered at every counter, seeking advice on different phones.

“So, what kind of phone are you looking for?” Zhou Xiaoxiao asked.

“My budget is around two thousand yuan. Can you help me see what I can get for a thousand?” Ling Ning replied.

“A thousand yuan, huh~” Zhou Xiaoxiao thought for a moment before leading Ling Ning over to a counter. She pointed at a phone and said, “This is the ‘Seven Star NOTE7.’ It’s actually not bad. Given its specs, it shouldn’t be selling for just a thousand yuan, but because of its tendency to explode, it’s marked down to this price. There’ve only been a few hundred cases of it happening, with just a few dozen people getting serious injuries, like having their skulls blown off. If you trust your luck, this is your phone. It can even double as a grenade if you need one.”

“B-blown off… skulls?” Ling Ning stammered. “I think I’ll pass. But seriously, if it’s this dangerous, why is it even still on sale? Isn’t anyone regulating it?”

Zhou Xiaoxiao shrugged helplessly. “Honestly… I have no idea. But if that one’s not for you, how about this one?” She pointed to a phone beside the ‘Seven Star NOTE7.’

“This is the ‘Akino 1110,’ the flagship model of the Akino company for years. It has perfect lines, a sleek body, and excellent specs. It can handle ‘Battlefield 1’ and ‘Titanfall 2’ at the same time. It even has a bulletproof system with 360° defense, and the ability to track and deflect bullets. You can even activate the micro nuclear reactor inside it to turn it into a mini nuclear bomb. And the best part? It’s only 998 yuan. Hard to believe, right?”

“Uh… can I ask what kind of company ‘Akino’ is?” Ling Ning asked, bewildered.

“You don’t know? ‘Akino’ is the world’s largest weapons manufacturer. Apparently, they’re even working on space-based weapons now, using their phones as launch devices to achieve yields greater than a nuclear bomb. Of course, that’s just a rumor.”

“……” Ling Ning was at a loss for words.

Seeing Ling Ning’s expression, Zhou Xiaoxiao realized the ‘Akino 1110’ wasn’t going to cut it either. But that was alright; there were still other options.

“Here, how about this one?” Zhou Xiaoxiao handed Ling Ning another phone.

Ling Ning examined it. It looked like a regular phone—decent build, good in hand, but she couldn’t turn it on, so she wasn’t sure about the operating system.

“This phone is called the ‘Watchdog Prototype I.’ I know the name sounds a bit off, but it’s actually a really good phone. It can hack into most electronic devices. For instance, when you’re waiting at a red light and it feels endless, with this phone, you can change it to green whenever you want. You can also steal personal information from others, and even transfer money out of other people’s bank accounts. In times of need, you can trigger a city-wide blackout. It’s the perfect phone for arsonists and assassins alike, and it’s just 998 yuan. Amazing, right?”

“Also, rumor has it that its creator, Aiden Pearce, is releasing a new model at the end of the year, with even more features. Interested?” Zhou Xiaoxiao looked at Ling Ning with wide, expectant eyes.

“Sigh~” Ling Ning suddenly felt like coming out shopping for a phone with Zhou Xiaoxiao might have been a huge mistake.

“What, still no good?” Zhou Xiaoxiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully. Maybe Ling Ning thought the phones she’d shown were a little too… extraordinary?

Suddenly, an idea came to Zhou Xiaoxiao, and she dragged Ling Ning to a corner display case. She pointed to one of the phones inside and said, “This is the ‘Future Diary’ mass-produced model made by the ‘God’ company. It can predict the future, although the mass-produced versions tend to malfunction from time to time. But overall, it’s pretty good. They say only twelve prototypes exist. How about it? Magical enough for you?”

“Uh… could I maybe get a more… normal phone? Nothing sci-fi or magical. I just need something that can make calls, send texts, and occasionally play some games,” Ling Ning replied, exhausted.

“Oh come on, you should’ve said that earlier!”

Finally, Zhou Xiaoxiao led Ling Ning to a counter called ‘Gaoji.’ Ling Ning stared in disbelief at the advertising slogan above: “Why chase boys or girls when you can chase phones? Have you chased a phone today?”

“Alright, I know the name is a bit… much, but their phones are actually pretty good and affordable. For instance, this ‘PY-666’ model meets all your requirements. It has a decent OS and can run most of the popular games smoothly. Plus, it’s reasonably priced.”

After consulting with the sales associate, Ling Ning confirmed there was nothing “extraordinary” about it. The name might be strange, but the phone seemed like a good fit for her.

Having seen enough, Ling Ning decisively bought two phones—one black, one white—putting an end to her somewhat sci-fi, somewhat magical journey through phone shopping.
